Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

If my preview of ModNation Racers wasn't enough for you, or if you were all "tl;dr," then this post is for you.

Sony and United Front Games dumped a bunch of straight up game footage videos on us, in addition to the packaged trailer I posted along with my hands-on preview and details. The first one, seen above, gives you a better idea of how the game's track designer works. It's overwhelming, easy to use, and completely awesome all at the same time.

Hit the jump to check out some of the game's character creation in action, as well a video of the game's racing in action.

ModNation Racers is slated for release in 2010, exclusively for the PlayStation 3.

I don't really get the appeal of a game that bases itself around user content. I like user content, but I think it should be something that builds up around a solid game, not the main selling point of the game. I guess it kinda has to be like this on a console game though.

THANK YOU DESTRUCTOID!

@Face

UFG said in the latest QORE episode that they do have a fully fledged single player experience as well as the customisation options. They've even gone as far to hire 'hollywood writers' to pen a story...

Nick... Do you know if you can set the obstacles/traps to come on after player complete a certain number of laps?

I would love to be able to alter the track as the race progresses.

Also. It would be awesome if you could link a Replay to your track so people could see what it looked like before loading it up.

GET ON TELLING UFG NICK!!

I'm still waiting for some company to take the concept of MUGEN and make it into a user friendly, community-based online sharing model a la LittleBigPlanet.

The whole idea of "Games that let you make games" has been around for a while (RPG Maker, Fighter Maker, among others), and they have a dedicated following for a reason: for all those times we've said "I could make a better game than this", these games actually allow us to back it up.

Is there going to be a progressive way of unlocking more stuff that you could use to make a track, mod guy, or vehicle?

@oloacoo

I'd imagine so... but it's kinda annoying.

I'd love to be able to go crazy with my designs straight away instead of having to unlock stuff (ala LBP).

If this game is over $40, no one will buy it, myself included.

@Onlineatron:

Not sure, but there were literally so many options I couldn't have possibly seen them all. The traps and what not can be linked to triggers of certain things (racer going over them, for example), so that may be an option. We saw one pretty crazy trap that had a player reversing the motion of a spinning plate that racers had to cross. Hilarity ensued.

@oloacoo:

I asked, and the answer I got was that everything should be accessible from the very start so you can go right into and start rocking your own tracks. As for whether or not they'll adding additional track parts and themes, they wouldn't say outside "we're looking into it." My guess is "yes," though.

@Magesx:

That's a shame. What's it missing that would make up for that extra $20?

I just can't imagine a significant amount of people spending $60 on a kart racing game. I've never really been a big racing fan anyways, but a kart racing game like this just seems so limited. I'm sure people will make crazy maps and such, but that only goes so far. It's not one of those games that I'm going to sit and play for hours at a time, which I would expect from a $60 game.

Well good thing you speak only for yourself because many people will happily prove you wrong, myself included.

Tho I don't entirely think this is a 40usd game, if it is out before xmas with the proper advertising at a 40usd asking price, it might sell sheitloads as a new IP.

It looks nice, but I hope it's more than a bland Mario Kart clone with customization options.

Also, it reminded me of LEGO Racers.
