I love Halo. I love the Halo series. I'm proud to admit that. In fact, Halo means more to me than any other current video game series. I've outgrown Mario and some others, and Halo has stepped right up and replaced all that. What's awesome, is that I'm not the only one that adores this virtual tale -- the guys at 1UP also show some hardcore love. Mark from GameVideos and Luke from 1UP give a brilliant director's-commentary like breakdown of the entire 60 seconds of glory in this video, and I think you'll enjoy it. Maybe you'll even learn a little something.
I fail to see everyone's "man crush" with halo, and frankly it is rather annoying. It is not anywhere near the greatest game series, or even FPS series if you ask me. I think a majority of the people who like Halo have never played any other type of FPS game, or enjoy it as a result of the mass hype it receives, I can't really put my finger on it...
I fail to see why everyone feels the need to point out that Halo isn't the best FPS out there. I happen to think that Unreal Tournament sucks, but I don't feel a need to share that opinion with everyone whenever I read something about it. Everyone has different opinions about games, and I'm sorry that you happen to dislike the most popular FPS franchise out there, but we don't need to hear you bitch about it all the time. Just let us enjoy our Halo and we'll be happy to let you enjoy your HL2. Can't we all just get along?
Reading these comments made me smile. It's good to know that there are a good number of other people that feel the same way about Halo that I do. I never quite understood the whole "ZOMFG HALO IS SO AMAZING" trend, I mean, before Halo even came out I played so many other FPS's on PC that felt like it if not better. It's really that innovative or different than any other FPS that's out today, especially on console.. All in all, I'd gladly take Gears over Halo ANYDAY, hell, I'd take Quake II over Halo anyday..
Just to be fair before i "bash" Halo i'll say i'm not really a fan of FPS so you can pretty much dismiss everything i say offhand. I don't hate halo. I just don't like it. I'm not a FPS player. I don't understand what makes halo better then any other big brand FPS. I've played halo and halo 2. Hell i'm even really good at halo 2 (i say this after slaughtering my friends in it over and over again. their game they play it all the time.) I just don't see anything awe inspiring about it. I don't love FPS's, I'm really bad at them, but a great game is a great game, hence I owned GoldenEye (wicked game) and HL:2 (seriously immersive) Gears (a real evolution to the shooter genre and yes, I know it's third person), but Halo, aprt from in co-op just didn't float my boat, although I have to admit I've only played the second installment and not the first.
Halo: Good but not great and I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who feels this way.
Halo has a decent SP for a console shooter. Multiplayer feels like watered down UT2004 to me.

comparing halo to ut2004 is strange, considering one's a twitch shooter and one's a relatively slow paced tactics heavy shooter. maybe the slower pace is why it feels watered down.
as for growing out of mario, i don't see how that is possible. i missed mario last gen and that's part of the reason i want a wii, to suplement my 360 and catch up on some of the nintendo goodness i missed out on. i'm still not completely sold on the motion controls but i had a big smile on my face as i played a demo at eb, realizing the potential that they had.
Call me crazy, but none of the things you mentioned appeal to me in any way. That just sounds like way too many maps, I'm happy to supply my own music to my gaming experience, and multiple character models hardly makes or breaks a game. As for gameplay types, I'm pretty sure Halo has got that covered, but all I need is Team Slayer/Deathmatch and I'm happy. UT2004 could have 500 maps and hundreds of "lengthy" songs and I still wouldn't play it because I don't like the gameplay, and the same is true for you with Halo. I just don't understand why anyone thinks there is some point to arguing about this, because everyone clearly has (gasp!) different opinions...
@ Aeon: Half Life 2, Quake 1, Quake 2, Quake 3, Quake 4, Unreal Tournament, UT 2003, UT 2004, Half Life 1, Call of Duty 1, 2 and 3, Gears of War, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and that's just off the top of my head. Granted, I'm talking about at the time these games were released, but Halo did NOT revolutionize much of anything compared most of these games. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark and Gears of War added so much more to the FPS genre, especially considering the console aspect. Quake is a landmark series and so was Unreal Tournament. I will admit that PC games have a HUGE advantage over the console genre, and that is the mod community. These can multiply a game's length by 20 times if you find the right modifications and user created content. The free expansion that Unreal Tournament 2004 recieved radically changed the gameplay and that's something you're not likely to find on console games.
I can really go into more depth, but I'd like to point out that I've been playing a lot of FPS games for over 12 years so Halo will seem like a one trick pony to me no matter what way you try to defend it. And yes, I did play it for 10 hours. I was determined to find out what made it so popular, but there never seemed to be much there in the first place.

1. i've played ut2004. it was an awesome game, though i'm not a pc gamer, and just played it at a friend's house and once at a gaming cafe in memphis. i own unreal championship and uc 2 for xbox. i plan on purchasing ut 2007 for 360 when it comes out.

I love Halo but wasn't to fond of Halo 2 it just feels like there is a bunch of stuff missing...... like its not all there and needs more something but cant figure it out. I say Halo was better then halo 2....... but cant wait for halo 3
