Modern Warfare 2 pulls in $550 million in five days photo

I'm sure we all knew Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 would sell well, but not like this. Activision has revealed that the title has grossed an estimated $550 million worldwide in just the first five days of its release.

This makes it, Activision says, the biggest launch in entertainment history. It beat out the largest reported five-day worldwide box office record holder, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($394 million). And in the realm of videogames, it crushed the five-day worldwide sales records set by Grand Theft Auto IV ($310).

Activision also blames Modern Warfare 2 for helping to set Xbox LIVE records, with more than 5.2 million multiplayer hours logged on in the first day of its release. Additionally, 2.2 million users were noted as playing the title on that same day, unlocking 11 million achievements. (Activision doesn't mention the number of banned Xbox 360 consoles due to people trying to play Modern Warfare 2 early, but I'm pretty sure that's a record, too.)

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick is pleased, calling it a "pop culture phenomenon." But the company isn't resting on its laurels. In an odd way to end a press release, the publisher seemingly shouts out to its investors saying it "remains cautious about the U.S. global economy as well as other variables that can affect industry fundamentals and our own performance, including customer spending with remains a significant concern."

Say that three times fast.

Ouch, and Nintendo thinks NSMBW can beat that? I don't think so.

I'm out of the loop on this one, none of my friends play it, neither do I. And it's the biggest launch in history? I'm confused.

Over half a BILLION in less than a week. I wonder if the tanking economy actually HELPED sales ("well, I'm out of work so I don't have anything else to do...")

Cautious about an economy that just gave you half a billion dollars for a 5-hour campaign?

Are you cautious that they've now given you every last cent left and there's nothing to milk?

Somewhere in that half a billion are my €60. I'm famous now too! I wonder what it cost to make the game.

I just wish more of that money went to Infinity Ward and far far Less to Activision.

Shame that every creative industry eventually gets eaten up by middlemen and publishers.

How long till we see the gaming industry version of Simon Cowell? Ready to rape everything creative from it and turn it into their own personal cash-cow, putting out less creative products to a bigger mass market and making money hand over fist while the industry dies.

Hand on a second, isn't he called Bobby "knobrot" Kotick?

Shit, it has begun. Watch this space for "Game Idol" or the "G Factor".

@GeorgeMichael: I know, right? It's not like anyone plays that sorry excuse for multiplayer anyway.

Daaauuuhhhmmm!

Now if we can pull that off with a considerably small fuss over the "controversial" scene I consider that a victory.

Not surprising, I rarely hear video games mentioned in my everyday life. I heard jocks and chavs discussing their experience at the midnight launch. And then nearly coming to blows over the effectiveness of the P-90.
It makes me feel a bit disappointed, I honestly think there are games much more deserving of just a fraction of this success.

"This makes it, Activision says, the biggest launch in entertainment history."

i thought the biggest launch was the movie, Titanic ??
Your Moms Hot Lover's Avatar - Comment posted on 11/18/2009 13:12
Your Moms Hot Lover
Titanic holds the record for biggest total gross over time, biggest one day launch is Dark Knight, biggest five day opening is Harry Potter Half Blood.

In terms of unit sales movies are still more popular obviously. But this is good news for the gaming industry regardless of whether you hate Activision or not.

I didn't buy it- later on if there is a price drop on it I might get it but as of right now it is too much hype and the last thing I want to do is give $ to activision
