Monster Hunter Frontier coming to Xbox 360 photo

Capcom and Microsoft had been teasing a new game in Japan, and that game has finally been revealed. Whether or not it's "new" is up for debate, however. Monster Hunter Frontier Online is a PC version of the hugely successful animal-cruelty franchise, and it's coming to the Xbox 360.

Frontier will mark the first time a Monster Hunter game has appeared on the Xbox 360. Strange that it's taken so long, but there you are. So far, Frontier Online is confirmed for Japan only, with Capcom remaining tight-lipped about a Western version. Hopefully it'll come to the land of we round-eyed devils as well.

I doubt Frontier Online will encourage Japanese players to get more excited about the 360 than they have been, but if any franchise has a chance to sell more boxes, it'll be this one.

It might depend on Monster Hunter 3 (Tri)'s sales when it comes out in Europe. If it manages to go very well then hopefully Capcom can respond and give us this game fans have been waiting for quite some time (especially over US/EU since the last online Monster Hunter was the first game in the series)

So....Capcom cancels Monster Hunter on the Playstation 3 and switches development to the Wii. Then, to add insult to injury, they make what appears to be an Xbox 360 only Monster Hunter title....

Fuck. You. Capcom.

Can a guy get proper Monster Hunter title this generation on a Sony console that ISNT a PSP? I mean...damn..wtf...*grumble grumble*

Oh for fuck's sake. As a big Monster Hunter fan, a supporter of both MH in the west and a supporter of Sony's PSP and PS3 i will be fucking pissed off if this doesn't come to PS3 too.

Fucking pissed off.

I mean, in Japan it's all about the PS3 and it's all about MH, why the fuck would you put out an undoubtedly popular game on an unpopular console????

Surely the popular-in-Japan MH series would benefit greatly from a game on the popular-in-japan console, the PS3? Right?

Re-considering my monster Hunter Tri purchase now.

@Turtlehermit - MH games are fucking epic.

It's like a fighting game crossed with an RPG crossed with a hunting/stalking game.

To the naked eye a gameplay vid looks like a little person bashing a big monster over and over, but when actually playing it you find that tactic will get you killed by the very first monster very quickly.

It takes fighting strategy, equipment strategy, item use strategy, preperation and downright learned-by-experience skillz.

If you have access to a PSP grab one of the old one's cheap and you'll see what i mean.

I'm at 1000+ hours across the last 3 PSP games. Never have I played such a timesink of a game series.

Heh, I was just looking at Tri last night and getting excited about it.

I wonder when/if this will come out in the West, and whether or not it will be free to play like Tri reportedly will be...if not, that's kind of a dealbreaker for me.

@ Aurvantoid: It's not a 360 only title, it's a 3 year old PC game that was never released outside of Japan.

Well, the 360 is basically a computer of sort, and a lot of PC games exclusive or otherwise have made it's way to the 360. It's kind of understandable, sort of. But I still can't figure out why they would release a 360 version ONLY for Japan. Hopefully they will gauge the popularity of the game and release a Western version.

Also, kind of hypocritical of you guys to hate Monster Hunter Frontier for the 360 even though the past Monster Hunter series have been featured on Sony consoles.

While I'm somewhat disappointed for the lack of PS3 love from this franchise, (at least so far) I got to say that for what I've seen of this game (given, never played it) the PSP Monster Hunter games are pretty much on par with Frontier. And ok, it has online and all that, but playing with actual people is where the fun is at, even though the singleplayer by itself is quite fun.

@ Turtlehermit
Yes, this games are a ton of fun if you can grasp the controls. Some people just stop playing after a couple of minutes because it is "to hard", but I have been playing since the first Monster Hunter Freedom on the PSP and it must be one of the games I have more hours of play. If you have a PSP, or a Wii, I say give it a shot, even if it means playing alone (thats the way I play most of the times anyway).

And six months later, the PS3 version will come out with many more quests and a bunch of other shit with a letter to Microsoft, 'Dear Microsoft, thanks for financing our PS3 game." Isn't that how all Japanese exclusives have been going in this field?

I hope Capcom ditches it's UR3 engine soon, or maybe I'm the only one who can't stand it. Capcom's graphics team has barely got a handle on the engine since they started using it, with little to no improvement since day one. Resident Evil is a good example of poor development skill in this area requiring lower resolution screens to keep the game at an acceptable frame rate.

Hope they improve before they unleash this beast.

Relax, coming to the 360 and exclusive too the 360 are two entirely different things.

The ps3 version will probably be annouced soon, you know considering the 360 is at the bottom of the sales barrel as far as japan is concerned.

why is everyone crying? You can play monster hunter on like 5 platforms. Why are you just waiting for it to come to a platform that you shouldn't expect it to come to? Get either a wii, psp, ps2, 360, or use your pc. It's not a big deal people.

