Whoops! Looks like a loose-mouthed developer at Warner Bros. has let a certain cat out of a certain bag, with Mortal Kombat Executive Producer Shaun Himmerick stating that his team has the next generation PlayStation Portable.
"We have a PSP2 in the house and we’re looking at the engine, like what can it support," says Himmerick. "Always a big thing for us is the performance. We’re running at 60 fps, what can we do and do we have to build all the art assets over. We’re definitely looking at them. PSP2 looks like it’s a pretty powerful machine. We don’t have a 3DS system in house yet, but we’re looking to get one, and we’ll certainly look at what its power is."
Like all good Sony projects, this is looking like one of the worst kept secrets in town. Just like the PSPgo, inFAMOUS 2, Resistance 3 and Killzone 3. Sony is this industry's perpetual leaky faucet.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Though they probably expected this. I hope they realise that going up against the 3DS is not going to be an easy feat at all.
Now, if they could whack PS2 emulation into it, I'd be happy. But of course, that'd mean having to nab dodgy ISOs and stuff. Not so cool.
Likely not but still the 3ds looks pretty tough from what I've seen so far!
That's the reason they showed nothing but PSP commercials @ E3, they had to throw something together last minute so as to not completely ignore their handheld platform.
I'm most definitely going to be owning a 3DS and Sony's going to have to do a lot of things better if they want me to buy a PSP2. I love my PSP, I've enjoyed owning one since shortly after launch, but I've had to put up with a lot of bungling on Sony's part and I'll be letting them know how I feel with my wallet if they bring a weak sauce PSP2 to the table.
no.
If anything, PSP3D sounds better, has more of a ring to it. Then again, that could get a little confusing for consumers who don't understand the difference between it and the 3DS.
I'll be picking up a PSP2 day one. Much better than playing on something that feels like it's made of cheap plastic with tiny ass buttons made for a 5 year old, like the DS.
Better games on the PSP as well.
lol 3D on a tiny ass screen
lol tiny buttons
lol cheap construction
lol stylus controls
Dragon Quest IX.
Beat that.
...yeah.
Okay seriously though, from the stuff I've heard about it so far, like the touch screen on the back I can't imagine it would work in actual game and then the standard graphics boost this will probably get. It's not really exciting me so far. What else could they do, 6 Axis? If I have the money at the right time, I'm probably gonna go for the 3DS, I have a feeling the PSP2 is going to be excessively expensive and probably not gonna have a decent line up at launch.
And seriously "lol stylus controls"?
You're an idiot. I'm not saying they need to cram a touchscreen onto the PSP2, but it needs something. The DS is ridiculously more successful than the PSP. Period. This is indisputable. It doesn't matter which you like more, the DS has sold exponentially more units, and exponentially more software. It doesn't matter if you think it's shovelware; it's all money for Nintendo, and in the gaming BUSINESS, that's success. The iOS platform despite being much younger than the PSP has also trounced it. More devices, more software. It doesn't matter if you think it's crap. Your opinion < Hard data.
In my opinion, Sony's failure to capitalize on the mobile market shows a misunderstanding of the modern portable game space; Sony has been trying to bring the home console on the road, leaving devs to try and shoehorn a home gaming experience onto a tiny screen with only one (piss poor) analogue stick, while DS and iOS devs take advantage of the capabilities of the hardware. The best DS games, like the best iOS games, are ones that can only be successful on a device with a touchscreen. Can you imagine drawing the boomerang path from either Zelda DS game with your analogue nub rather than the touchscreen? (probably not, since you didn't play either) What about Angry Birds played with the finicky analogue nub? (also not, since you didn't play it either) My point is that Sony's design philosophy since after the PS2 release seems to be an also-ran one; take whatever the competition is doing and do it harder, longer, bigger. Xbox 360 ushered in high definition gaming. Sony: Hey, our console has 1080p! Wii brings about motion control. Sony: Hey, look at OUR new Wiimo- I mean, move controller! Nintendo sells millions of GameBoy advances. Sony: Hey, our PSP has PS2-almost graphics with half the control capabilities! The problem isn't whether one likes or dislikes the console, it's that the PSP would be an utter failure if it weren't for a very small number of very good games. Frankly, each and every one of those games, outside of patapon, I'd prefer to play on a large screen with a dualshock3. And that's a problem. When your portable console has nothing unique to stand on, it will thrive or bust at the hands of developers, rather than one that incorporates a unique element that brings developers with unique ideas to the table.
Seriously, you idiot fanboys make me hate the fact that I love my PS3.
A bit more excited than the 3DS, but hey that's just me. I hope they add dual analogs, 2nd shoulder buttons, and more connectivity with the ps3 than before.
Please keep the phone off my portable gaming system. Nothing more irritating than having a game interrupted by an important call.
Not neccesarily. Sony also has to battle strong brand recognition.
What Sony needs to do is not try to take on the 3DS but rather do their own thing. You can't fight Nintendo. The only company that can do harm to Nintendo is Nintendo.
Why the sad face? Do you know something I don't? TELL ME
This is a day 1 buy. No doubt.
I get the feeling you don't know what exponential means.
3DS or PSP2?
Ugghhhhhhhhhh
