Mortal Kombat team using Unreal 3 engine for next game photo

In a recent interview with Game Informer, Ed Boon drops some interesting details on their next title. Absolutely blown away by the look of Gears of War, the team has decided to adopt the Unreal 3 engine to power their next title, presumably the 8th iteration of Mortal Kombat. Going into more detail, Boon describes an online arcade concept he'd been kicking around for a while:

We have some really crazy ideas that are really kind of extreme, and I’d be hesitant to mention them because people would assume that they’re in the next game. But we’re definitely looking into different interfaces to the player for a lobby. For a way to get players hooked up and playing online, an ongoing thing like a ranking system or whatnot. I’ve always wanted to have sort of a virtual arcade. It’s weird, because I can picture it in my head and I can see walking through the arcade and putting your quarter up, but I wonder how many people have experienced that part. It’s been so long—the early ‘90s—before some people were born, and they say, “What the hell is an arcade?” We’re trying a bunch of stuff right now.

Boon also openly talks about more details, referencing a grittier, more serious direction, inspired by the dirtier look of Gears of War. Everything you've known from the previous games will be thrown out the window -- the three-fighting-style system, the tone, and controls. Apparently, it's "
going to be nothing like you’ve ever seen before." But doesn't everyone say that? I guess we'll get the answer to that as we inch closer to the predicted November 2008 release date.

I'd love to see them do a melee centric thing like Rune, etc

Sweet. I love Unreal 3 graphics, add that to a solid MK game and you'd have me excited.

Why would I want anyone to toss out "everything [I've] known" from the Mortal Kombat series? I can see wanting to take the graphics in a different direction; but messing with my fighting styles (which weren't even an option before Deadly Alliance)? Sacrilege. If it ain't broke...

Maybe they should concentrate on making a decent handheld version of the MK games. I'm still crying like a baby over Mortal Kombat Advance.

with all these games using the unreal engine, i kinda want different graphics. I know it people are saying "z0mg GOW best 360 graphics eva!" but I want to see some creativity in game like crackdown.

@iRaf

An engine is an engine, visuals don't follow any particular engine. Art direction leads the visuals.

I can license UE3 and make a game that looks like Katamari if I wanted to. The engine is just the framework for which the game runs on.

Though, the GOW look is what's popular in today's games.

Each 3D MK game has gotten better, even if they don't hold up against their 2D counterparts. Still, I do love me some fatality pwnage.

This is a good sign, Ive gotten really tired of the same old setup of the MK games

I remember going to the arcades way back when and putting my quarters up, I loved it. Now gotta stomach playing with kids half my age that think their the shit because mommmy bought them a 360. Brats

And its cool their wanting to use the Unreal engine, if they actually milk it well, it could be a very good looking game. Hopefully being inspired by Gears will make them go for a more realistic look and not so much kidding, same run of the mill looks.

Bring on real Fatalitys baby
