More Sonic 4 details, game inspired by Sonic 2 photo

The Sonic the Hedgehog 4 details just keep pouring in, and it all seems to be good news, too. Some fresh details have surfaced from that hub of information known as NeoGAF, providing more insight into what keeps promising to be a terrific title.

Here's the latest gossip:

  • The game will be a platformer only: No mini games and extra crap (although classic bonus stages are on the cards).
  • The level design is said to be inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
  • Episode one will have four zones with three acts each.
  • Jun Senoue is the sound director/composer.
  • The classic "wrecking ball" boss fight at the end of Splash Hill will involve new attacks, such as a ground smash and 360 degree swing.
  • Future episodes may have new skills for Sonic.

I'm not saying Sonic 4 will definitely be great, but as a lifelong fan of classic platformers, I'm saying it definitely can't hurt to have a little faith. Even if this didn't star Sonic, it looks like the exact kind of game that I'd want to play and I can't wait to finally get my hands on it.

NEW ATTACKS?! OMGWTFBBQ THEY'RE RUINING SONIC!

Seriously, though, 4 zones? I wait until all the episodes are out and buy them as a single pack.

4 zones, that doesn't seem like much at all.
I hope this game is really cheap.

Four Zones with three stages each is more than decent for 400 points. One of my worries about episodic content was that there would only be a couple of zones per episode. BTW I'm judging zone length by previous Sonic games. Four is close to a full Sonic game.

Sounds awesome to me!

I wish it had 6 zones like the old sonics (I don't count the final zone, since its just a boss fight). But I won't be picky. I'll take any old school sonic gameplay i can get.

Depending on price, four zones is great. There are whispers that this'll be a 400 Pointer, which would be terrific, although that's not confirmed.

As far as money is concerned, SEGA is gonna milk this one hard. 10 bucks minimum per episode.

The colour palette used for the clouds in the background disgusts me, therefore I am going to boycott this game.

I hope sega dies in an unfortunate teabagging incident

The only other Sega composer I know of is Yuzo Koshiro. He should have been involved somehow.

So they're gonna ruin a classic boss fight by giving it a new ground pound and 360 swing move, figures. When will developers learn that if it ain't broke, don't fix it or make it better in any way. Idiots.

I hope no mini-games doesn't include those wicked Chaos Emerald stages. I liked those.

Classic bonus stages to get Chaos Emeralds are coming back, apparently. Just clarified in the post.

4 zones sounds about right for the price. Now that the entire internet has already seen that picture with the 400 MS points next to it, they can expect a shitstorm if it ends up being 800. Followed by pretty much the same amount of sales of course, since people complain more than they act on it :)

How about they include the bonus stages from the 1&2? Say you get 50 rings, hit a checkpoint and get a bonus stage, or collect 100 and risk getting to the end of the stage and get a different one. I always found the Sonic 1 stages easier so they could be the 100 ring.

Sorry, im just a bit exited for this.

I was kinda hoping for more than 4 zones, but with 3 acts each, I suppose that's a pretty good deal.

The only question I want answered is how long we're going to have to wait for the 2nd installment and so forth. Anyone know yet? Or did I miss it somewhere.

I'll be replaying this a lot anyway, so 12 acts is more than enough for me. Hopefully the bosses pose some real threat and aren't just "homing attack until it dies".

The question is do I bother buying Episode 1 or wait for all of the episodes to be released on one disc like almost all episodic games do?

Sounds all good for 400msp, though I think I'll wait 'til it's all released in one nice pack. Either way still interested - so far, so good.

"As far as money is concerned, SEGA is gonna milk this one hard. 10 bucks minimum per episode."

$10/ep = $10 for four zones
12 eps
48 zones for 120 bucks
so... the price of 2 regular games for what... the equivalent of 6 brand-new sonic games? Sounds like a hell of a deal to me. Keep in mind I'm using the high-tech art of assumption that you're using.

Ugh. Three acts? I kind of preferred the 2-act structure of Sonic 2 and 3. I always felt that each world overstayed its welcome in the 3rd act.

Also, I'm REALLY not sure I like the sound of "new skills"...

So this is a weird decision.

Platformer. That's good.
I preferred Sonic 3's level design, though.
Three acts? In Sonic 3 you had two acts with different music and graphics, with a midboss in the middle. I sure as hell hope they still do that.
Jun Senoue, eh? On the one hand, Sonic 3, on the other, Crush 40. Hm.
New attacks for Sonic? I can smell some hair-brained ideas. In fact, I can practically see them.

Still cynical, but still hoping.

4 zones seems like enough to warrant a ten bucks as a price-tag. If it's coming as five dollars, it means it's even better. I can't remember how many episodes there were planned, I think it was four or three, so that's 12-16 zones, which is fucking fantastic.

Screenshots like the one at the top of the article are the very reason I lose hope of Sonic 4 being any more than passable.
Inspired by Sonic 2? It's only one screenshot here, but it looks like a straight up Sonic 2 with updated graphics.
I've played that level before. Can't they even be bothered to come up with new scenery? Or do I have to wait and buy the end episodes for that?

Not to sound redundant, Jim, but I always have faith. Only this time I'm pretty fucking sure I have nothing to worry about. I, honestly, haven't been this excited for a Sonic game since 3!
Am I a little irritated at the episodic nature of this sequel? Yes, although now I'll be more inclined to slowing down and exploring each zone a bit more. As opposed to running through levels too quickly. Which isn't a bad thing. Only, that has always been a dilemma, for me, with Sonic games. It's Sonic, so you want to go fast, only it's a platformer so you want to slow down and explore the level. =/ Damn.
Whatever, I still loved Sonic 1, 2 and 3! Can't wait for 4! =)
I'm coming to get you Robotnik, er, I mean, Eggman! Ivo.
