Right now, all sights are set on Other M, the beautiful Wii Metroid game that is set to be released next year. But what about Metroid Prime? Was it all over with Metroid Prime 3: Corruption? Maybe not.
Nintendo's Kensuke Tanabe, who previously oversaw Retro Studios' work, gives Prime fans a glimmer of hope in a quote from the next issue of Official Nintendo Magazine:
We are always planning to make new games in the Metroid Prime series. Depending on the timing and the situation, we cannot deny the possibility of realising it on DS or DSi.
It's been a few years, and I think it's high time we see something new. A DSi game wouldn't get in the way of the Other M Wii release, so what's stopping you. What do you think Retro's been up to?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Please, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS PURE AND HOLY, make it a goddamn 2D side-scroller!
The remake of Zero Mission as well as Metroid Fusion left players with some unanswered questions. I think its high time they get to exploring them. I'd think being wanted as a fugitive of the Galactic Federation would open up some new doors for the series. I'd also like to see a game about the Chozo Warrior who first donned the Power Suit. What's his story?

Exactly how much of Metroid Prime have you actually played? The Prime series is Metroid through and through, perfectly capturing the exploration, isolation, insane power-ups, puzzles, and atmosphere that made Super Metroid so great. I'm all about 2D Metroid, but saying that Prime should never have been made sounds awfully pretentious.
Metroid Dread
he game is believed to have been cancelled, with Nintendo having recently stated that it is not in development.
Did you read the Wiki you linked?
i want more 2d metroid, but i'm not buying a wii or a ds to play it on. i wish nintendo would just get with the fucking program and release something on a real console. otherwise i'll just have to wait for someone to program a wii emulator for my pocket calculator.
So you want a Nintendo game but you don't want a Nintendo system?
Next you'll tell me you want to communicate verbally but hate the hassle of having a mouth. Or you want sex but you don't want to spend any money.
Dead because Nintendo doesn't care about 2D Metroid and its fans anymore.
@Necros: Hasn't Nintendo said that the point of Other M was to get the focus back on the 2D elements? They have practically ever major person who created the 2D games on the team for it. As for Dread, I think Nintendo is still on the fence about it. Maybe after they see the response to Other M they will make their decision.
Nintendo is releasing lots major games on the Wii. Two (or three, if you count NSMB Wii) major Mario games, two major Metroid games and, uh, a Zelda game. Twilight Princess doesn't count. When the next generation of consoles comes about we'll all be happily discussing the Wii because though it didn't have much, what it did have was top-notch.
@matrixdude171: Seriously? It's not even being milked like Mario or Pokémon. It's really popular, just the announcement of Other M at the E3 09 conference had loads of people get unbelievably psyched. Metroid has absolutely no reason to die, you silly twat.
It is not a difficult concept. 3D on consoles, 2D on handhelds.
Love,
Everyone who has ever bought a Metroid game.
Its not a dead project, according to the direct when he spoke with IGN, but it is shelved for the time being.
if you're a dumbass like me you'll break your ds touchscreen using that bloody thumbpad
i didn't think it was the controls that made metroid hunters disappointing just the boring single player and the tacked on multi :/
graphics were awesome though (like it matters)
What we really need is....
Mach Rider 2
Vortex 2
Blastcorps 2
Pilotwings 3
F-Zero 7
More Star Fox
Most of these games haven't been used since NES, SNES and N64 eras. Stop messing about Nintendo, and properly go through your vaults. Mario, Zelda, Metroid and Wii Fit is not all we want from you.
The Prime Trilogy was outstanding, and I'd love another 3D Metroid, but Hunters (which was NOT developed by Retro, btw) left much to be desired (i.e. exploration, a control scheme that didn't twist your hands into unrecognizable claws, etc.). Plus, a certain demographic of gamer would lose it over a new 2D Metroid.
@ psycho terror2 - I know several folks have already pointed out how dumb you are, but seriously, the Wii is a real console. It just has a different audience. NSMBWii is an amazing game, but stuffing that disk into you Xbox won't get you any Mario Goodness. Seriously, if you want nintendo games, buy a nintendo, douchenozzle.
@Cowboy - We DO want more metroid. Seven titles over twenty odd years is a lot for some franchises, but not for Nintendo. Though I totally agree; more Pilotwings Plz.
@Many other - Prime: Hunters was a terrible game. I wanted so badly to like it, but the level design was horrible, the powerups severely lacking, and the story ridiculous. Other bounty hunters? WTF, ninty?
