Also, I agree with muad. Although the overtones would be pretty dark, battle royale (the movie) would translate into a pretty cool game.

You know, as trendy as it is to have a crossover fighter, I'm much more partial to other genres being explored. Pokemon Conquest was not something anyone would have anticipated and its because we never would have thought of it that its compelling. Same thing with Kingdom Hearts when it started out.
I just can't get excited for these Smash Bros. and MVC knock-offs.
What about a team-up title where Kratos and Rau from Mark of Kri team up? Mix up Little Big Planet with No Heroes Allowed.
Anything but yeet another brawler cash-in. Nintendo and Capcom have that covered.

Not that Smash Bros couldn't use competition, but I really just don't care about the Sony stars. Ratchet and Clank along with Sly Cooper make sense, but everyone else is so damn serious.
I don't think Sony even has the savvy to make these characters work together in a sensible way. When you look at Smash Bros or even Dissidia, there's an awareness of what these characters could mean to each other.
The Samus and Pikachu pairing is so adorable it makes sense and there are many more instances of that sort of thing uncovered between characters in Smash Bros. Solid Snake brings his codecs into each battle, a Nintendog popping up to block the screen - the game is just so self-aware its hysterical.
I just don't think Sony has someone like Sakurai with that sort of view for their game. What's more is that Ono brings that same endearing mentality to MVC. Viewtiful Joe riding Amaterasu in one instance and dressing up as Captain America the next while She-Hulk and Pheonix Wright go to court.

To be fair though, classic PlayStation characters are decent. But lately for them it's been "Guy with a chain smoker's voice", "Guy with a one liner voice", and "Guy with a gun."

I don't how to feel about this. Sony doesn't have that many characters to work with( unless they decide to get some third parties), an most of their first party games fall into the M rated category (God of War, Twisted Metal, Killzone, etc.), so does that mean it's going be an M rated game thus isolating some potential customers, or are the characters in question going to be softened to get an "E" or "T" rating?
Also I think it's safe to say that if given the choice, I think most people would want to play as Mario or Link in a smash game setting as opposed to Ratchet or Kratos. But then again, maybe I'm wrong and this will be awesome.

Could be cool if its fun. I dont give a shit if the characters fit and or work together well. And it does not matter if is is vastly different then smash bros because they will still be called out for copying nintendo because nintendo "invented" crossover fighting games of course.
I'm imagining a bunch of rugged well groomed white men, going up against a group of random anime characters, and random animatronic animals with guns. Not to say the concept doesn't sound awesome, just would hope that Sony goes into it's large list of console exclusive titles, and is able to make a list that would make SSBB's roster look like a sick joke. Give me PaRappa, or even Robbit, and I'd put money down on it.
When I saw the title for this article I thought it was going to be a game based off the novel/film "Battle Royale"... I wish that was true. D:
While I do own a PS3, there's no way I'll buy this. Sony has really run out of ideas lately and I'd be very if the PS4 never saw the light of day. Then Naughty Dog and Santa Monica Studios could develop for a different system and save me from having to buy all three systems again next gen.
I'm diggin it. I just hope it's not actually called Playstation All-Stars Battle Royal. That's a horrible title.
I Liked SSB a lot and its still one of the most played game series when I have friends over. I hope sony can create something equally great here and the most important thing they should take notes of is no complicated combos those are not needed for such a game and only make it less fun (half drunk)

I think about this game and I just cant see Sony pulling off something like that, at least not when you compare em to Nintendo characters, which have way more appeal and personality than most of Sony characters.

I can't name one director or team at Sony with the personality to pull it off. In fact, aside from Jaffe and Ueda, I can't name anyone that made games for Sony.
We saw how Heroes on the Move turned out, too. Sony woolf need a Sakhrai, Ono or Nomura to even make it work
Barring that, is there anyone with as deep an emotional attachment to Sony characters as many gamers have for Nintendo.
Sony has the IPs, but I have to admit even Master Chief has more charm than the lot of Sony characters and that's all Microsoft really has.

Definatly a rental. Same thing that happened when SSB came out, i needed to try it before I went out and bought such an untested IP.
