Modern Warfare PC compared to Modern Warfare 2 PC photo

PC gamers, prepare to shake your fists in anger once more! Infinity Ward won no fans yesterday for announcing a 9v9 player cap on all servers, while also sticking by its decision to scrap dedicated servers in Modern Warfare 2. In order to drive home just what a raw deal PC gamers will be getting, a NeoGAF poster created a comparison chart between Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and the new sequel. Things don't look good.

Console commands, custom maps, recorded gameplay, mod tools and filters were all available in Call of Duty 4, and aren't to be found in Modern Warfare 2. Networking architecture and the average ping are also listed as inferior to that of 2007's shooter. The only category in which Modern Warfare 2 wins out is in the online profile section, which is by no means a dealbreaker.

Seems strange to say, but it would appear that, for once, the best bet is to buy it on consoles. Most of the touted benefits of PC gaming aren't in Modern Warfare 2 at all. Still, there's always that super accurate mouse/keyboard thing that people love so much.

Suicide!

Well at least that's what they say in Halo. Srsly this game just BEGS to be pirated/boycotted/pirated and burned in protest. And I don't even play PC games or online multiplayer.

1 step closer to PC gaming becoming console gaming in a different skin. Thing is, even with the angry PC gamers vowing piracy, this game will be the biggest seller this year at the very least.

The PC gaming industry killed itself when it alienated off the shelf PCs not being able to play games.

My brother's laptop can't even play Call of Duty 2 because the graphics card is integrated. The laptop is only two years old.

PC gaming outside of the Sims and Wow is dead since the average person can't play or afford the PCs required for most new games.

And don't give me that "Build it yourself" bunk. It's never easy if you've never done it before.

Some people on this forum know how to build a PC from parts bought on NewEgg, I don't.

So, no patronizing people here.

Off the shelf PCs were *never* able to play most new games. Discrete video cards have practically been a requirement since Quake.

And don't give me that crap about not being able to afford a gaming PC. The upgrades that allow you to play almost all games on high settings run about 200-300 dollars.

Why is Lan support on MW2 WORST than LAN support on MW1? As far as i know they're going to be just the same, also zero ping for the host doesn't sound sa that much of a disavantage

this chart seems kinda extremist and unnecessarily aggressive. Also, people could remember that if you don't want to buy it you don't need to, this is starting to look like a product that isn't worth it's price anymore

While a in-depth chart, how can you state for fact what IWNet is capable of when the PC version is not even out yet?

I mean, did the creator of this chart just pull stuff from quotes? How does he know there is no "BAD LANGUAGE FILTER" for example? How could he measure an average ping when IWNet is not even up and running?

I take this "comparison" with a grain of salt. But like most of you guys, I will be playing this for the most part on the 360 anyway. I played the first one on the 360 and it was fine for me, so no need to change.

Oy.

If it wasn't for the fact that my store pretty much NEEDS to carry Modern Warfare 2 (our friends/patrons will DISOWN us if we don't), I am now very close to the point where I would opt to not spend money on this thing. Not as some financial tactic, or emotional boycott, but simply because this no longer seems like a valuable product to own, and I've already got the first Modern Warfare.

@gabapenteado

Modern Warfare's lanplay according to the IW discussion requires you to use the internet to play on LAN which defeats the purpose of using LAN. In fact the way they phrased it was "You can play with friends *online* with our service, IW.net" which was a rather clumsy dodge.

Much of the anger by PC users to Modern Warfare 2 was that this was their *must buy* game until things fell apart. Many of whom had already made investments into servers but were up until a month before release were decieved on their investments (IW was quoted that the "PC multiplayer would remain unchanged from Modern Warfare 1"). Even though many PC gamers will no longer be purchasing Modern Warfare 2 there is a great feeling of being burned as a consumer, you can't say you're surprised at the outrage. If anything I would be shocked if people were apathetic about such changes and I'm not defining that to MW2 but to any shift.

Additionally part of the matter as well is this change was for all intents and purposes done fairly under the radar. In fact unless you were intently following 402's blog/twitter the matter would have NEVER entered into your mind. So it comes off as rather underhanded move by IW as well.

In fact were it not for the outrage this new "feature" would have arguably never have cropped up in mainstream news.

