Movies and games on one Blu-ray disc? It's happening this year, promises Sony photo

Now this is an interesting concept, and one so obvious that it really is shocking nobody's tried it already. SCEA hardware marketing manager John Koller has announced plans to produce Blu-ray movie/videogame hybrids sometime this year. That's right, all the thrill of Talladega Nights and Lair on ONE DISC!

"The way that we see the future is that the movie and the game are placed on the same disc," explains Koller. "We will definitely see this stuff this year."

According to the Sony man, lots of developers have already expressed interest in the concept of hybridized BDs, and Warner Bros. Interactive has confirmed that it sees potential, claiming that it could theoretically have included a demo version of Wanted: Weapons of Fate with the film itself.

The potential is definitely there, although just like Home, I feel that this is something advertisers will bust a nut over more than consumers. Still, it's neat concept.

Not for me, sir. I like to have everything in its own box. I don't even buy those DVD two or three-pack thingies unless they are all in the same series of movies, because I don't know where to alphabetize them in otherwise. I just don't see the point of this.

The only thing we will see out of this are demos of video games based on whatever movie the blu-ray is featuring.

It would be cool for the movie/game mash up but other than that I see it getting very expensive...

Did you buy Re5, Re5 with Rambo or Re5 with The Nightmare before Christmas?

None dude, I got it with The Notebook...WHOOAAAAA

It souds good on paper but you have to wonder, with the disparity with the price of movies and games what sort of price structures will they have? and will you still have a choice of stand alone copies of either?. The obvious choice would be to bundle movie and licensed games but, would you buy the hipotetical new Max Payne with the awful movie for an extra increase in price?

Agreed with kin84. As long as the price structure is well maintained, this could be pretty good. The only downfall is that movie-based video games aren't the greatest.

This sounds lame on too many levels for me. So instead of paying $60 for a game, now I'll pay $100 for a game and a crappy movie? And what if the game/movie combo blows? I mean, sure, MGS 4 is awesome, but MGS 4 and Delta Farce would most certainly blow.

On a side note, this video game/movie combo would work great, IMO, if the movies were porn, and ONLY if they are porn.

Because any movie/videogame hybrids would have less packaging they should be cheaper than buying them both seperately so I'd definitely be interested to get something like Pitch Black and Assault on Dark Athena on the one disc.

I'm not interested in buying a full game and movie on a single disc. I might want a demo or something on my blu-rays, but by the time the movie gets onto shelves and I get a copy, I'd expect the demo to be on the PSN unless the situation is like Wanted where the movie is out well before the game. I'd also like having promo videos on the discs; things like the Dead Space animated comics that are released beforehand.

Maybe publishers should come up with an online ordering system where you could choose to have multiple games on a disc (for a cheaper price) and/or games plus movies. You could then have your custom game disc shipped right to you.

This is a pretty terrible idea. I wonder what the price difference on this is going to be.

Ok I agree, this is a shitty idea.

However.. if they release the Street Figher Blu Ray with SF IV... how AWESOME would that be???

this isn't new to dvd's, only new to bluray. if they would combine a full game with a movie then it would be something. but all they will do is add a demo to a movie.

Well, they did this with the PS3 Collector's Edition of Stranglehold, so I suppose it could work. But will the movie portions of the discs play on regular Blu-ray players, or will we have to watch them in the PS3?

A double-feature to fear: Lair and The Rollerblade Seven. The discs will never fly off the shelves.

Street Fighter 2 anniverary on PS2 already did this with the SF2 anime on it. Sorry Sony, you're late to the show! Oh wait...

Also, this is great in theory because it would allow companies to save money on production costs. However, history has shown that savings from digital downloads, multiple products on one disc, or even revenues from in-game advertising are NEVER passed on to consumers.

yea I don't see this as a huge selling feature... just a useful trick to put demos in movies or bonus content (developer commentary, etc) in a format that can play in both standalone units and ps3.
