Molyneux names his top five most revolutionary games photo

Peter Molyneux may be a hype producing blow hard all the time sometimes, but the games he and Lionhead Studios have put out over the years are nothing if they aren't innovative. While they may not live up to his very own hype, they do often feature aspects that are new and fresh. Where does Molynuex get his inspiration, though? What games does he respect as the one's that truly changed the game?

At BAFTA’s Annual Video Games Lecture last night, Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux revealed what he thinks are the five most revolutionary games of the last 20 years. That time frame excludes most of the 8-bit era so we're pretty much eliminating most of Nintendo's and Sega's classics and jumping straight into the modern era of gaming. What were his top five then?

Dune 2, Super Mario 64, Tomb Raider, Halo and World of Warcraft.

Any of his choices surprise anyone? I did not expect to see Tomb Raider on there, but he gives a pretty convincing argument for it, saying that Eidos subverted the tradition of muscled men being heroes, and created a unique character that confronted many stereotypes held in gaming. The other games are pretty obvious choices all around (he gives props to Mario 64 for influencing GTA), but if you want to understand his full reasoning behind selecting each game you can read a full report of the talk here

I cannot understand why everyone chuckles when halo is said to be one of the most revolutionary games.

It was, and I will argue it to anyone. It popularized and mainstreamed FPS-centered gaming and it basically made way for the innovation and development of the fantastic shooters we're getting today.

There is very little from GoldenEye that had a direct impact on shooters today. Halo was a lot more substantial; it introduced dual-stick shooters on consoles.

Too bad TimeSplitters on the PS2 came out almost a full year before Halo and it had dual stick control.

From the ThatVideoGameBlog: "The list was rounded out by World of Warcraft. Molyneux looked to WoW’s “carrot dangling” mechanic as its most innovative feature. Reflecting on his time with the game, he remembered how the promise of a steed drove him on to play up to level 40. This was in direct opposition to traditional videogame design which dictated that the player should have access to everything the game had to offer almost immediately, in case they became bored."

So.. I guess WoW just happened to be his first MMO then? Because it certainly wasn't the first one to do any of that.

Halo is revolutionary because it was the first online console fps, unless I'm forgetting something.

I'm glad you're on the ball Toneman, I just created an account to tell Mudkip the same thing, but you beat me to the punch ^.^
I'd say WoW was chosen rather than any of the other MMO's due to how it's design takes all of the ideas from other MMO's and put them together in a way that was accessable to people who had never played them before..

explaining why he chose these games might have made it a bit easier to understand. Alot of people would and have cited Metroid (at least on Kotaku) instead of tomb raider for "challenging the notion that a hero had to be a massively-muscled man."

I disagree since the only people who knew that Samus was a female were the ones that beat the game/Justin Bailey'd it. Lara presented femininity to characters from the get go in a very public campaign. Some might argue whether it was too much, but its still the first game I can really remember that did that.

The arguments against halo is just fanboyism. Halo was a decent game. Yes there were and are better FPSs, but the control in Halo was near perfect for a console and really ushered in a million and one copy cats in the same way Mario did with platformers. I didn't pay attention to FPS's before Halo and now I do. Too bad halo 2 killed the franchise for me.

@Alastor
I'm not sure if I would cite that Goldeneye would be the best representation of how a console FPS should be made. It was an excellent game, but it really didn't bring itself up to the level of control that PC gamers had with their games. Halo simplified itself in such a way that it made it accessible to console gamers with good enough control to keep most gamers happy.

I'd disagree with molyneux that WoW is the most revolutionary MMO, but I don't play MMOs so I can't really vouch for it. I still would have thought that Everquest or any other precursor would have gotten a nod especially since he's an old PC guy, but to each their own.

Halo practically introduced complex terrain to the FPS genre. What do I mean? Every other FPS had you walking on a plane with no humps or curves or what-say-you in them. Halo added different areas, even if it was as simple as going up hills and stuff.

Wow this guy has like opened himself to be the biggest idiot to ever clame to know things about video games.

he clames halo was great because it " for bringing FPS’ to consoles, introducing regenerative health and solving the tricky issue of multiple weapon swapping by limiting the player to 2 guns at a time."

while some out there call those enhancements they really are cheep mods that could and be put into any FPS ever made, if you want an FPS that pushed the envolope look no farther than QUAKE

1st major online FPS
1st FPS that was compatible online with PC/MAC/sega dreamcast
1st sort of 3d FPS

I mean yeah halo did do somthing great, but it was not the controls it was the LAN ability, Hell halo would suck @$$ without multiplayer by far worse than HL in everyway.

you can also creadit halo with copying Perfect Dark's multiplayer options too...

and WOW lol... shure it is the biggest MMO , but it was not the ground breaking MMO.

I would have to credit PSO or Diablo for being the MMO.

PSO brougt MMOs to the xbox ps2 GC and sega dreamcast

Diablo has set the standard for all MMOs on PC, and no game has really done ANYTHING to change the ORGINAL formula.

yeah know that I remeber that this guy made Fable I can only saw that he is a crap talking dumb ass that realy likes to think he knows aton about video games when he has faild to do what he said he was going to do with the first fable.

um twisted metal came out before mario 64. he does say first game you could freely move around in. you could do that in twisted metal but youre just in a car.

there were plenty of (better)FPS console games LONG before halo.

tomb raider? theres been plenty of femal stars in games beforehand. but she was the most popular because of how she looked ,i guess you could say.

but anyway, still cool to see what influences people to do what they do.

Ughh I'm sick of trying to defend Halo to people, but here I go:

Halo wasn't the first FPS ever. It wasn't the first console FPS. It wasn't the best console FPS. It was just the first console to do everything right, and get major recognition for it. You can argue about the "better" (ZOMG A SUBJECTIVE WORD) FPS games all you want, but Halo was a HIT that hit hard.