The monster hunter audience is on the PSP though, playing the game on the go. Sales of Monster Hunter Tri weren't exactly good in Japan.

Interesting move, Capcom.

I can understand this though, and I do think we'll get it in the west. Monster Hunter had a brief incursion on PS2 in the west, but that was way before the online likes of Live was around. I can see this going down well on Live, with voice chat and headsets as standard, just like how Left 4 Dead did.

Actually, that probably exactly why Capcom did this. Left 4 Dead relies heavily on its co-op design and working as a team. Left 4 Dead even went down well in Japan on 360. Monster Hunter works on the same co-op principle, and is successful in japan on PSP, because they have better ad hoc/wi-fi infrastucture, to play such a game. Xbox Live is the next best thing to that, and the development should be easy and potentially cheaper too, as Capcom know the 360 well enough now.

Don't cryin and a bitchin, Sony fans. Monster Hunter has been on PS2 and PSP for years now. While I know you'd like a PS3 version, that would be more costly. I expect if this 360 version goes down as well as the Wii/PSP versions, Capcom may look at a PS3 version later on. If not, 360's are cheap enough now, go and bag one.

Monster Hunter Freedom I got for my PSP ages ago, and its a cool game, but I'm sure is much more fun in co-op. Due to the low ad-hoc stuff outside of japan, and no headset, I never tried into online on PSP.

Now, if Capcom could redesign Resident Evil Outbreak, to work the same way on Xbox Live, with sweet online play, I'd be a happier Capcom fan.

I really don't get why it's a X360 exclusive, i mean the rest of the world i could deal with, but IN JAPAN!?!?! even a multiplatform X360/PS3 would have made more sense specially considering the news that the X360 is being bought at 500 yen on pawn shops over there.

@Tomasz:
If you compare it to the PSP sales: Tri sold ONE million. Freedom Unite sold 3.7 million in Japan. Also both Super Mario Galaxy and NSMBW sold more than Tri in Japan, so your argument of Tri being the second most successful game on a home console is wrong.

Why is it strange it hasn't come to 360 yet? They were obviously waiting for Microsoft to sell their 10th Japanese system before doing all the work of porting a heavily Japan-centric title to the system.

This isn't that big of a deal. Its Japan only right now. It will hardly move Xbox units as its already on the PC. What it should do is get those who have a 360 but no computer (this is Japan, they have computers and BADASS connection speeds) to buy the game.

There was also a shot of Monster Hunter 4 for the PS3 off 2chan. Anyone confirm this yet or is everyone too busy still sucking off the 360?

Thing is people, that MS no longer need to be No.1 in japan like before, as Japan isn't as important. MS will still have a presence in Japan, but IMO, no longer expect they'll win there, however, its good to have a presence there again, all the same. 360 uptake might not be as hot as elsewhere in the world, but at least some japanese gamers are trying it and its games out, for a different experience.

The best thing that will come of this, is japanese gamers will hopefully come out of their shell and use voice chat to help their MH play.

I was disappointed with Monster Hunter on the PSP. I loved the game but couldn't understand what the online system was about. The PSP has online functionality so why did I need to buy a PS3 to go online? I know I can use to workaround but it's a lot of hassle and my router doesn't support it so I would have to go and buy a specific one just for that.

I hope Tri sells a shit ton over here because I want to play in a team so badly. It gets lonely out here :( Also, portable systems blow. When you're out, why aren't you out? The outside world is a marvel to behold, with so much going on. Maybe if your journey to work/school consists of a 6 hour train journey it would be understandable. The adults get it too. You never see them playing their DSes out over here, they play them at home. It's a real shame there are some great games on portables.

More accurately, Nintendo "stole" Sony's exclusive. Microsoft is "stealing" a PC exclusive.

In reality, no one is stealing anything: Capcom is exercising its independent business judgment.

Well son of a bitch. I guess I'll have a reason to get a 360 now. I've been wanting to play Frontier for a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time now. It's basically the culmination of the Monster Hunter series (up until 3, that is) stirred together and then with its own unique ingredients poured in for this game.

There is much more customization with weapons and armor as well. You can lengthen or shorten your weapons' reach to either improve their range or boost their attack power. There's new and unique monsters, with names I can't quite remember, on top of all the monsters from the prior games, console and for the PSP. Including thorn wyvern Espinas. Holy crap, you can wail on the thing for like a minute with your weapons before it actually considers you more than just a nuisance and decides it'd be nice if you just go away and die.

This coming out for the 360 is a good sign, though. Capcom is hellbent on making this game successful outside of Japan, so it being for the 360 very likely means it will be released outside of Japan, one way or another.

And the next time someone reports this game, they should use a picture of a Rajang for the header image.
