They stated it would have underwater portions, which leads me to believe it will be required. Also, the extra R2/L2 buttons will be nice to have.
Holmes, you love Nintendo so much you are clouding your judgment about the 3DS and it's future, this post almost seemed like a justification for Nintendo to continue screwing over their customers and less an actual news story.
I'm certainly not upset by this, (I don't have a 3DS anyway, so it doesn't make any difference to me.) but I'm wondering how you'll use the face buttons as well as both circle pads. It doesn't seem like it'd be very comfortable, like you'd have to over-extend your thumb to reach the face buttons. But even without those, you've still got two shoulder buttons, a D-Pad, and a new trigger. That just seems a little limited in the way of controls though...
So is it true that the "expansion slide pad" or whatever the crud this accessory is called includes L2, R1, and R2 buttons, giving us four shoulder buttons total? That would be enough for most simple shooter-type games, so we wouldn't need the face buttons so much.
Still doesn't seem very comfortable, but maybe I just need to see it and try it out for myself before judging.

Nubs or no nubs, I'll be getting this game regardless, and the red 3DS! It looks too sexual for any Hunter to pass up. I'm thinking it might be bundled with that cradle thing like they did with MHTri and the black Classic controller. :P
I would totally would buy the nub JUST for MHtri. I hate crab hands and honestly I don't consider it a waste. I put hundreds of hours into those games. That makes it way worth it. YES PLEASE. ALSO OMG MHTRI ON 3DS!!!!
I think an attachment that adds not only a nub but three other buttons that may be a precursor to a total redesign is a bigger deal than a monster hunter port.
I hope they include more monsters than the Brakidios or w/e they will rename this thing to. It already looks like a reskin of the barroth and Barroth was pretty easy thing to kill anyway. I wonder if this game will even compare to the inevitable Portable 3rdG. The fact it will have swimming may just limit it overall. I see dual swords in the game and it looks like they will bring back hetero elements :3

I don't think the nub will be required, in some screenshots there was a virtual dpad on the touchscreen so I'd wager that it's their for camera controls.
The monster hunter on the Vita was just Portable 3rd. They were just showing how the 2nd analog stick would move the camera.
How Capcom has no plans to release this game outside of Japan is saddening. They keep missing great opportunities to make big bucks.

Use your brains people... I played Dreamcast games with the camera controls on the d-pad (thats below the joystick) just fine ...
sure I had to stretch my right thumb to the d-pad in for better "control" but it gave me no pain ... but I played better...

Reaching over for the dpad isn't an option on a handheld so if you want to use the dpad you must use the claw. And the L and R, touch screen, and face buttons are all wonderful options, if the game isn't already using them that is. Motion control is a bad idea for the only camera control.

reaching for the d-pad part... was referring to the use on the Dreamcast ... its unlikely but doable on the 3DS since its not that wide
and the accelerometer part could be done... you could tilt the 3DS slightly like a steering wheel for left & right movement... it will ruin the 3D effect but it could work

must admit got sucked into the whole END OF NINTENDO in booming voice panic but no it's not the end 3DS is A GREAT MACHINE we just have to wait loving all the retro stuff in my pocket...cough...and monster hunter if we get it will be NUBSONIC! can't wait!
To be honest I imagine playing this without an extra control stick to be very similar to traditional PSP monster hunter games. One nub and a D-pad. Awkward sometimes but it works.
And with one game announcement, Nintendo has justified my purchase (rushed in during those few days of cheap Ambassadoriness) completely. Now all I need is a Vita with Monster Hunter 4 on it...
I'm not sure why people are having leaky assholes about the damn attachment. Were there any Wii specific games that did not support the wiimote forcing you to use any of the other multitude of controllers? No! People act like this is not what nintendo does. Super Gameboy, transfer pak on the n64, GBA cables on the GCN, wireless connector for pokemon leaf green and fire red, the list goes on and on. It is always a great addition for games that support it, but the games that support it will support default input options, that is a guarantee. Stop fucking crying about shit you don't have to buy.
My interpretation of Tsujimoto's comments to Famitsu about this was that the game is entirely playable using the touch screen instead of the nub add-on but that the add-on would make the game "more comfortable" for players.
Well, to be fair, nobody's actually released any kind of statement on the subject in English that I've seen. If you can't read Japanese, all you've got to go on so far is "Nintendo to release stupid-looking stick attachment for 3DS."

I'm taking a wild and wooly whack at this, but the nub could/will work with the game, but its not a big deal to Capcom that it does, probably because they feel they have to sell people on the game before the nub even becomes a factor.
Given that the site for the game is also Japanese, couldn't this just be Japanese sensibilities taking effect, with the nub not being mentioned? Because I sort of think (bordering on fully believing) that the nub has a major possibility of appearing all over -at least- the US based Monster Hunter site when it comes this way (and I assume it will). Since there's a definite (read: obvious) difference in the way the two countries are marketed to, and how things are received; and I sort of think this is one of those times. Capcom's Japanese wing is just playing to their audience, and their audience will really only care about Monster Hunter in any form they can get it.*
Or, maybe Nintendo's going to be pushing the nub on their own. Nintendo maybe so controlling (still) that they'll WANT to market it all themselves, and Capcom will just sit back and do small things to promote just the game along the way (God forbid they get even a little credit for Nintendo's nub, after all), at least while the nub is initially packed with the game. At the same time, yeah, it'll be packaged with Capcom's game and all, but the nub and Nintendo's 3DS problems -which began before, and seem to be furthered by the nub(at least in the west)- isn't something Capcom should have to take on themselves.
