Molyneux suggests Fable II could become a full download on the Xbox 360 photo

Peter Molyneux, Lionhead head honcho, recently told gamesindustry.biz that Fable II could possibly become a digital download on the Xbox 360. He said that it would be “a great thing for [Lionhead] to work on,” but refused to toss out any specifics as to how it could go down. When pressured for more information, he said if he talked about it more he “would be killed to death.”

If Fable II were released digitally before the Xbox 720, it would be the first full Xbox 360 game offered on Xbox Live Marketplace. Currently Microsoft only offers original Xbox titles on the Xbox Originals tab for download. Molyneux said that the original Fable, which is one of the four titles being offered on the Xbox Originals service, has performed “really, really well” and cited that it “was one of the highest selling, if not the highest selling [titles].”

Molyneux is somewhat notorious for letting the cat out of the bag, but this is a pretty big cat. If Microsoft begins to offer full, current games, it will take one of the few advantages that Sony’s PSN has over Xbox Live. In many ways, full downloads seem like a natural progression for the Marketplace. We’ll have to wait and see how this unfolds.

I'm still old-fashioned enough that I like actually having a disc in my hands. Having shelves full of old games is a lot more interesting to look at than a console full of games that you can't really see.

I don't see why Microsoft doesn't start offering full 360 games through digital distribution on the marketplace. If they did (and 120GB hard drives weren't ridiculously overpriced), I would certainly buy all my games that way, except for when I find cheaper prices & bargains at retail (and by retail I mean Amazon).

Maybe he should worry about the patch for Fable 2 before thinking about digitally releasing it.

Also, killed to death = new Internet catch phrase.

Though, I have to say a school friend of mine use to say this all the time. He was a little strange and would ask "what would you do if I killed you...to death?" totally forgot about that until I read PM's quote.

I don't see why that would even be a big deal, really. By the time this happened, anyone who wanted Fable 2 would have already bought it.

I am excited to see companies try to force digital downloads down the throats of an uninterested global community, though. We are years and years away from replacing physical media.

Molyneux suggests a lot of stuff. I don't believe him anymore.

it's funny, last night fable2 won goty on g4 and they interviewed him and he talked about dlc and such, but no word on patches. i think if a game wins goty it shouldn't need a fix patch.
mgs4 won a few good ones and it didn't need any fix patch for the main game.

Patch is in certification, according to the lionhead website.

And, I've managed to enjoy the game without coming across the single player bugs. I don't think I ever would have bothered to give my wife a ring, even if I didn't know about that bug . . .

I'd be interested in lots more content by download ( can I get a full year of DLC episodes?!) than purchasing the game for full Run-from-HD convenience.

If Microsoft can do this successfully, it could change the industry. They'd better introduce some fucking huge hard drives, though.

I would gladly pay full retail price for the convience of not leaving home to Download new titles. Of course they would have to work out a system like Nintendo where you can redownload any time for free once you've payed for it, that way you can clean up space on your hard drive for new games.

I'd also probably impulse buy 5 times as many games. How many times do you see people on your friends list playing games you don't have and you'd like to join them but its late at night and you can't be bothered to spend an hour going to a 24 hour videogame store.

Four titles offered on the service? Do explain, I see a fair bit more than that. Even if you're only referring to ones worth owning, I'd say that's more than four as well.

I only want this if I can use the 360 to burn the download to a DVD... which will never happen.

The reason why developers and publishers will push for digital distribution is because they'll make more money since there is no retailer, packaging and transportation involved and people can't trade in downloaded games or buy them used.

Sony has already done this with Burnout Paradise and Warhawk, plus splitting up Siren: Blood Curse into 12 individual episodes and releasing them all. (I'm sure I'm missing some other PS3 games too.) It's entirely possible for Microsoft to do this, but their incentive is much lower when the majority of their audience has 20GB hard drives and would have to upgrade to a larger hard drive, a feat which is more complicated and pricey than simply swapping any laptop hard drive into a PS3.

Microsoft should then use notebook HDDs or SATA HDDs so we can acquire cheap 500 GB Hard drives to use with our Xbox 360s.

Thank you for reminding me that there is one segment of the population who will love these types of innovations- agoraphobics!

I'd rather not have to buy another hard drive. I'll stick to discs, thanks.

MS needs to address the storage problem first. That was pretty shortsighted if them to include such dinky HDDs if they wanted digital distribution to catch on.