I've never understood why nobody on the internet wants to let anyone else have an opinion. There's no sense calling him out on how he "should've picked _____". Not to mention, revolutionary doesn't mean the first to do something or the best attempt at something, but the thing that makes the most radical change. You ask anyone if they've heard of Mario or Halo and they'll say yeah. You ask anyone if they've heard of Twisted Metal or Quake and they probably won't know what you're talking about. REVOLUTION!!!

This has turned into a Halo hating/loving thread!
Here's my take: I have hated Halo ever since it showed up on the scene, only FINALLY breaking into the series with ODST. After playing through the first three game just to figure out the plot, I have to say this game had a substantial influence on console FPS.
It certainly wasn't the first, or the best, by it had stuff that is now standard that it invented.
Like, using grenades on their own button instead of switching to the weapon. And the rebounding health bar being so prominent. And the limiting of weapon #s. And enemy/alien weapons vs human weapons.
Overall, it wasn't anything astounding by today's standards, but you can see how its influence has changed FPSs, especially on consoles, significantly.
Still think the plot is dull and Master Chief is a douche, but certainly a significant game.

Halo wasn't the first game with a lot of it's features, but how many shooters borrowed ideas from it after it came out?

You can throw around "TimeSplitters" and "Red Faction" all you want, but the fact of the matter is that neither of those games had shit borrowed from them like Halo had shit borrowed from it.

"Oh, but X game did this years before Halo!"

Yeah, too bad Halo was the one that got it right and opened the door for a lot of people to jump into FPS games. I loved 007 as much as the next guy, but it was nowhere near accessible as the first Halo. Sorry, you might call me a fanboy, or a fag or whatever, but it's the truth. Halo gets a lot of recognition for a reason. A lot of games use things that Halo had in it years ago.

My final point: The console FPS landscape wasn't very full before Halo, but how many shooters have we seen after Halo came out? Way too many to count. Maybe it wasn't all Halo, but after it's release I don't see how publishers could say no to releasing their own Halo after seeing how well Halo sold. Not to mention the term "Halo-killer" has been thrown around so much it's ridiculous.

Again, you may not see why Halo is so special, but to say it isn't revolutionary is borderline being a fanboy or just ignorant. Sorry, but that's how I see it.

Interesting list. I agree with mario or even Zelda: oot as showing the way to how a 3d game can be made, and work well. Never played WOW, so I cannot comment on that. I see where he was going with Dune2. Tome Raider? He left out GTA3 and included TOMB RAIDER! Just weird. I thought Mario 64 covered the 3d climbing adventure thing. Mario is not exactly a typical muscle man. GTA 3 created the sandbox genre (at least the well done sandbox genre). He left out Metal Gear Solid. That game redefined storytelling in action games while perfectly merging action and stealth. And I understand Halo. After Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, I lost interest in console fps. Just the way the AI felt when you ramped up the difficulty. It felt like the units were devising a plan against you. The AI in other console fps felt either cheap, or dumb. The lack of load times when you obtained a vehicle. And the added feel of exploration drew me back in with the fine tuned controls.

So many people here calling halo a revoulutionary game.
LoL

1.Halo is like FF7 with the main difference is that FPSs where already popural
before Halo.RPGs where not and FF7 did maek RPGs a stable part of our
gaming calture.Halo on the other hand just completly skyrocketed FPSs.
Bad thing that happened at a time where FPSs where already a stable of
the gaming world.

2.Sure Halo had many great fetures like health regenaration and holding 2 weapons (ok not so great) but lets see how many games had Health regenaration after Halo.A lot.How many games did have ''can only hold 2 weapons''
A lot.So its a game that basecly spawned a shit load of gameclones.
ITs the same with FF7.Sure FF7 Made RPGs a part of the gaming world
but it sunk down its own series.Everygame FF game after that was
full of soap opera Dialog and Emo Punktards with huge hair and swords the size
of Semi trucks.Halo basecly jsut made a lot of FPS games that had A huge Bulky
soldier with health regenaration and only 2 cases for weapons fighting aliens
humans or something else. Not to say that every FPS game was like that.
Several awesome FPSs came that were really good (half life 2).

Not to say that Halo is a bad game.It was really good and the fetures it had
were really enjoyable. But there a reason to hate it because the fetures it introduced basecly where overussed. If you compare it to modern games you dont
really see that much of a difference.

All of these games, with the exception of Halo (unless the measure is hype and popularity-to-quality gap), were revolutionary in some way, but as far as I'm concerned Super Mario 64 is the only one that deserves to be on this list.

I'm not sure if most of you guys weren't around when the Playstation was released, but Tomb Raider is actually the most deserving of being on such a list after SM64. It might not be that great a game, but it definitely changed the gaming landscape in a very substantial way.

Not that it matters, any top 5 list of most revolutionary games (even of all time) that leaves GTA3 off is nothing but a joke. Not just for the way it revolutionized open world exploration games but for the way it pushed the boundaries of what is widely acceptable as far as content.

It's not surprising that Molyneux is out of touch though, he hasn't made anything revolutionary, or even particularly good, in over 20 years.

Why the hell do people tout Halo as revolutionary? Fun? Yes. Great looking? Indeed. Thight gameplay? Yeah, at times. Revolutionary? Hell no.

Making a transition of something to an environment that just doesn't suit it as well isn't revolutionary. It's working with what you've got. And, for that, too many games deserve more credit.

If the port of a PC-centric gameplay to a console should be indicative of greatness, End War should be considered a masterpiece. Only console RTS that didn't make me crave for a mouse like a mad man. And even on this case, it's still worse than it would've been with a mouse.

You know, just like Halo.
