Just don’t think Infinity Ward changed the direction of the series -- the first-person perspective is still the star of the show. The third-person perspective is tied to a single playlist in the multiplayer component.
“3rd person is a new playlist mode in multiplayer,” Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling told Kotaku earlier this afternoon. “So, you can play your favorite playlists [or] game types, like Team Deathmatch just standard, or in Hardcore mode … or in the new 3rd person mode, which means you and everyone in the game is in 3rd person.”
According to Bowling, players won’t have the ability to toggle the new perspective on or off while inside a match -- either in or out of the playlist. The aim is to keep all players on equal footing. He added this mode is “just another way to play the game.”
Now all IW has to do is add zombies and make the characters feel like rusty turrets, and hey, Resident Evil 5: Modern Warfare. Make it happen, guys.
It's a little weird how they are doing a purely third person mode instead of a toggle - I guess they want to get an idea of how popular it is without affecting the balance of the game. Maybe the next game or a spinoff will feature third person more prevalently if this is one of the more popular game types.
The reason there's no toggle, I presume, is that being in third person mode would give you a clear tactical advantage (looking around corners you shouldn't be able to look around, for instance).
My guess is it's just easier if everybody is in the same mode the whole time.
I just sat through another damned cotton commercial to see the same video as earlier today. And here I thought it was going to be something different. Gah.
I think a different game mode just for a different camera view is a bit much. I don't get this whole thing about an advantage either. How it is an advantage if everyone has access to it?
Well, at least developers are starting to get out of the "First-Person Action" Guns, guns, guns mindset. A third-person mode might be a little bit more contemplative.
However, this is cool, and I could see why they would make them separate. Third-person let's you see the surrounding area better, it would be a huge advantage, or at least ruin some of the stealth element.
I actually think this is a pretty cool idea. It's just switching it up a little, and the gameplay will probably have enough of an effect on it for it to matter.
This seems like one of those cases where like, if they hadn't put it in the game, it would have been great. But since it's in the game, the option to not have it be toggled on/off, it just kinda takes away from the game and makes you ask, "why not toggle it?"
@WarZombie, get AdBlock Plus for firefox, you won't see it. Jeez.
@RBinator, its an advantege because its primarily an FPS with a few TPS playlists. If it was in every playlist, you would have to switch to TPS to be competitive in the slightest because its such a massive advantage. No one would be able to play the FPS way.
@wh1terav3n: That certainly could filter out FPS view in a way, but wouldn't FPS still be better for aiming? Either way, it sounds like it would just take away more than add if the feature was standard, especially since the game is primarily FPS view.
I'm siding with @dogtraining on this one. Who gets extra WIN points for hyperlinking 'belly fat'.
-but no-
TPS [third?] Looks fun enough, I'll invariably kick it to the side after a few rounds and concentrate on the hardcore TD. Keeping it wholly separate from the FPS action is equal parts necessary and awesome.
HAHAHA I thought of a new title.... Call of Duty: Gears of Warfare 2 with added 3 person mode, camera shooting and oh yeah wall BOUNCING FOOLS! (okay the last part was a bit excessive, or maybe the whole thing, but I loved GoW1 and this might be the sole reason i invest rather than steal/borrow from a friend. Thus i am investing into some burglaring tools =D)
Wow, nice to see mostly everybody having an open mind to a totally optional feature. EVERYONE on Kotaku is fucking bitching, moaning and crying about this added, totally optional feature. Like they are being forced to fucking play it in the 3rd person. Douches.
@savagesaladin: It's things like that, that keep me from goig to Kotaku. That, and the fact they don't proofread or fact check their work. Destructoid is better.
Gears 2 already covered the best 3rd person shooter position for me.
But hey, 3rd person it's always welcomed, just like cotton, everybody is sicked with generic FPS.
so, what happens if you're playing hardcore? you don't have crosshairs to begin with, and really the only way you're gunna get a kill is if you look down the sights.. i don't see that happening with this 3rd person perspective.. this is probably the first thing IW has done WRONG with MW2..
Testing the waters. The next Call of Duty will be developed by Treyarch, who will keep it an FPS, but then when development shifts back to IW, will change the series to third person. That way the series stays fresh.
Then it wont be played because its not intertwined with regular TDM or whatever they decide to use it for. There is no harm by adding this as a separate, optional, game type.
This is the neatest feature I've heard about the game so far. 3rd person shooters are all I can bear on consoles, but I'd be playing this on PC anyway. I'll probably skip this. I haven't really enjoyed a CoD game since the original, though admittedly, I haven't given any of them much of a chance.
Metal Gear Solid 4 did 3rd person shooting the best. If this is successful you can bet IW will take all the credit and leave the real creative geniuses out to dry.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. JESUS DESTRUCTOID, FIND A BETTER AD.

It's an OPTION. Options = good.
And this is the fourth video I've watched on the main page today, and I've yet to see an ad. I feel like I'm missing out on something.

Wait a second...
