Woo, Monthly Musings! Another opportunity for you fine readers and community members to get on the front page and, more importantly, start some interesting and intelligent discussion amongst yourselves.
This month, the topic is "Gaming's guilty pleasures," focusing on all those game or game-related experiences which we hate to love. We all have a few games which we can't help but love, regardless of their flaws: they may have a crappy storyline or repetitive, derivative gameplay, but there's just something about them that makes us think, "if loving this game is wrong...I don't want to be right."
Personally, I know I can't be the only one out there who loves Advent Rising despite its schizophrenic tone and weird character designs. Similarly, there's gotta be someone else out there who wants to have ferocious sex with Carmen Sandiego. I am not terribly proud of these things, but I admit them to be true, and I regret nothing; had I not already written about them, these are the sorts of things I might talk about for this month's Musing topic.
Hit the jump for a further explanation of the theme.
First things first: as always, make sure to put "Gaming's guilty pleasures: blah blah blah" at the top of your community blog. It just makes it easier for us to track down the Musings-related posts, which is always to your benefit.
Secondly, while this is very much a personal theme, there's no reason these articles shouldn't promote just as much discussion as the last two. If you agree with someone's guilty pleasure, then join in their dirty love for the game; if you think their fetish is unforgivable no matter what, tell them why you think so. But don't insult someone just for their views -- that's flaming, and that's stupid.
Anyway, yeah -- guilty pleasures. Talk about specific games everyone hates but you love, talk about weird opinions or loves you hold for aspects of gaming culture, or perhaps try to discuss why an entire genre might very well be a guilty pleasure (guilty pleasures don't have to be cult classics, or even poorly reviewed).
Sky's the limit on this one, so long as there's a guilty pleasure of some sort involved, connected to videogames in one way or another. As always, the blogs that contain the best writing and/or provoke the most intelligent debate will be featured on the front page.
Any questions?
My guilty pleasure is sneaking off to play Gravitation and deconstruct its themes regarding life and creativity like some liberal arts hippie while my buds play Madden all night.
Anyway, I think I might actually participate, this month.
Just kidding. I'm actually looking forward to what articles come of this. Hopefully any flaming will be kept to a minimum and we can learn something about some community members. :)
Better get started *cracks knuckles*
Anyways, I think I'll do one on Sonic Heroes/Shadow the Hedgehog. I do one on Sonic Adventure 2 but thats actually a good game.
And I prefer Godot's song...though that would fit more with DOAX, if you know what I mean.
And yes, please add tags in the (near) future <3
despite what people may or may not feel, stay true to the original intent... despite being an easy way to avoid conflict, the fact that changing what you had originally intended is encroaching on the essence of who you are is completely unacceptable.
(I also happened to buy the scissor sisters album that day too...)
Yeah, well at least I play enough Civ to feel guilty about it.
And speaking of Carmen Sandiego, I always wanted them to do "Where in Blazes is Carmen Sandiego" with a copy of Dante's Inferno packed in. That woulda been awesome.
