Most shocking Internet news: PS3 is the fastest selling console ever in UK photo

HA!

OK, now that we have that out of the way, take a look at the best Sony PlayStation 3 news to come out since ... well, maybe ever. According to Chart-Track via GamesIndustry, the PS3 is the fastest selling home console in the United Kingdom ... EVER! Yeah, EVER. Doubters, naysayers, what have you say now brown cow? Here are the deets:

Chart-Track has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that UK consumers snapped up 165,000 PlayStation 3 units in the two days following the console's launch.

That makes PS3 the fastest-selling home console in history, beating the Wii - which shifted 105,000 units during its launch weekend - and Xbox 360, with 70,000 sold.

Both Nintendo and Microsoft struggled to meet demand with their consoles, leading to stock shortages - but Sony previously stated that the UK would get around 220,000 of the 1 million PS3 units allocated to Europe for launch.

Wow, with today's news about the Virtual Console and now this uber-positive PS3 news, it's like Make Robert Summa Happy Day or something.

The fact that their is more supply than demand for a newly launched console is bad.

The fact they actually sold tons of consoles proves they havent completely failed like many want sony out of the game. I would be rather dissapointed if its just nintendo and M$.

This is both good and bad. It's good that every single person willing to buy a PS3 was able to on launch day. But it's also terrible at how badly Sony overestimated how many consoles were needed.

Think of it this way. Sony already loses money on consoles being sold. Think of all the money they spent on the consoles sitting on shelves. All time, money, personnel, etc wasted producing an unused product.

Who the hell even CARES anymore? All of this bickering marketing number bullshit really sucks the fun out of gaming-related news.

I don't care about how many units the fucking console sells.

I care about things related to the games that you play on said consoles, because that's the whole POINT.

I wish everyone would shut the hell up about sales figures. Just proof that gaming is just as commercialized as every other form of media in the world. A damn shame that it can't just be art.

@JonDarkwood, if you don't care then don't read these articles and don't post of them. You going out of your way to post here just further perpetuates it. STFUAJPG

I personally find talking about sales and competition and whether the bluray or hddvd will win or which console is coming out on top or if Sony is going to drop out is extremely fun to talk about. Yes, playing games are a lot of fun. But when i am not playing games i like talking about gaming related things, and this extends into business. If you don't like it then just ignore it.

*le sigh*

Spin is great, perspective is better. From kikizo.com

Nintendo sold more than 105,000 Wiis over the weekend, according to an MCV report, more than doubling the 50,000 that were sold in the first 12 hours. The previous best-selling console was the Xbox 360, which sold 70,000 units in its first weekend last December. (Sony sold more).

The numbers would probably been higher still if Nintendo had been able to get more consoles onto shelves, but retailers around the country are reporting that they have sold out. (But does it matter?)

With Sony having 55,000 units unsold at launch, who would you rather be?

Fuck me. Sony gives away free 46 inch plasma TV's and they still can't sell out!!??
"

100 free TVs to the first 100 people at one store. not everybody in the UK is going to go there. the second they announced that it probably filled up. are you dumb enough to think that that would cause a sell out? and the fact is that they sold more than double the 360s and 60,000 more than the wii in launch day. that's good for sony. it doesn't matter if they didn't sell out. they'll probably keep selling this way for the next couple of weeks to and soon overtake the wii and 360 (by the end of this year methinks). the playstation brand name is huge in europe.

You know if people were more civilized to each other in a faceless crowd of commenters instead of doing this "mine is bigger than yours" BS, you'd have a better time around the forums. Instead, for many of you, if you're "winning," you brag and be a total jerk towards the "losers" and when it's the other way around you'll be acting like a voice of reason and maturity and go "hey, why is everyone picking on me, so childish."

If it's good news, it's good news. If it's bad news, well, "maybe if you tell the bad news in a good way, it won't sound so bad." Otherwise, well, you've seen the trailer of the movie "300" and what happened to the messenger?

lol its funny how even though they dont sell out, they completely sell faster then the other consoles did, and you fanboys just refuse to believe sony is any good so you say excuses like "oh well the other two have sold a lot more". fuck me what the hell does that show? the 360 has been around a lot longer and even poor people can afford a wii so why the hell wouldnt they get one? that however does not make them better then anything.

