Here, have a trailer for House of the Dead: Overkill, which is fanastic in its camp, pulp horror movie silliness. Due for release early next year, this brand new House of the Dead is being developed by Headstrong games, who are promising that this will be a fresh and original title for the Wii.

According to the press release (after the jump), this new House of the Dead will sport a new "retro" look and will include motion-sensitive pistol whipping. What more could a Wii owner ask for?  It's already looking a bit better than Chop 'Til You Drop, at any rate.

LEIPZIG (August 19th, 2008) – SEGA® Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced The House of the Dead: OVERKILL, an all-new  pulp-horror reinvention of the classic SEGA light-gun shooter franchise.  Created by London-based studio Headstrong Games, The House of the Dead: OVERKILL will take you right back to the beginning of this classic horror series. Available exclusively on the Nintendo Wii early in 2009 and announced to coincide with Games Convention at Leipzig, The House of the Dead: OVERKILL will be presented live by developer Headstrong Games for specially invited members of the press in SEGA’s business centre suite.

The House of the Dead: OVERKILL uncovers the ugly, terrifying, red hot secrets behind the House of the Dead; the daddy of all over-the-top shooters.  While staying true to the classic gameplay this hugely successful SEGA series is getting a new retro look, with distinctive graphics, sound and attitude that will add to its horror cool status.  Plus, thanks to the Wii Remote™, players will fight off zombies when they get too close; pistol-whipping jaws off and smashing in skulls with their shotgun butt.

“We wanted to do something really different with The House of the Dead: OVERKILL,” commented Bradley Crooks, Studio Head at Headstrong Games. “With SEGA we’ve been able to create a fresh look for the franchise. I think you’ll agree it’s like nothing you’ve seen before on Wii.”

“Paying homage to the pulp horror comics and films that inspired generations of gore fans, The House of the Dead: OVERKILL will expose gamers to a brand-new fleshy rollercoaster ride of revolting dismemberment,” commented Gary Knight, European Marketing Director at SEGA Europe. “This is the hardcore Wii title you’ve been waiting for.”

The House of the Dead: OVERKILL takes you back to when Special Agent G was fresh out of the academy.  Teamed up with hard-boiled bad-ass Detective Washington, they are sent to investigate stories of mysterious disappearances in small-town Louisiana. Little do they know what blood-soaked mutant depravity awaits them in the streets and swamps of Bayou City…

The House of the Dead: OVERKILL will be released in early 2009, exclusively for Nintendo Wii. For more information about the game, please visit www.houseofthedeadoverkill.com.

Good trailer, looks like they've finally accepted the (unintended) tongue and cheek nature of HotD games. Looks like fun!!

What a fantastically cheesy trailer. I don't really care about this game, but the trailer has got me a little interested.

Looks like somebodey watched that Grindhouse double bill a few times before setting to work on the trailer. Trailer looks like a cross between Planet Terror and the Machete trailer (which SO needs a full length movie NAO).

I really enjoyed the 70's cheesy style too! And the not so subtle reference to "hardcore" gamers (I guess the meat man has ears after all)... But I was in shock when I saw the "map of the bayou" near the end: it's actually a map of "Ile de France", the region of Paris, where I live. I don't know if the game -or any part of it- was made by French people, but I can't wait for zombies to show up! My guns are in bad need of some "overkilling" (the game looks as good as its title is lousy)!

Oh god, yes! A 70's drive-in/grind house horror game! Somebody's been reading my dream journal! I just hope that the final product really matches the feel of this trailer. If it even comes close it will easily replace Typing of the Dead as my favorite in the series.

I hope the game lives up to that trailer. I'm also hoping they'll put the original House of the Dead on there as an unlockable.

As long as them ripping off Grindhouse isn't just limited to cool trailers and actually influences the game, then that's really promising.

Awesome. I hope it has plenty of content to extend beyond the typically short main game rail shooters sport. Such as ...

- Different level paths like in 'StarFox 64.'
- Online leaderboards for speedruns per level and the overall game.
- A boss rush mode, perhaps.
WutDaHeckMan's Avatar
WutDaHeckMan at 08/19/2008 12:01
thats what it needs:

the on-rails shooters generally clock in at what, 4-7 hours?

this is the "next gen" they need to put love into other aspects. make it a multi-path game. give it online interactivity, give it a good difficulty and make use of strategies. give it replay. assign multiple animations for each particular shot per hitbox. The screens on IGN don't look that impressive. and headstrong already stated the single player wont be lengthy. I want to be able to pick off different body parts, sections of head, and have the zombies react accordingly. maybe even change the way they walk, attack, the damage they do. give it depth, rather than jsut another on rails a few shots kill. repeat. I can get that in raving rabbids with a plunger.

you can quote me because none of what I just said will happen.
...well maybe this "on rails a few shots kill. repeat."

Good commercial, but....another lightgun game? Why go back to before Goldeneye and instead go for another FPS/TPS? I dont' see the appeal of lightgun games anymore except for some co-oop action.
