Good fan made games come from a pure, unadulterated love of their source material. Some may be a bit hard to play due to either bugs or bad design, but as long as they have heart they'll be worth the price of admission (free). Questionale storyline aside, Super Mario Fusion: Mushroom Kingdom Hearts has more heart than any fan made game I've played in a while, and I have played me a few in that last couple of months.
First spotted in video form by our own MadNinja and then subsequently added to that week's Weekend Destructainment, Super Mario Fusion is a work in progress made with the free game design program Game Maker 7. The game currently consists of eight levels; six in the traditional Mario vein, one Mega Man themed, and one Halo themed. It's hard not to love the game based on it's concept alone.
More on the game's demo and how to get it after the jump.
[Via Kotaku]
The demo of the game can be obtained on MegaUpload.com via this link. This demo doesn't force you to play it's levels in any particular order, so if you want to jump straight to the Mega Man or Halo levels, go to it. Controls consist of the keyboard arrow buttons for movement, shift to jump, Z to dash/use weapon, and escape to quit. If there are more, I haven't figured them out yet.
According to the YouTube page of the game's creator JudgeSpear, he or she plans to add a Sonic, a Mega man, a Castlevania, a SHMUPS(?), and a "special Nintendo themed world" to the finished product, with Kirby, Link, Samus all involved in some capacity. Will all three be addtional playable characters? Only JudgSpear knows for sure.
Yeah, if you're reading this JudgeSpear, let me tell you now that I'm watching you. You better make due on the promises you've made, because getting our hopes up would just be unfair. Also, play through as many of the other Mario hacks out there as you can, there is a lot you could learn/steal from them. Like why not throw in the Laser Suit power up from that old Mario hack from last year? I think it would fit in quite well with the rest of the ideas you've borrowed.
And one last thing, putting Bionic Commando in you game may win you some free stuff.
Actually, that goes for all of you Destructoid readers. A link to the Game Maker 7 site dwells in this very post, and a fan made Bionic Commando game, no matter how shabby, sure would be a great entry to my contest.
So get right on that, 'kay?
id love to see nintendo actually do crossover games that wernt smash bros. but jsut like two characters. like kirby/mario platformer.
