Molyneux: Fable III is going to be a different experience photo

One of the biggest problems gamers have is that they seem addicted to scooping up endless sequels and reiterations of a game, and then turning around and complain about them. Would we still complain if a sequel was completely different from its predecessor though?

Peter Molyneux thinks that is what Fable III is, and that's one of the reasons he's just so super excited about it. Speaking with Switched, he said, "We could make Fable III like any sequel. Surely we know what the world is now and the game mechanics. You know, 'now is not the time to experiment.' But no, I think my point is that we need to surprise people."

Of course Mario has been switching up his formula each game since day one, but we'll pretend this was yet another stroke of genius from Molyneux. Should we believe that Fable III is redefining the franchise or is this just more hot air?

So is it going to be interesting for more than a couple hours this time? I seriously doubt that. Molyneuhohoho needs to get his head out of his ass and learn how to make good games again.

I hope it's still similar at the core but I can imagine that the 'king/queen' mechanics will change up the property owning mechanics from fable 2, maybe Black&White lite.
It only has to be as good as the last 2 to be reason enough to buy a new 360 so I I'll be watching this one closely

Only Mario hasn't really been switching up his formula all that much as of late, with New Super Mario Bros Wii and the upcoming Galaxy 2. I guess NSMB Wii could be to an extent. A few more examples would be Mario Party and Mario Kart. :D Sure they expand upon their predecessors, but I wouldn't call it switching up the formula. Still a great series though for the most part, NSMB Wii is quite fun.

This is it. Fable 1 and Fable 2 were average games at best. They were enjoyable but shallow and uninteresting. This needs to stop. Why are you covering Peter Molyneux and why are we reading this shit? It has been well established that he is full of hot air and in fact all we do is chortle and him and pat ourselves on the back for not listening to him.

The first Fable was pretty good, but it's never been anything like this pompous windbag ever promised. I expect a dumbed down, or as the spinners like to call it "streamlined" gameplay.

"Fable III is going to be a different experience." Considering Molyneux's basically already said this a dozen times and has gone into quite a bit of detail about how it will be different, this isn't exactly news. That being said, if he implements everything he says he will, then it will, in fact, be different.

RichardBlaine: C'mon man! Don't fall for his bullshit again!! Fable III will be just like the other two games in the series except with some lame context sensetive touching mechanic!

The Fable games are passable, at best. This whole series is built upon false, unfullfilled promises! I personally glare at anyone who puts this series on their 'favs' list. Shame on you.

What about they experience beta testing it?

I like the series mainly for what it can be and for what Zelda and other upcoming franchises can learn from its undeniable failures. Besides, they're so unbelievable buggy I'm always scared as I play it, hoping nothing gets stuck on the scenario and the people I need to talk to are actually there.

@Phalanxxx: Well, it's because he has lost his glory. the games from the bullfrog days were great. Theme part, dungeonkeeper, theme hospital, populous. all those were very enjoyable.
When Moneyneuz founded Lionhead it shoul've been the return of Bullfrog. It mostly delivered with Black&White, but Fable promised to be a epic adventure with dynamicly growing forrests and villages, but it included none of that, exept for the scripted ones.

The Fable games are pretty good. They're well made, and are moderately innovative - at least, they retextualise old tropes in new ways. But they're nowhere near good enough to justify this continual pseudo-intellectual self worship.

I don't want Fable III just because I'm sick to death of hearing this shit.

Molly, we get it. Your games are good enough, and you do some interesting things. But this acting like you believe that everything you do is a fucking revelation is making my ears bleed.

I think we should all believe with all our hearts that Fable 3 is redefining the franchise, so that we can get angry when Molyneux craps a fat turd in front of us and calls it a game.

Kidding aside, I love the Fable games, but they're NEVER what he says they're going to be. So I rarely ever listen to that twit. Brits use the word twit, right?

I'm actually not falling for anything. If he implements his weapon evolution system, the subbing of followers for XP, and a shift in gameplay once you become king, then I would consider that to be different from previous Fable games. That's not mentioning the touch mechanic and a lot of other little things that I can't think of off the top of my head. I have no idea if any of it will be good, but you have a very strange definition of different if you don't think it applies here. Again, that's why I think this news story is unnecessary. We've known for a while that it's going to be different.

