Well, the people have voted, and the latest batch of Guitar Hero Smash Hits have been revealed. No surprises -- hell, they're all from the first Guitar Hero, which came out four years ago -- but interesting nonetheless. They are:
- Pantera - "Cowboys From Hell (Live)"
- Franz Ferdinand - "Take Me Out"
- Queens of the Stone Age - "No One Knows"
- Joan Jett & the Blackhearts - "I Love Rock N' Roll"
- Boston - "More Than A Feeling"
- White Zombie - "Thunder Kiss '65"
- Blue Oyster Cult - "Godzilla"
- Helmet - "Unsung (Live)"
- Queen - "Killer Queen"
- Incubus - "Stellar"
- Ozzy Osbourne - "Bark At The Moon"
- Deep Purple - "Smoke On The Water"
- The Donnas - "Take It Off"
- The Exies - "Hey You"
It's interesting to note that some of the tracks which appeared as covers in the original game are now live tracks, possibly because of unusable or unavailable masters. What's up Activision, couldn't get Helmet back into the studio?
In case you haven't been following, Guitar Hero Smash Hits is the upcoming full band "best of." The game will use the base Guitar Hero World Tour engine, throwing in the "best" tracks from the older, guitar-only games. So far, the list looks pretty damned incredible, and it may turn out to be the best standalone collection of on-discs songs yet. But I can't help to shake the "this could have and should have been downloadable content" feeling.
Also, The Exies? Really?

The cover of No One Knows was just awful.
I mean this with the greatest respect but... you really need to get out more often. (Or play Guitar Hero 1.)
How can they get away with this?! Make more things like Guitar Hero Metallica!
Well, I started on plastic-instrument games with World Tour, and have yet to be inspired to get any DLC, so this smash hits pack might work for me. Then again, I still only have the guitar, so maybe just buying and playing GH1 would be cheaper...
Also, this list needs more Ziggy Stardust.
And Even Rats would've rocked, but I guess we won't be seeing many bonus songs.
I doubt a re-recording of Unsung would sound all that spiffy today.
Epic, can't wait to play the master of Killer Queen! :D
I need that song! Now it's gonna be harder to wait a year to buy this on the cheap.
# Queens of the Stone Age - "No One Knows"
# Boston - "More Than A Feeling"
I had no idea these songs were Guitar Hero 1.
Almost.
When is this due out anyway?
When is this due out anyway?
Judgment Day; aka when people pay for re-packaged content for a re-packaged/milk game :D
When I was at Harmonix for play testing awhile back, I spoke with a few guys and they indicated that it was one of their favorite songs. It was one of my favorites from GH1 as well.
I really hope that we see: "Heart Full of Black" and "Even Rats" (as a bonus track) get included as well.
"But I can't help to shake the "this could have and should have been downloadable content" feeling."
Ugh...I'd rather "own" the content on a disc than have it be DLC where I wouldn't purchase it. Too much is availble only in the downloadable space, give to me on discs.
It wasn't so much a dig on the band or the song as much as it just doesn't fit with the rest of the tracks. They're all huge hits by (relatively) huge bands. It sticks out like a sore thumb.
Bad Religion - "Infected"
Black Sabbath - "Iron Man"
The Edgar Winter Group - "Frankenstein"
Megadeth - "Symphony of Destruction"
"Smoke on the Water" is a great song, yes. But to play it on Guitar Hero is dull as hell. And I certainly don't need to play it as soon as June.
I bought it as DLC for GHII on 360 years ago (you know, the FIRST time they tried repackaging old songs) and then again when I picked up the first GH on sale. I don't think Activision can squeeze a 3rd payment out of me.
The lack of "know One Knows" "Killing in the name of" "You really got me" "Knights of Cydonia" "Ruby" or even "fat lip" is disappointing. Also where's the Guns and Roses?
