Right, postpone the game and lose a bunch of money developing more characters without knowing if the game is a hit. The longer it takes, the more money it will cost. If the game doesn't sell, no DLC is bound to happen anyway.
I'd like some new characters, as well as some new skins for that matter, tired of always seeing the same costumes for the characters.
tough shit, that's how it works. You make a game and sell it. If it's good, it'll sell. If not, then you fucked up and need to do better next time. Developers need to stop jerking us around with deliberately excluded content just to charge us extra. I'm sick of paying $60 for an incomplete game. And I'd rather wait longer for a fully-developed game that's as good as it should be than get a half-assed product a few months sooner just to fork out extra cash later on.
The nickel-and-dime bullshit needs to stop, but it never will at this point.
It looks like we are being promised a full game. They most likely have a development timeline and through a series of meetings have decided what characters they can fit into the game. They only have so many resources and money.
So after the game is released and they have free time they can start developing things that weren't necessary for the game, but they can now devote the proper amount of time and resources to.
-First there are exclusive costumes as preorder bonus (in different stores).
-Then there are console specific characters (sorry, 360 fans, but it is likely there is not going to be someone exclusive that console) with no chance of being ported to other consoles (even as DLC)
-Then they confirmed that costumes and fatalities will be available as DLC (yes, they are charging for animations)
And now they say characters will be sold as DLC too?
Boon, this is BS... If you are truly trying to turn MK into a tournament worthy game, and to get over the bad karma, these are the kind of moves that are not going to help.
Hell yea I'll pay for Kenshi and Rain to be playable. Yet they need to chillout if they want this to be a tourny worthy game. We don't need another MK Trilogy or Armageddon.
@hermes
If I have to buy fatalities I will not be buying this game until I find it used for $20.
and please put in some crazy easter eggs, like dan forden's "toasty"
i loved those
sized) and costumes is fine as I never bother but paying for fucking fatalities!?! Man I ain't paying more for the most enticing element of the series!
Also I'm all for new characters, because those four suck balls.
But they aren't holding back content. They're talking about things that they can do IF the game sells well. My point was that if they took the suggestions and postponed the game they might just lose tons more money if it doesn't sell.
Also, good game =/= good sales. Ever heard of fan favourites like Okami, Beyond Good and Evil or Psychonauts?
Those games you mention were original IPs with lackluster or nonexistant marketing. It's true that quality doesn't always result in good sales, but Mortal Kombat is a well-known fighting brand with a huge established roster of characters to include and, despite a few weak entries in the past decade, MK still carries a bit of nostalgia for many people. I don't think it has quite so much to worry about in terms of at least getting people to try it out.
I don't think simply giving us as many MK characters that will fit on a disc is as much of a risk as you think.
But they'll have 30 characters on disc already, at leas, check out the menu on some gameplay videos...
Why is this even an issue? That's a no-brainer.
BREAKING NEWS: NOOB SAIBOT is TOBIAS BOON......BACKWARDS!
I STRONGLY suggest you put all these would-be DLC chars on the disc from start, even if you have to delay a bit. Actually on second thought, they're not worth adding except Tanya.
@redeemer,
You're an idiot. Tell you what, here's where the games industry could break even with your demands.
1. Stop renting games or buying used, only new sales are good for them. Because NEW sales means Best Buy, target, Etc will order more copies and thus they get more money selling to those outlets. Buying used destroys that and unlike every other media format out there, video games only have two points of profit. New Game Sales and DLC.
2. This silly idea of what was a full game or not is 100% fabrication on your part. As far back as floppy disks, content was constantly being cut due to time and budget constraints. Once upon a time, we called this stuff "expansion packs." If you're comfortable with stuff being chopped from games and we never see/hear about it until years and years later (see Mystic Mountain in Chrono Trigger or the MK Court in NBA Jam), that's fine.
But right now, MK9 is essentially done. It has to be done because now it's on a bug hunt and playbalancing cycle. Which means, right now, several artists are either working on some other project that hasn't started production yet, or twiddling their thumbs, or in major danger of hitting the unemployment office. DLC like this gives other people stuff to do when NORMALLY, these people would be taking several month long unpaid vacations or migrating from studio to studio.
In other words, this DLC is essentially win-win. Fans of the franchise win because they get more content of what they love without having to wait two years for a sequel (ie: Rock Band Store). The development studio wins because they get to keep key workers busy on something while their next project is getting ready to begin production. The only people unhappy about this are miserable little bastards who need something to bitch about to make sure their day goes forward without a hitch.
