More detail from Square president, no more non-mainstream games allowed photo

So you enjoyed The World Ends With You? Too bad. You won't be seeing anything remotely like it from Square-Enix anytime soon, according to company president Yoichi Wada, who recently issued an ultimatum to his staff: if any games are made that don't fit into the mainstream's circle of interest, job cuts will follow. So long, unique concepts that break the mold!

This was supposedly part of a heated business meeting in which Square discussed the results of their 2007 fiscal year, which were none too sunny, showing general profits down 20 percent and taking the worst of it in overseas sales.

Business is business, but I have to say my heart sank when I read those words. If Square was doing anything I was excited to see, it was things outside the Final Fantasy spectrum, but financial troubles like this certainly excise any hope of experimental titles in the future (at least until the numbers improve). I'm glad to see the giant falter a bit, if only in hopes that the results will push them towards a more focused future.

Yes the world ends with you is good. Can you give it more than a freaking MONTH before you pull it? Seriously its been out localized for that long, and in the case you don't happen to live in the US chances are IS NOT EVEN AVAIABLE FOR SALE on most places, ive been literally hanging around all game stores in my cities and they won't even stock it yet.

*sigh*

I do hope byrc is right and that TWEWY its this kinds of games he wants to make as opposed to remakes but then again you look at all the raving FF7 fans demanding hd FF7 and how FFIV DS will probably crush The world ends with you on sales.

This is sad news, for RPG fans is not as easy as saying "ill just take my business elsewhere" unless you know fluent japanese, other companies SUCK at localizing, I mean how long do we have to wait for Tales of Innocence on DS!

Why don't you listen to byrc??!!! And read this copy pasta, the last paragraph of the article in Develop Mag:

Following the financial year results, Wada said that the company "needed to go beyond traditional Square Enix", hinting at a wider portfolio of titles to come in the future. The company already publishes several casual games in Japan developed by external parties, but so far none have been published in the West.

Soooooo, like byrc said, one would assume from this that they will be making more games, and more different games. In Japan, "mainstream" isn't the same as it is in the west, it's not bad pop shit, it's more like everything that's thought to be good, annnnddd, that's not a bad thing.

Meh, still waiting for the darker Square-Enix games like Vagrant Story to get some loving. Why can't a full blown jRPG be made with that kind of gritty feel?

Instead we'll probably see more emo spikey haired anime characters crying over their lack of enough earrings and knecklaces for their fruity colored clothing.

Rock on, Colette. I agree with you, and here's why some of the best games ever made started with a developer wanting to make something different, something he wanted to do. Shadow of the Colossus, the Mother games, and most of Miyamoto's works, to name a few.

Just figured I'd share that so you don't think everyone's against you :]

"better games for me to poop on." Classic Triumph the Comic Dog reference.. Hilarious. As long as they continue to develop new games (like that Infinite Undiscovery) for multiplatform, incl. 360, I'm happy.

Wow, how lame is this? Guess it's back to creating crappy non-numbered Final Fantasy games for them.

I loved TWEWY. The fact that Squeenix is curring any future games like it out is a load of cockadookie.

YES! Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!!! I want a return to the late 90's when a major Final Fantasy came out ever year or two (instead of every 4-6 years).

And now that profits are down, they'll be ever more desperate to do the FF7 remake. And to all you who don't want it: Great, don't play it. Many of us do want it.

um...I believe many of you like always didn't read the actual article, instead just Colette's misinformed copy-pasta, that bloggers usually do.

If you read the actual article this cutting out of games have more to do with the pet projects of many square employees, which are mostly remakes and cellphone games.

I didn't just guess this Colette. Please read the article and maybe do some research. If you actually pay attention to what Wada said you won't assume they mean original games, because in all honesty square hasn't made any original games aside from TWEWY.

Also, don't assume everyone that posts here isn't involved in the video game industry. You'd be suprise how many industry folks read this blog and many others *cough*Kotaku*cough*

Awesome, I hope Square teams up with EA on the Madden games. I could actually see myself playing them if they had a story mode with an in-depth battle system and good character development.

I can think of at least five franchises that they've killed off that I would get a second job in order to procure a special edition if they brought them back.

-Bushido Blade
-Einhander
-Tobal
-Vagrant Story
-Mischief Makers
-7th Saga

Hey look at that six.

I know this'll never happen... but a guy can wish, can't he?

That shouldn't be the attitude towards their employees.. hows threatening them to be jobless to do what they need to do when they do it...

Last time I checked ever since Hinorobu left the company has gone shithole down. Niero has a very valid point, working on their new engine is delaying the production of the game, not to mention it pulls back from their creativity to more of development. SE needs to focus on making their games more creative, and less CG.

