Yes, I've seen Mortal Kombat: Armageddon for the Wii. No, I did not play it. In fact, slated to come out this April, there wasn't a playable unit available for Midway's winter event this week. Strange, huh? Anyway, check out how you'll be pulling off moves in Mortal Kombat's first Wii appearance.

It'll be interesting to see how well they pull this off. I'll give it a rental when it's released.

@Velcroman: Thanks! That was really informative! I like how not only do they make use of the Wiimote and Nunchuk, but you can also use the GC controller or the Classic Controller. That's badass!

Actually, that video makes it look pretty cool. I think I might just have to pick this one up when it comes out. They lost me after MK Trilogy (IMO, the last good one), so maybe this one will bring me back to the franchise.

I'm starting to wonder if the Wii will ever move past party games.

I love it... but it's becoming the reality

How long do wii have to suffer through these lame ports. Is hope Nintendo isn't the only one making games designed around the Wii.

Wouldnt this be easier than memorizing a bunch of button mashing combos?

Armageddon sucks to begin with it was a definite downgrade from the previous two and now that you get to play it on the wii, get frustrated and flail your arms around the room, impaling anything in your way with the nunchuck while screaming like a seal in a woodchipper... The point is: this game is going to suck even worse on the wii.

i dont' know about you guys, but the youtube video really shows that this can work. although its a port, looks like ed boon really thought about how to make the controls right for the wii.

From the vid I saw the other day the controls didn't look all that varied or integrated well into the game. MK always sucked balls for me anyway do no loss there.

But!

This isn't far off what the Wii is all about. If someone actually took the time to build a fighter around gestures that made sense it'd bring the whole genre to a level. Instead of quarter circle punch for a fireball you could A+pull back to charge, then vary the speed and power of the fireball with the forward thrust.

Doing chains of moves would become a logical progression of movement rather than a mad mash of buttons. I agree that these up, down implementations aren't what we should be getting with the Wii, but much like we allow a first generation of software to be a little sucky in graphics until the devs get to grip with the hardware, perhaps too we need to allow them some time to realise what they can do with the Wiimote when they've got more time on their hands.

Sorry but for effect I have to say it again. IT WOULD BE FUCKING AWESOME to do the fireball move out of street fighter with the nunchuck+Wiimote and have your character do the same on screen. Hell yeah!

Wow.

It's good to see that Midway is intent on making Mortal Kombat even LESS respected by the fighting game community.

Could someone tell me, legitimately, how could this game POSSIBLY not be a button mashing contest with these types of controls?

Hardcore fighter fans throw a hissy fit when there's a 8ms lag from projector/LCD screens, how will this stupid movement lag work out?

I agree that the Wii is looking to be nothing more than a "fun at parties" system. I honestly feel that the Wii's "revolutionary control scheme" is a step BACKWARDS in controller evolution. I mean, all the great progress in precision, and accuracy in controllers has been thrown out the window for the Wii-mote. I mean, track balls were more precise for crap's sake.

I think the problem might be...what CAN you really do with the Wii besides goofy minigames and tech demos? Games like Zelda and Red Steel can be done on the gamecube. What do we really want to see and will they deliver?

I would crap if Nintendo announced that Bethesda was making an original Morrowind game where you controlled a shield or weapon with both the nunchuk and the mote. I would love to see a MLB game where the batting and pitching were taken to another level....fuck the Mario sports. We all want to be a Jedi. How cool would it be if you could force push with the mote and press the button to light up your saber?

I know its early but I see nothing in the pipeline besides Nintendo first party. These games will be good but I want something different already. I just have this horrible feeling that we aren't going to get it.

Where do you get precision with an analogue stick and buttons interfacing with a 3D world? There is nothing intuative about that control method other than its simplistic design (stick + buttons).

However you spend a considerable period of your life grabbing, twisting, turning, pulling, pushing, throwing, pointing.... with your hands.

Seems everytime I see a negative remark about the Wiimote type functionality its paired with a comment about how much better the existing controller setup is. Remember the whines about how you've never be able to play Madden on the Revolution. Funny how it actually played better on the Wii in the end.

While I hope we don't see the end of a pure digital input controller with stick and buttons I do hope we continue to see an evolution in the intuative 3D motion controllers.

Broham,

WiiMote
up, down, left, right, forward, backwards.
plus acceleration
plus buttons
plus pointing with sensor bar

Nunchuck
up, down, left, right, forward, backwards.
plus acceleration
plus buttons

How about not dragging out the worn out DS criticisms and having some patience for developers to get used to taking advantage of the NEW controller. This isn't a graphical upgrade that they can throw new artists at, they actually need to give their designers some choices for a change. Do something new and original.

Sure some games will be like MK with sucky controls, opinion probably falling 50/50 on whether its a good or bad thing. However there is no reason why many genres aren't going to get blown wide open by a whole new level of interaction.