@ lubczyk: you don't need to build your own, but you do need to know what your buying. A PC is not a console, you can't just pick up the first box you see and expect it to run any piece of software (esp. games).

@ TheWeaponeer: They're not talking about gameplay features. Sure, gameplay features actually have to be played with to understand them, MOST of these are pretty hard facts. Yeah, I say "most" 'cause some of these are a little bit BS. "Manually select server to join" wouldn't always be a bonus, and "average ping" isn't really something you can know before hand.

FF7 and 8 on the PC has a save system based on PS1's memory card, and you stuck with two cards (30 slots) unlike the console where we can have more than two cards. RE4 has no exit and no mouse look.
Those games were ports, unlike MW2.

UT3 suports mouse and keyboard on the PS3.
Sadly not MW2.

Well vote with your wallet i was going to buy MW2 on pc but now i will not buy it due to completely gimping multiplayer

Its ironic because i have a friend who has been playing cod4 on his 360 since launch i let him play it on my bc about a month ago and now after seeing the game on the pc he can no longer stand to play the gimped 360 version

all we can do is hope the next call of duty game from infinity ward reverts back to the old way otherwise i will never buy another call of duty pc game

As for the bad language filter thing, I think that's a reference to the fact that you can't kick people from a game. Someone in a dev chat specifically asked if players could kick someone if they're being rude or using bad language. Bashandslash.com has a transcript of a dev chat thing best buy did. It's pretty hilarious. My favorite bit was that anyone asking about dedicated servers was pretty much booted from it.

I don't really see how it's a better bet to buy it on consoles. It's not like the console versions have any more features than the PC version. It's just that the PC version was expected to have more than it does, but it turns out it *only* has just as much as the console versions.

The best bet is to buy it for consoles? Ummm, no? It's still just as limited, and has lesser graphics. So I'll just not buy it. If they want to make money of the PC version, they'd better make a real PC game next time. And, Dexter345 hit the nail on the head, the PC version *only* has as much as the console version, not as much as it *should* have had.

Of course you want to buy it for the consoles. The shitcanning of dedicated servers should have been your first hint. The game clearly wasn't planned and created for the PC, it was designed for the consoles. Activision didn't want IW to put too much work into the PC version if people were just going to pirate it and hack and do whatever else you crazy PC people do. From a business standpoint, they probably saved a lot of money. From a consumer standpoint, they're big fat meany-head jerks. And they smell like poop. And probably eat poop too, which is why they smell like it so much.

More people buy the games than pirate it I'm sure. Why? Because a lot of PC gamers will go out of their way to support developers that support us. And, as a franchise, CoD wouldn't have gotten ANYWHERE without the support of legit PC gamers. Oh, and there's a difference between 'hacking' a game and modding a game when they give you mod tools.

It's pretty much been said, why bother giving PC players anything when it will just be pirated? The price hike was most likely done to cover their losses from dipshits pirating the game. I don't give two about any of the features that were 'cut' since I've played on 360 exclusively since the days of FEAR on PC. So, for me, there is no problem here.

"My brother's laptop can't even play Call of Duty 2 because the graphics card is integrated. The laptop is only two years old. "

Huh? Why would you expect to run Crysis on an integrated graphics card? Do you expect PC games to be comparable to Wii games? You also do realize that there is no overarching company like Sony or Microsoft dictating what games get made for the Pc, right?

This is another case of somebody feeling the world should revolve around them ... in this this case just because you don't happen to know how to go to Newegg.com, I guess.

And console players don't pirate? Can I get a "Puh-leez" in the house?

EVERY platform is affected by piracy. Hell, am I the only one who remembers that there were people pirating SNES games back in the day? Oh, and for this game in particular, the .iso of the *Xbox 360* version hit the Internet about a week ago. Now, that seems to tell me that there's a pretty good demand for pirated content for console.

It's funny you should mention that because World at War on the PC at first did not have dedicated servers. But something strange... almost alien happened... they listened to their PC customers and provided dedicated servers and now World at War is enjoying a great bit of success on the PC.

It would seem Treyarch learned what Infinity Ward just forgot. It's also a sad day when Treyarch *gets* PC gamers more than Infinity Ward, I'm guessing this is the mirror universe Treyarch?

All Activision/Blizzard cares about these days is money, and they'll go to any length to get it, even if it mean mutilating great games. Yep, it sucks to be a PC user.