This is good news for Sony but why, exactly, is Summa viewing this news as some sort of personal victory? Is he getting a piece of the action? Is he on Sony's payroll? Moreover, why is Summa so happy that there weren't more Virtual Console games released this week? He went so far as to suggest that the lack of Virtual Console releases was contributing to "Make Robert Summa Happy Day." Again, Summa is viewing the lack of high profile Virtual Console games as some sort of personal victory. Either Summa is working for Sony or he has serious psychological problems.

"Come on, sell out or not it was a successful launch. "

Um, No. If your launch doesn't sell out, it means one thing: Everyone who wanted one bought one, and that number was smaller than what you had in stock. That being the case, their numbers will most likely fall off like a rock. That's not good. Also, these results are not indicative of what happened in most of mainland Europe where many crickets were heard chirping. Besides, all these consoles in Europe are just the ones that no one wanted in the rest of the world. That's why they had so many. It's like pick your poison, which country would you like to have the most stock gathering dust in?

No one tell Summa that the PS3 didn't actually sell out in the UK. He might cry.

I see other people already have in the previous comments. Drat.

I mean the Wii had people slobbering over it for months after the initial launch. It was almost always sold out as more and more units get released for some time...but Sony being unable to manage to sell off their entire initial shipment? Yeah...we best not tell him.

But of course he posts things like this to bait people to the site and have them keep coming. The whole rar rar anti-nintendo thing is all an (annoying) act. It works on me anyway.

"Chart-Track estimates 165,000 units sold in two days"

Note the estimates bit. I also point you to another key part of this article:-

"selling an estimated 165,000 units in its first two days of release, bettered only by its older handheld sibling the PSP which sold around 185,000."

Thats right. The PSP also sold extremely well on it's debut... and look what happened since.

So what is really happening here? A few things:

1. Sony has delivered a decent amount of consoles to actually meet demand and preorders. Both the Xbox360 and Wii failed to do this, infact the Wii is still not appearing on shelves in shops because they are being sold same day stock arrives. This is a positive to Sony; those that want a PS3 can get one.

2. There has been a considerable wait (over 3 months) between the release in USA and Japan and over here in the UK. That is a lot of time for more people to register a Preorder.

3. The Sony brand name over in the UK is still quite strong and this alone has probably secured it a good debut. Continuing these promising sales is the big challenge.

In reply to Summa's Nintendo bashing however he neglected to say that even now in Edinburgh, some shops are STILL fulfilling preorders for Nintendo Wiis. Yes, 3 months later, still trying to meet demand. If they had have had enough consoles for all who wanted one in December then the sales figures would have blitzed 165k. Is that Nintendo's fault? I guess so, but they are still shifting a huge number every week, they just cant seem to make and shift enough to meet demand.

However, credit to Sony for the First week sales. The excitement of launch was pitiful, but that is probably because most Europeans have had to wait so long (and were guarenteed preorders) that they turned up the next day to pick up their PS3 instead of queuing through the night.

I am going to be watching the sales figures for the next few weeks with interest though. When all those Preorders have gone and are out the door, just how much momentum will it have. Time will tell.

Don't mean to rain on your parade, Summa(I was one of those that purchased over the weekend) but that record is pretty much meaningless when you realise that nearly every console and handheld has held that title since the Gamecube (yep even ol' purple) so to think of this as anything more token success is a bit hopeful. Think of it as an initiation.

It just means that the launch wasn't a miscarrage. It's like a prerequisite for entering the market proper.

To me, if it didn't set the record that would have been it dead and buried right there.

Hmmm.. Actually according to numbers the PS3 initially sold more in the US than the Wii. Simply because there were more. (believe it or not)

Two facts can be brought about this:

1.-Numbers can be fascinating and they can also be contrary to popular knowledge.

2.-Despite fantastic Wii sales and acceptance (as short termed as it may be), the PS3 is not doing that bad.. is just not doing very good. But is not rolling on its grave either. 2 million sales in 2-3 months is definetily not a "failure".

Anyway, the PS2 and the DS are still ruling the charts no next gen console is even close to those numbers. So who cares?

The Sony and Playstation brands are big time in the EU. (Some Euro heads I know only support Playstation product.) No surprise there.

Marketing companies can only gauge so much. Their numbers cannot determine the actual demand for each console (usually throwing a distracting spin).

My assessment in Europe is that the kids are all over the Wii, starting to embrace the 360 and giving a big warm welcome hug and french kiss to the new kid on the block, PS-tree. What's the deal with the PSP and DS out there right now?

There will be global figures to play around with pretty soon. Let the games begin...