In the games I have so far for the Wii I've yet to experience a hardware shortcoming that would make me think your prediction is true. Software I'm grown up enough to accept tends to disappoint more than impress but when it comes you know it!

I looked at the images, and I looked like the worst control scheme known to man. I looked at the video, and it looked pretty cool. I guess this is one you have to try for yourself to decide on.

Jaded, what's the point of buying a next-gen gimmick when you could just keep the same system you have and play many of the games fine?

Also, yet again, it's nice to know I'm not missing out on anything.

@Magesx

Same reason the DS was a gimmick and the PSP wasn't. It brings something new to the gaming table, something above a graphical overhaul. Sometimes it'll suck sure, but sometimes it'll also be all different flavours of excellent.

Then again, if you want to live your life assured by convention good luck. Call anything new a gimmick then jump on the bandwagon when its mainstream or you have no choice.

Sometimes I wonder why innovation is such a hard concept for people to buy into, its like imagination and fun are just childish attributes which under no circumstance should be used when erm playing games?!?!

Heaven forbid I look silly waving my arms around, I prefer the much more cool "screw up your face, hunch over the controller, button masher" expression when I want to impress family and friends.

Jeez!

Unfortunately, mainstream concerning the Wii is that it's the Savior here to take us to Kingdom Come, not that it's a gimmick. I am one of the few who believes this. I'm not jumping on a bandwagon, I'm basing my opinions on what I've read, seen, and played.

And it's not innovative. This technology has existed for years, and it annoys me to hear people say that Nintendo single-handedly invented motion sensing or something similar.

And unfortunately again, I don't like the idea of waving my arms around (in most cases). I'm not embarrassed, or anything, but I just really don't want to do it when I know I could not be doing it.

Also, I'm amazed that you try to actually impress people with your mad arm waving skills(z).

I see the mainstream seeing a NEW, DIFFERENT, FUN, ACCESSABLE input device. I've yet to see the mainstream consider this as a savior for gaming. The closest would probably be Nintendo's own description of needing change and innovation or risk stagnation. Hardly an Armageddon scenario though. Seems your perception of what the Wii is trying to achieve is tainting your opinion more than your own first hand experience.

Nintendo admitted themselves that the technology was old. They said the innovation was putting it to use in a games system, which to their credit they are not afraid of doing. Please let me know if I've misrepresented the fact there at all.

Likewise on a PC why use a mouse, the cursor keys allow functional movement of a cursor. Perhaps because a mouse allows a greater degree of control and a more intuitive interface to interact with. You're familiarity with a controller doesn't necessary mean it is the best solution of playing games, neither does the Wiimote for that matter but with the Wii its optional either way, an evolution, with say a 360, its controller or sweet FA. I prefer choices and new stuff but hey what do I know.

This is why I say whether through mainstream pressure (your favorite franchises hitting Wii with motion controls) or MS, Sony and Nintendo all integrating motion controls in future systems. You'll be forced on board this bandwagon sooner or later. Right now you sound like the person buying Zelda for the Gamecube to prove they were right and don't need motion controls to enjoy the game. They didn't add much, but they did ADD to the game, thats a plus in my book.

BTW - I said I really didn't care how silly I looked as long as I was having fun with the game (isn't that the whole point?). However it seems, some concerns over the arm movements are driven from a level of outside perception of you when playing a game (Obviously a version of America's Top Model). I was merely pointing out its hardly impressive sitting hunched over on the couch stabbing at buttons so what exactly is the problem?

Right now I think developers are pushing the use of the Wii mote too much in places it doesn't belong. They want EVERYTHING to be done with the remote, and that's simply not going to work.

I'm thinking of the PoP Wii, where the camera is mapped to a tilt of the remote, or where you must shake the controller to slide down the curtains.

I think a good button mapping system, with minor usage of motion sensing will really be the marks of a good hardcore Wii game.

For instance...
An RE4 sequel could easily be made and a few uses of the Wiimote would really improve it. For instance, using the remote to allow you to aim your gun while you move and thrusting the nunchuk to stab with the knife.

You don't need much else. Perhaps shaking the nunchuk to reload, maybe putting in some motion sensing to shake off zombies.

Actually I realy like it, MK has always been a series unable to reach the mainstream due to the complicated (for a noob) moves and extra complicated "lities" you cant just button unlike some other popular games cough SoulCalibur, Tekken cough, cough!

It should be refreshing to play MK without getting sore thumbs, now thats a nice change.

Besides if you havent played MKA, the Kustom Karacter editor is worth the entry price alone, theres little more satisfying experiences than doing a Jack Thompson KAK and then ripping his head clean off (of course pummeling him in FN3 is fun but the fight always stops before he is laying dead on the ground, in MKA thats not a problem) >;)
