Molyneux says Fable III to feature an in-game store photo

Dropping real coinage on fantasy swords may be just as easy as purchasing a Rock Band 2 DLC song in the future -- that is, if Peter Molyneux’s plans come to fruition.

Earlier this evening during his BAFTA lecture, the Lionhead Studios head honcho announced plans to incorporate an in-game store in Fable III. He ideated that it would be used for purchasing simple items like weapons, DLC on the scale of Fable II’s Knothole Island expansion, and even FAQs.

Fine. We see where Molyneux is going with this -- the Xbox LIVE Marketplace tab is a beautiful reminder that we are, indeed, playing a videogame. But this seems more like cold, hard business than it is a helpful, or a fruitful and innovative thing. We’ll have to see.

"Let us see how much money we can squeeze out of consumers that are used to paying full price for a game, and then CHARGE THEM MORE FOR OTHER STUFF"
Ugh.

He did say we would be able to do anything in Fable III.

Fuck Micro-transactions. Fuck 'em long, and fuck 'em hard.

But seriously, fuck micro-transactions.

In-game access to DLC would be spffy...

Its strange now that Molynuex is Microsoft Exec. They're letting him run wild with profit ideas, which I guess keep shim tight lipped on actual game hype.

I think I liked it better the other way around.

Please don't screw up Fable 3 with poorly integrated Natal controls or rape-like micro-transactions.

Sorry, that may (arguably) have been uncalled for.

Microtransations + RPG = Sale -1

I will not buy any RPG on any platform that deals in microtransactions if all the microtransactions are is intentionally-witheld content.

Stuff like expansions for Fallout 3 and songs for Rock Band are a different beast, they were meant to be expanded over time. Mickel-and-diming out content that already should be in the game for a fee is a disgusting practice.

I always wanted to try a Fable game, but not now.

Fable and Fable 2 were quite sparse in items compared to the average RPG. I like how it takes the prospect of micro transactions for them to rethink that.

He better be careful because this is sounding like selling people half a game for $60 and then offering the rest in $1 - $10 installments. Considering the overpriced Fable 2 episodic release I don't think I'm being too conspiracy theorist.

This isn't a terrible idea, I guess. I mean, the microtransactions will exist either way. This just gives us an easy way to get to them. I still haven't decided if it is takes the player out of the game more or less though. On the one hand, it isn't bringing up the XBL Marketplace, so you never "leave" the game, but on the other, the game itself is asking for real money, where I think I'd personally rather compartmentalize spending real money through the Dashboard and fake money in games.

ah man. i was waiting for that feature to push me over the edge and buy a 360. well i'll be damned.

why would someone even mention this? its not a selling point or a feature. its a fuckin distraction and a slap to face if anything, like we don't know there is a store/marketplace and can only remember to buy horse armor when its slapped in our faces every 5 minutes in game.

microsoft has made these companies resort to this type shit because being exclusive to microsoft is being owned by microsoft.

birds of a feather flock together.

Well, lets hope this isn't 'buy a hat' or 'buy the end game swords at lv1' type microtransactions. Count me out if it is.

Frankly the Natal stuff is the opposite of a draw for me. I like the idea of it as technology, but have no interest in owning it myself at this point.

I cant believe that more and more games are pushing these ridiculous microtransactions and DLC. Can't we just have games that, once made, are made completely? Seriously, I find it much more gratifying to find an epic sword and have it be the product of much hard work rather than to buy one. DLC is actually okay, if it is an actual large contribution to the game implemented after the game has been released for a while. Microtransactions, however, have no excuse.

Like Dexter345 said, microtransactions would be there anyway, how on earth can anyone complain about being told about them?!?!
And as far your comment goes Silent Protagonist... wtf!? Who the hell convinced you you had the right to decide what was deemed yours and free to begin with, and what was going to be drip-fed to you via your wallet over time?!

Even forgoing that kind of member-of-the-board kind of power, what on earth makes you think you can tell the difference anyway?!?! It's incredible, but really, do you think ALL DLC that's ready before the game ships should be free?! Really?! How dellusional are you?!
All these self-righteous people on here that DESERVE this and are OWED that. It's pathetic. We're talking about a business model. They make it. If you like what you see you buy it. End of.

@Tarvu - are you completely out of whack? Where the frig did you pick up the hairbrain idea that Molyneux's lying about anything?!
I swear, some of you just get off on dissing someone who's often held in high regard. You're like a freakin playground bully. Grow up.