We understand they are the king of RPG CG, but now its just hurting the business.

tl;dr = Wada said that the company "needed to go beyond traditional Square Enix", hinting at a wider portfolio of titles to come in the future.

That sounds like the opposite of what everyone is worried about here.

How does this "new" business strategy differ from their current one? All they do is remake and repackage every old FF game in existence and spoon feed it to the public.

Zing.

Maybe the masses have finally caught on?

I do think sometimes some of us, read too much into what we read, an easy mistake to make.

There's one thing all of us DS gamers should do, and that's to support The World Ends With You by purchasing a copy.

Why? Because when the sales figures come back to Square Enix, they'd hopefully see that we do want original product from them, not just the remakes they've been pimping for time. And despite their lack of advertising, it will prove that word of mouth amongst gamers still matters.

The bells are indeed aringing at Square Enix, and I believe this is going to be change for the better. They know that once those last few FF and DQ DS remakes are out, they have to focus, spread the wings to more variety, potential outsourcing to western developers and multiplatform games more.

The original product and more deserving stuff like TWEWY, has been overshadowed for too long. You really gotta step up ads, for all of your games, to the same level, Square.

If any employees were to exit Square Enix, it might not be such a bad thing, as many of them have learned from great teachers and may set up on their own. That's why Mistwalker are already doing well, and in regard to that, us rpg nuts would stand to benefit from fresh ideas.

And the rpg that excites me the most on the horizon is, Sega/Platinum Games Infinite Line rpg on DS. A totally fresh game. Looking at that game, it becomes evermore clear that Square need to stop living in the past and focus on new stuff. Whether they listen is up to them, but I know I'll be buying very little from them til they do (TWEWY being an exception).

byrc is right on the money regarding this article. Thanks for avoiding the initial 'Oh NOES!' reflex most people seem to be having and peering a little deeper into what Wada was saying. Nice work.

That said, it wouldn't hurt my feelings if some fella over at SquareEnix decided to make, oh, I dunno, a full-fledged Chrono Trigger sequel his pet-project. That'd be the bee's knees. *le sigh*

so where's the TWEWY destructoid review? You'd think a game everyone seems to like so much deserves some face time.

i hope byrc is right, in any case. Squeenix (or rather, squaresoft and enix seperately) is only a shadow of its former self. it'd be nice to see them regain some of that sense of style they used to have.

Initially I was thinking that this was going to mean no more "The World Ends with You" type games but I now that I'm listening to what other people are saying and quotes from the main article I'm actually thinking they are moving away from mobile phone games, remakes and DS non games. I think Collete should either make an edit to this blog or make another blog post because she has it all wrong and a lot of people are being misinformed.

Eh, I really have no opinion on this. If it's as Colette says, then it's just S-E being S-E and I'll continue to dislike them. If it's as byrc or whatever says, I have a glimmer of hope that maybe they'll make something interesting for once.

As it is, I don't really care either way at the moment. We'll just see what happens.

Incidentally, Wired's Chris Kohler interpreted the information the same way as Colette did. That doesn't mean they're right, but it's a fair assumption and you really can't call her crazy for it. And there are plenty of other, more valid reasons for you to call her crazy.

Uhh, I think Collete should rectify this article, considering it's pretty obvious this was a misinterpretation on her part..the article she even links to specifically states that Wada is trying to *expand* their portfolio of games and do *more* original work. His statement was that they need to stop being "the typical Square Enix", which means they need to stop being what everyone thinks S-E is; just Final Fantasy rehashes and remakes. So, he's saying he wants the company to move toward doing *more* original work, which is why in interviews lately he's been all jazzed about Infinite Undiscovery, he likes their original work.

Outside the Dragon Quest games coming to the DS and TWEWU, I don't think i'll be picking up many Squeenix games. Atlus are bringing better quality RPGs over anyway. Plus Namco is TRYING to increase it's Tales of series in America.

Fuck off Square. Okay tell your company to stop breaking out of their Final-Fantasy induced coma's and see what happens to your profits.

Sure let's keep milking the Final Fantasy name with more shitty games.

Seriously, harden the fuck up, take some chances. Your company is dying because you are holding onto a concept that died long ago. Don't believe me? Keep making your Final Fantasy games then.

I suspect that the problem isn't that the creative games are not selling, it is simply the fact that square has a huge ego and insists on overcharging for games , My mouth was agape when I found out TWEY was 40 bucks a 33% increase in price just because its made by square.

This is 50% square's fault 50% consumers fault. Not to say that "The casual gamer is taking over the market" thats not it at all. It's most gamers. If it isn't something that people know than they stay away from it with limited exceptions. Even the most "Hardcore" gamers will skip over some of the best titles because its something that wasn't advertised or hyped up. But if I remember corectly TWEWY had alot of adds. So maby it is just squeenix being crazy bastards.
