Molyneux doesn't think PlayStation Move is a big deal photo

The Sony Wiimote, codenamed PlayStation Move, was revealed in all its glory at GDC, and Peter Molyneux isn't impressed. Claiming to have not been surprised (and who could, really?), the game designer and Microsoft thrall declared that Move was not as big a step as Project Natal.

"We’re not really surprised, are we?" says Molyneux. "I mean, at E3 last year we saw they were having a wand, and that’s kind of what I expected. It looks like they’ve taken a step forward but it’s not as big a step as something like Natal, I don’t think. This is purely me talking personally, but I think maybe it’s slightly more a device for the core than it is for the casual market, because I think it’s quite precise.

"As a designer it’s another one of those things I’d love to get my hands on and to play around with. As a consumer, everyone’s talking about motion control now -- I mean, I’m starting to get confused. It’s kind of like the arms race, with the Wii MotionPlus and now the Sony Move and now I’m getting kind of confused."

Molyneux makes a fine point here. I don't know about anybody else, but I already have a Wii, and I didn't buy the PS3 because I wanted another one. I'm not fond of Sony's current plan to cram Move into all of its games, and I'm not keen to see the PS3 turn into a more expensive Nintendo system. Frankly, I don't think all the consumers who bought into the Wii craze will rush out and buy another one either.

Neither of these motion controllers are a big deal.

If he is talking about Move there, I think it's a step in the right direction.

I think the fact he seems to believe this is a bad thing speaks volumes about him.

What plan to cram it into all of their games?

Joystiq conducted an interview with some lady from Sony(Really descriptive, I know) and she essentially said outside of all her PR bullshit that it was up to their individual studios to use the Move or not. SOCOM was brought up as an example, where the developers were given the Move and code, and found how easy it was to implement. I'm sure Sony had a word or two put in there somewhere, but still.

Interestingly, she also said they acquired several new studios solely for Motion Plus games, and the only other things getting it so far are rehashes for Little Big Planet and that shitty EyePet.

In short, I think Sony knows that they need to be cautious, because people don't want this shit jammed down their throats.

"It looks like they’ve taken a step forward but it’s not as big a step as something like Natal, I don’t think."

If he's talking about technical advancement, like not using a silly glowing ball, then he's missing the whole point of these things. Heck, he's missing the whole point of the Wii, which is you don't need all that hi-end technology to build a mint.

The price point is still the main sticking point, I think. The marginal cost is better than getting a Wii, but all that means is that it is appealing to existing PS3 owners, not new buyers.

People who wanted motion control already bought a wii. Most gamers who bought a ps3 don't care for motion control. Same with the xbox.

Chaos, i must agree entirley.

Is this bit just worded, badly? Or is he talking about Move or Natal?...

"This is purely me talking personally, but I think maybe it’s slightly more a device for the core than it is for the casual market, because I think it’s quite precise." - Seems to sound like he's talking about Move and confirming suspicions about Natal being casual-tastic.

But you wouldn't expect that from an Ms dev, unless that's what they're actually going for?!?

As long as they don't try sticking the Move where it doesn't belong, I.E. in every game for no reason, then I have no problem with the Move.

Basically, I want games to either be Move dependant (I.E. you can't play the game without a Move controller) or Move independant (no Move controller use at all). If they start making games where half the game uses the normal controller and the other half uses the Move, then I'll get annoyed.

From Sony's perspective, it would be a bad thing: they didn't put Move out there to appeal to the core--they're quite clearly trying to tap into the new market that Nintendo appealed to with the Wii.

If Sony was interested in reaching the core, they'd have devoted those resources to exclusive IPs, the PSN service, or really just about anything else.

Mind you, I'm not saying the core can't enjoy motion control (I do), I'm simply saying that is not what Sony is banking on.

I reserve judgment on the PS Move until we see a frakin' RTS made to use the wand as a mouse.

For God sakes, I've been waiting for a proper RTS on the Wii for ages now, and all we got was a 2D semi-RTS involving the Chinese, Aztecs and (God-awful broken) Vikings.

That initial tech demo for Move at E3, showing off the crude military toys being controlled with the wand in all it's primitive glory, made me harder than anything else this year could even hope to. For once, I might be able to control an army on my couch without it being awkward as hell.

I agree. I'm not excited about either Move, or Natal and I totally lost all desire to play the Wii anymore. They're both lame attempts to get in on the casual market and honestly, I don't see how flailing your arms about is any more fun than just pushing buttons.

Am I the only person stoked for Socom + Move?

I actually loved Confrontation (could be something to do with it being fixed before it released here in the UK) and I love to light gun! So to have a Socom with an analogue nub AND a light gun setup get's me pretty hard.

Shocking that someone in Microsoft's pocket isn't incredibly enthused about a Sony peripheral...

I absolutely agree, however, that this whole rush to beat Nintendo won't end well. If it is truly the future of gaming (which remains to be seen), then maybe it's a necessary step; but Motion Control is still a Nintendo novelty and I agree that trying to shoehorn the technology onto other consoles isn't really in anyone's best interest.

if it is just an MS EyeToy, that'll be hilarious

Honestly, Move looks like Wii Waggle HD. I can't say I'll NEVER buy into it, but I'm really not that excited for it, after seeing it in action.

I'm not excited for Natal either. Honestly, is it too much to ask to let me just sit on my ass and drink a Sam Adams when I'm gaming?

the globe is so the eyetoy can track the controller 1:1 and so it knows where to place the swords, rackets etc..

and enough with the penis jokes, didnt the wii have a game where you could "glitch " the controller to constantly vibrate? and dont forget the wii accessory pack with the several dildo addons that came with it. we've heard all the jokes already.

so it looks like a glowing dildo from the future. grow up.

@Fetusmilk.

You started it with your 'ooh PS3 is for adults' bullshit. All us gamers are slightly childish in reality, just that PS3 gamers seem to have the highest opinion of themselves. And you just added yourself to that demograph.

It's boring. Can't you just like your console without it being at the expense of someone else's console? No? Then you're thw one who needs to grow up.

On the upside, the Move (and to a lesser extent, Natal) will provide some competition.

So far these consoles have only been competing on things like price, graphics and game selection, not on how the player actually controls games.

Also, I think it's a mistake to put everything that isn't a traditional dual analog controller under the "motion control" umbrella. There's waggle, there's tilt, there's 1:1 and separately, there's pointer controls.

- Waggle, I think we can all agree, is terrible.

- Tilt and 1:1 can work but they're limited to very specific games (sword fighting, sports, etc.).

- Pointer controls, if done well, can surpass dual analog for controlling numerous types of games (first and third person shooters, RTS, point-and-click adventures, drawing games (of which there are a shortage of), tower defense, some puzzle games like World of Goo).

In the not-so-distant future I think we'll all look back and laugh at how we tried to play every single conceivable genre using just one type of controller that isn't efficient at controlling them all.
