More Wheel of Times games coming, get excited photo

Red Eagle Entertainment, owner of the newly acquired film rights to fantasy author Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series, are planning to have several games made to accompany the films. This is not a terrible idea, and the previous Wheel of Time game was excellently done.

Judging from the success and brilliance of all the Lord of the Rings movie-to-games, it’s easy to assume that WoT will translate just as well. The first movie (and subsequent game we’re guessing) is The Eye of the World – a wonderful account of a young boy named Rand coming to know his destiny and traveling throughout an unfamiliar world rife with turmoil, evil dudes, and more evil dudes.

I’ve read a lot of fantasy and I honestly think this is quite possibly the worst idea ever. George R.R. Martin, John Marco, or even a bit of Terry Goodkind would be much better suited for games. At the very least, the Wheel of Time games should include many “icy” or “cold” stare mini-games for the Wii crowd.

I'm confused.
Is it "not a terrible idea" or "the worst idea ever?"

A Wheel of Time game? The last one wasn't good at all.

I dragged my destructoid account out of stasis to comment on this. Making a movie of off WoT? I approve.

Also, will they include a wiimote waggling minigame for pulling Nynaeve's braid? And what about crossing your arms under your bosom?

I love the series, but I just can't see how they will effectively create an inventive system that allows you to channel. If they do the channeling well, in an original (i.e. non button mashing or random combo way) the rest of the game should fall into place. If it's just a press X then Y then B for Balefire, that will suck.

@casualweaponry- nice Nynaeve reference. Bonus nerd points!

Your written sarcasm skills are faltering.
*crosses arms beneath breasts*
*looks down on you without actually being taller*
*describes a random bathroom over the course of four pages*

... Now I know what would be awesome. A Wheel of Time TEXT ADVENTURE! Where the side quests take up 90 percent of the game, and you have to read five pages of text between each command!

Seriously, though, the WoT series might actually make a good TV series or something, seeing as the plot was pretty good, and TV stuff doesn't get bogged down with description. Unless they try to make it ultra-faithful by slowly zooming in on each doorknob and broomstick and... Okay, okay, I'll let it go.

How about a mini-game where you get all emo and sulky over the disastrous predicament of having three hot chicks chasing after you?

I lost interest in the series by book four or so and picked up the Terry Goodkind Sword of Truth series. That turned to crap about halfway through but at least I finished that one.

I've never knew there was a game based on Wheel of Time. To Google!

At least here when characters say the same things over and over it'll be just like the book.

I'm a huge fan of the books, but I have no desire to see them made into games. It simply won't work unless Red Eagle Entertainment has the Dark One's own luck.

If you read this article you have to read this article:
http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/11/12/hbo-greenlights-fantasy-television-pilot-for-george-rr-martins-a-game-of-thrones/

Also, if you read that article, you have to read that book. I haven't tried the Wheel of Time series for the same reason i don't play WoW -- I still have a soul -- but I agree with Brad, the Game of Thrones book is fucking awesome. I just started it not long ago. I'm assuming the whole Song of Ice and Fire series will be just as amazing.

The series that got so bogged down in minutiae, even the author croaked before getting through it all.

What, too soon?

I actually think a game would be the best path for the series, seeing how the books move slowly, One book might only be one month of real time, or very quickly, covering several months quickly. Casting someone for potentially 12 movies would be impossible, plus you would age too much.

Agreed that way to much of the book describes inanimate objects.

Trickfred, fuck you! (apparently too soon as that is my knee jerk reaction)
I think the series would make great american RPGs ala Mass Effect or Fallout.
And a Matt mini-game where you seduce bar maids would be awesome.

Golden Avatar has the right of it. I just finished rereading the series for the fourth or fifth time. They may be my favorite book series ever, and they have the potential to be some of the best TV ever as well.

@John Solgrim

It's going to be a TV series? Oh no... the first book was great, but the rest of the series got progressively worse. I can't imagine what they'll do to a TV series.

I read through the first 7 books when I was like 12 or 13. I was really into the books, but then I put them down for a while and never picked them back up. Maybe I'll go back and give it a second shot.

@Fronz

I have spent the last two days orgasming continuously over the Game of Thrones pilot. It's going to be the greatest show in the history of television.

As for a WoT movie, it just means we'll get one decent movie, and then 14 shitty ones that explain nothing. WoT should have been at MOST a 6 or 7 book series, and that's pushing it.

@Aerox: MUST SEE. NOW. HELLP.

@Fronz: The books are the best I've read, flat-out.

@MechaMonkey: It may hurt, but I suggest looking up the show "The Seeker." It's going to suck a whole ton of ass. I still like the books though, they have some awesome characters in there. I haven't read Chainfire and beyond yet though.

Yeah, let's make Terry Goodkind's books into games. Maybe we can take the Sister of the Dark initiation and make it a Quicktime Event.

...you know what, on the other hand, they might have to leave that out. And the fanboys would probably complain there isn't enough rape in the final product. Screw it, this game would be a horrible idea.

It's easy for people to give Jordan a hard time -- and I'm not excluding myself from that list -- but when you start looking at the series as a whole, everything through Lord of Chaos is great to good. Books 7, 8, and 9 are where everything starts to grind to a bathroom-describing halt, no debate here. Yet, I thought it really started to pick up again in Crossroads of Twilight, and Knife of Dreams was the best book since the mid-90s.

It took a crazy amount of guts and faith and dedication and vision for Peter Jackson to do what he did with Lord of the Rings. It'd take an effort beyond that to turn the thousands and thousands of pages of text that is the Wheel of Time into a watchable movie or TV mini-series. And I think a respectable game would require near the same amount of attention. Possible? Definitely. Hell, with the right people behind such projects, it'd even be probable. But... I just don't see it coming together all that easily.

These games will be a huge disappointment if they are not at least 300 hours EACH. If you can't do the source material justice you shouldn't do it at all!

Chainfire is where things start to suck hard. I mean, from Temple of the Winds on it was a bit of a phone-in, but Chainfire basically lasts for another three books and drags on and on and on. Like Robert Jordan, now that I think about it. The final book is good but then ending is abrupt and I was left feeling "really? that's it? after ten books?"

But anyway, definitely worth finishing, if only for the sake of closure.

I really like the books. But the only way I can see a game based on this working is using a Diablo like game engine, with different storylines for each character. But this is probably too much work if they just want to make some quick "we-are-selling-a-game-because-we-have-a-movie"-cash :(

I quit Wot after book 9...it got far too complicated adding 5 chapters to reveal useless characters and new plotlines when everything could have ended after book 7

Ummm.. They're going to make a Wheel of Time movie?

Ok, let's see... The Lord of the Rings has roughly 1000 pages and translated into almost ten hours worth of movie. All Wheel of Time books combined should amount to roughly 8.000 to 10.000 pages worth of epic fantasy.

So either they cut A LOT or they'll end up with quite a long movie. Maybe this would be better of as an HBO series?
Fronz's Avatar - Comment posted on 11/13/2008 08:18

@ Rainbowblack: no way, the Song of Ice and Fire series shouldn't be condensed to a movie, a series would give it the attention it deserves. thank God it's HBO and not prime time, it will be done right.

@ Aerox: Pilot? Pilot?! Are you saying there's a video trailer up already or did you just expand on what I said in a misleading manner which is punishable by exile?! I have a friend who would flip out if there was a trailer video already.

"Guess its worth mentioning here that Robert Jordan died without finishing his last book in the WoT series."

A friend of his who is also a great writer is finishing the series. Unsurprisingly Robert Jordan's notes are very detailed.

As long as they're not trying to convey the WoT's plot in great detail, they game could be good.
