Molyneux thinks LittleBigPlanet is lovely, rates it most creative game of 2008 photo

Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux may be all about the Xbox 360, but he's not above praising PS3 exclusives, happy to admit that Media Molecule's LittleBigPlanet was the most creative endeavor of last year.

The Fable creator was speaking at this year's Creative and Business International Network review of the creative economy, where he highlighted that LBP's release was the most important creative innovation of 2008.

"LittleBigPlanet has outstanding creative vision. It’s from a British start-up studio and is one of the defining titles on Japan’s Sony PS3," stated the outspoken designer.

That's nice for LittleBigPlanet, and with all the love that's clearly gone into the game, it's good that other developers would notice and give it due respect. Personally I think the inclusion of Stephen Fry as narrator was its most important innovation, however.

That picture is horrifying.

I will dream of that face being mere inches from my own face, screaming "INNOVATION"

*shudder*

For some reason, I tend to take developers more seriously when they can praise other peoples games. Because really, if all you care about is your own game... chances are they suck. I'm of the belief that good games, are made by people who enjoy playing games. I may a be a bit naive there, but it makes sense to me. No real way to prove if its true or not, but I like to think it is.

@John, LBP is perfect as the 2.5D thing it is. I think a full 3D world would just not have the same charm and simplicity as it does now.

Also what? "Japan's Sony PS3".

Has anyone heard Stephen Fry's "erect" joke in one of the tutorials... Made me chuckle. The man's a legend.

I love LBP.

Normally I cant stand when this man speaks but its good to see him putting praise where it should be. LBP is great, and as for a sequel, I dunno if we will get one at leaast not anytime soon. I think the way to go for LBP right now is making DLC.

Was LBP really all that creative though? It's a great tool for others to use to express their creativity, but on-disk game is pretty lacking in terms of the things that usually help a platformer form it's own identity (enemy design, power ups, bosses, etc.)

Stephen Fry ftw. I don't have nor will I ever have a PS3, but this game is one of the few things which makes me wish I did have one.

maybe the creativity was that instead of making, just a game. They managed to break free from the 'game' mould and pushed it into creative toy. shit, it worked for lego and meccano

@Jonathan,

I think the actual game is pretty much secondary. I'm not even sure it was totally needed for the disc to be great.

I've played some creations that really made my jaw drop and they just keep getting better. I do agree, however, that the enemies are one thing that could be improved. I'd like to see some evil sackboys running at me!

Fun fact: Media Molecule was created by people who left Lionhead after the Microsoft takeover.

@JH:

I dunno, the game itself is unlike anything else I've ever seen or played. But I don't see how the game could not be described as creative, it's easily one of the most original titles we've seen over the last decade in my eyes.

But then we had this debate last time, when you reviewed the game - I wasn't happy with you assertion that the offline game matters as much as the online component. As Clance said, the offline game (which I thought was better than everyone else seemed to think, especially towards the end) is somewhat secondary to the online aspects.

@CALkulon- Remember though that about half of PS3 owners don't have thier consoles online. For those people, the offline mode is everything.

If the game was only sold online, guaranteeing that no "offline only" people could even buy it, I wouldn't have felt the need to be so protective.

I would love the game more if the online ever worked. Every time I've tried to join a friend it ends up lagging out and disconnecting.

More fun fact:

Aaron Greenberg, Microsoft's Group Product Manager for Xbox 360 said in a CES 09 interview by Eurogamer:

"Sony very nicely sent me a copy, and I haven't played it yet. It's on my list. It was one of those holidays where there were just so many games to play in such a short period of time, and I'm still catching up now. LittleBigPlanet is definitely one of the games on the top of my list, I look forward to checking it out."

As much as I love LBP, it's got crazy lag issues sometimes.

Fun fact 3: Masterbating with a belt around your neck could get you killed.

Jk - but in all seriousness, :), I think LBP is like mario without a real challenge. I can play a few levels then go back to shooting people in the face games. At 26 I need more action. Gears 1 ftw!

Peter and lionhead studios are personally thanked in the games credits in the back of the manual. they had to have some kind of support.

i guess i'm the only one who actually reads the credits, looking for people i may have heard of.

GooN, they have thousands of community levels that offer "real" challenges and if that don't give you a boner, go and get the gold medal for not dying once in a level like i did, that shit was fucking hard (like a boner hard) and a real challenge for gamers like me.

@JH:

Yeah, you said that last time too :-P

To be honest I don't care much for that argument though, people should know what they're buying. And LBP shouldn't really be bought by people who aren't online. As I said at the time, Gears of War is in a similar position and nobody cried foul then.

I love the premise of LBP (the creativity side), but is it essentially a platform game with physics? If so, I don't think it will appeal to me. I have this problem with jumping games whereby I just want to run, jump, and get it over with as soon as possible, which results in many deaths and a switch off. I've not finished a platform game since Mega-man 3, and I've never enjoyed them since, though I do occassionally help my daughter get past a 'hard bit' on Mario DS, but that's about as much as I can stand.