I just started replaying Fable II again this weekend so I could have a character to bring into Fable III. (For some reason I deleted my super hot, bleached blonde hero chick when I transitioned from a 20 gig to 120 gig HDD... stupid me.) Still a great game, even if it isn't challenging in the least.

Fable 2 was pretty different from Fable 1 as far as franchise sequels go so I don't doubt the third will be any less different.

A lot of you guys are being hyperbolic. The Fable games aren't really "Game of the Year" material but they're all pretty damn solid. Looking forward to the third.

Moose, I just hate that any story about Molyneux is immediately filled with negativity. So the guy broke a few promises, he's still got a fucking amazing CV behind him, and yet, whenever he's reported on this site, the hate piles in. It baffles me, especially when it's a lot of over-inflated opinion being aimed spitefully at someone who is being accused of over-inflated opinion. How does that make me an idoit? Is this the recursive irony for which you shoot me for?

ChaosTeaCup: No, it's not. There's a difference between being the man who raises himself up on a pedestal, and the man who doesn't believe he should be standing there. It's not pompous to question if someone else is worthy of the greatness they attribute to themselves.

Molyneux is not a bad guy. And he doesn't make bad games. He doesn't make the best games on the planet, either, but he likes to speak like he does; like every idea he has is new, groundbreaking, going to change the face of gaming forever.

He does this so often he has made this his idiosyncrasy. Whether he has succeeded in his claims of greatness is a matter of opinion, but it's clear that there are enough people who disagree that his endless self congratulating starts to wear thin.

I work with an artist who is like Molyneux. He does some good work. Occasionally great. But he's hardly Michelangelo, though by the way he presents himself and speaks about his own work, you have to wonder if he considers himself much, much better than that.

It's not a crime to be proud of your work, but if you don't temper pride with humility then you're just asking to be measured at your claims.

Molyneux makes it worse by his cycle of self regret, where his current game is the most phenomenally original and groundbreaking event EVER... until his next game, and then he shits on it from a great height. That's not humility - that's embarrassingly transparent self promotional tactics.

Besides, he's just NOT THAT GREAT. Fable is good, but not so good it enjoys consistent top place in "The Greatest Game Of..." lists, and critical acclaim is warm certainly, but hardly red hot.

And yet Molyneux will continue to present himself as though he's the only true artisan in this industry, the only true visionary, and in the case of this report: The only man who has the balls to do something different. Which is of course, bullshit - cheap strawman tactics. The last twelve months have seen a veritable fucking storm of surprise releases - yes, some of the best sellers have been sequels to proven franchises, and just because he is *sigh* once again 'breaking the mould' with Fable III, that does not mean he's taking a risk with a new franchise. He's just as guilty as trading on an old name. But there have been plenty who DID take risks and who succeeded with it. So in the end, his argument is a cheap play on words.

It's this shit that makes me think he's a giant cockspank.

I like him. Sounds to me that you're taking things way too seriously. To me he's the guy behind most of my favourite games of the 90's who, whilst with Lionhead not reaching the heights of his glory days with Bullfrog, is still a very dinspired guy - who then gets asked a bunch of questions by games journalists, and then gets shat on by spiteful little gamers for having a vision that often exceeds the capabilities of the realities of the developement cycles. I'll bet he's a nightmare to work for, but I'll also bet that his team wouldn't want to work for anyone else. Just another example of gamers taking themselves far too seriously.

I think YOU are taking things way too seriously. This is an opinion board, where people come to express... opinion. I'm sorry that it bothers you personally that many of us don't have a romanticised vision of Molyneux.

I'm happy for you that you like the guy. But I don't particularly care about him, or his games, which are 'pretty good' at best (in my opinion), so you'll have to excuse me if I don't go all doe eyes and clap excitedly whenever he starts on another of his nausea enducing self worship sessions. And personally, I think he's a fucking cockspank.

Using passive aggressive and/or condescending comments in your post, like "spiteful little gamers", contrary to what you might think, does not qualify you as being 'right'. It's about as good as saying "Only an idiot would disagree" or "Anyone with taste knows I'm correct".

Perhaps you should stop projecting the idea that anyone who disagrees with you is by necessity some snivelling little internet skulk who isn't entitled to an opinion like YOU are.

Self righteous, much?
