Peter Moore's week of headline-generating comments has drawn to a close, and it's ended on a bold claim indeed. The EA Sports chief has called out iTunes provider Apple and accused its service of ripping the consumer off.
Comparing EA's digitial distribution plans to Steve Job's fleecing, the former feline Microsoft man had this to say:
We need to look three years into the future and say it's going to be a completely different business, because of broadband connections. I am not going to be at the helm of a company that ends up like the music business that refused to stop trying to sell you CDs for £15 because it was a hugely profitable model. And the music consumer says, 'you know, I don't want to pay £15 for 12 tracks of which I want two, I don't want shiny discs anymore'. And so what did the industry do? It started suing its consumers for illegal downloads and, you know, Steve Jobs comes to the rescue to figure out a way to charge you 99 cents or whatever you're paying in the UK... You're being ripped off. We're not going to do that, we're going to evolve, we're going to go faster for the consumer, whatever the consumer wants.
Whatever the consumer wants, eh? Can we get a pony? I want a pony, Peter!
Personally, I believe any product with a lower case "i" in front of its name is generally an overpriced con, but EA hardly has enough integrity to go scaling its high horse so quickly. We shall see just how much value for money EA's DLC provides in the future, though.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
EA needs to tighten its DRM...no... they need to make their own console and sell games exclusively for it. At the same time they need commercials with trendy music and trendy people dancing trendy dances to said music. Moore's just jealous that people don't get EA tattoos.
Oh, and Apple might be ripping people off, but at least they allow you to sell your iPod if you don't use it anymore.
EA are the king asshats. Yes apples ipods / players are a bit overpriced, but I would argue the integration / quality deserves that price. If you dont like it, go buy an RCA lyra and we'll talk in a month when you want to throw it in the toilet next to your other nuggets o' gold.
Seems EA still his some MS going through his veins. Will he shut up for 1 week?
Please?
Seems MOORE still has some MS going through his veins...Sorry.
I WANT MY DIGITAL DOWNLOAD OF BF2 SPECIAL FORCES BACK!
they said that it's in the EULA that the download is only available for x amount of time and I cannot redownload it.
EA SUX AGAIN!
Quote from maddox. Also getting charged $.99 cents for a song is the same thing as buying a CD. 12 tracks for $12 changed nothing as far as price goes, but don't tell that to any apple lover. Yes its not that bad if you want only a few songs and don't want to buy the whole CD, but I know plenty of people who still donwnload music for free, and EA is not going to be the industry's savior in any way, shape, or form.
How about the oil companies, are they big nasties too but EA is a golden sun in the middle of all of this shady thievery? Dink.
Everyones a criminal dude...we all want more and more and more. The music industry is getting rid of reliance on physical possession of music so they can control their users...hmm that sounds awful similar to maybe EA saying they hate second hand sales and want to introduce full digital so they control ALL the money on THEIR products. Sounds EXACTLY THE SAME ya dink...
Smarten up :)
You morons. You don't even play football games. How the hell do you know if it's the same game every year. And hey, it's still FOOTBALL. What do you want them to do? Introduce new rules?
It never ceases to amaze me how people like to jump in random threads and say the SAME TIRED SHIT that others have already said a thousand times, regardless of merit.
Songs are 99 cents, but almost every album I've seen on iTunes is only 9.99. So it actually works out to be less than 99 cents per song. But don't tell that to Apple bashers who only spent about 2 minutes in the iTunes store, if that. I think 99 cents for a song is perfectly reasonable. I think 9.99 for a whole album is even better.
I'm a die hard Apple fan, but I criticize Apple all the time for making bone headed moves. The reason Apple fans get so rabid is because 95 percent of the time, the complaints made about Apple products are either flat out lies or distortions. I still hear that people don't like Macs because they "only have a one button mouse". That's been wrong for years. If someone lodges a sound and factually correct criticism of Apple or it's products, you'd be surprised how many Apple users would agree with you. I'll be one of them.
If anything, Moore should be looking at the unscrupulously inept people that work underneath his charge. When a company releases stuff so incomplete (as Madden/Head Coach) and the game testers aren't actually looking for fuck ups, but letting them through I don't see how anyone can argue EAs "pro" consumer position. The only benefit in EAs eyes are that they figure out ways to sucker people into buying their products.
With their moving to take a huge chunk of the game developers, and after take two/Rockstar is scary. I wouldn't kid anyone and say that R* hasn't had huge glitch issues with older GTA games, but ultimately they serve consumers a great deal more in the end. Imagine if R* took EAs 'just patch it later' philosophy with GTA4?
ANY game developer that has anything named "patch 2" a few days after a major titles release isn't doing their fucking jobs. Patch fucking 2, 4 days after Madden came out. It's a fucking joke. I know you English fuckers don't care...But it affects me, and it really fucking irks me.
I'm afraid to see what they do to ruin Bioware.
Each iteration of Madden is basically an update to the last game. Maybe a new feature or two, or some more polished graphics, and an updated roster. Every year I see the same reviews for a football sim, a good football sim for that matter, where they talk about new upgrades, and maybe a new function or mode of play, but it really does amount to almost the same game every year (and yes, I have played a number of iterations of Madden). You pay $60 for what basically amounts to an expansion pack.
The PS3 and XBox 360 have hard disk storage space pretty much nailed down, by the next console generation you're going to see hard disk space on par with an average gaming PC. I'm surprised EA hasn't looked into making the newest Maddens cheaper as an expansion pack than a full game. They could have it both ways. For the uninitiated, they can get a full copy of Madden, for those who've bought last years game, you could get the expansion pack for about $10-20 cheaper on disk, or an even bigger savings if it's downloaded. EA's playing the same kind of game that the music industry has been playing for decades.
The mere fact that they created a second game, and want either 30 (with the Madden CE) or 60 bucks for a franchise mode makes me fucking sick. Both Madden and HC 09 offer half of the experience I want, but each one has fatal flaws. No gameplay ing HC 09, and no depth in Madden.
We are dollar signs with feet. FUCK EA! (Do I come off as militant? I don't mean to)
@Gameboi - iTunes is a racket. They have more influence on music than any retail/wholesale company should have. When they start charging for songs based on popularity folks will revolt...I don't think anyone will enjoy paying $2.99 for Hanna Montanas "I swallowed a load (teh suck-it remix)"...
