Every time Peter Molyneux opens his mouth, I wince. It’s not that I don’t like the guy. I love him in that non-kissing, less passionate way. The wince is because I know he’ll end up saying something that he doesn’t necessarily mean.
Molyneux recently spoke to the BBC (via GI) about 2008’s best games and the problems facing the industry in 2009. He praised titles like Grand Theft Auto IV and LittleBigPlanet before cutting to one of those rib-tickling statements about the economic issues facing the industry and how he isn’t excited by anything in 2009.
“Next year, well, it's all looking a bit dry. All the triple A titles came out this Christmas and while there is stuff in 2010 we can look forward to, off the top of my head I cannot think of anything next year that really excites me,” he said. “Everyone says games are good value for home entertainment, despite the relatively high price. I'm not so sure. I think we're going to see a lot of price pressure put on games.”
I’m not convinced, like Molyneux, that 2009 is going to be dry. Jim recently tossed up an article illuminating the many valid titles that we have to look forward to. In reality, it’s just an off year for Lionhead. As for retailers fiddling with game prices, I’m all for it. I would love to be able to get my hands on Street Fighter IV at a discounted rate. I’ll happily run home screaming my thanks to the economic gods.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I guess I'm actually one of the few people who thought 2008 kind of sucked. It was mostly full of sequels that didn't live up to their predecessors. My most asked question of 07-08 was "why aren't I playing the game that came before this one. I stopped playing Brawl because I liked Melee more, stopped playing Galaxy because I liked 64 more, stopped playing Twilight Princess because I liked OoT, WW, and MM more, stopped playing Oblivion because I liked Morrowind more (although that was really and 05-06 game), and I didn't even get GTA4 because I had learned my lesson by then. I'm really glad never played Fallout 1 and 2, or else I probably would have been disappointed by 3. The only sequel that came out in 08 that I liked more than the original was Bangai-o Spirits, which is probably my GotY. Between that and Fallout 3 though, nothing really blew my socks off this year.
Buy Bangai-o Spirits.
@gamedaya - I see your point, but I think you should try MGS 4.
DIABLO 3 MOTHERFUCKERS, HAVE YOU HEARD OF IT?
There was still plenty of non-sequal releases in '08.
I know it's probably not Molynuex's cup of tea but how can anyone say a year that may see SC2 release has nothing exciting.
The RE5 demo just showed me that I can't play RE without a wiimote anyore, I have enough shootahs right now and for the rest. Maybe a nice RPG and a Bayonetta? I'm sure I'll fap over SF4 and then play it for a total of one day :)
If Blizzard doesn't release Diablo 3 or Starcraft 2 this year, I'm gonna have to tell Israel that Blizzard is housing civilians so they will get bombed.
It was more of just a generic list of big launches with new IPs or games that were well received. Also you can add World of Goo to the list and I'm sure there are others too.
My point pretty much was that while sequels may have had a dominating presence in the press/media there were still tons of new IPs this year.
There's a lot that 2008 did. The vast majority of the Triple A sequels were great, as well.
Not to mention God of War 3, Street Fighter 4, Resident Evil 5, and possibly FF13 and Dissidia.
I'm tired of gaming 'celebs' that hype the crap out of their own products and crap on other people's work.
I don't need to go down the list of games coming out since the whole of this thread has been proving Peter wrong, but I will say that if Peter isn't excited about anything this year, I doubt that this old dude even plays videogames...
...yeah I said it
