Modern Warfare 2 PC version locked out until launch day photo

With some stores going absolutely overboard with the whole releasing Modern Warfare 2 before Tuesday thing, it's not surprising to hear that the retail PC versions of the game will not be playable, according to 1UP, until the official launch date.

Imagine the joy vanish from your face as you get home after scoring an early copy only to realize, crap, this damn thing won't run! You are now an owner of a fabulous new paperweight, my friend. Since MW2 on PC utilizes Steamworks, users are locked out similar to how they were for Borderlands.

It's a bummer, for sure, but when you compare it to the other issues gamers are having with the PC edition, it's not so horrible. I know, I know -- my positivity isn't helping here.

This releasing just 9 hours before the launch of the game?

@RenagadePanda
We've thought this would happen for a long time, but I guess now we have proof.

Yeah we already knew that since it was confirmed that the game would force Steam.

Is it surprise that they don't want you to play it early. I'm not even wasting my time on it anyways. A game probably built for casuals with less features for more money? I don't want that or to support the precedent it sets.

How is this surprising? It works just like any game release that uses Steam. It was the same thing with Half-Life 2 in 2004.

Sooo...change the callender on your PC? No? They've thought of that?

See this is why I just play consoles. Nothing's simple with you people.

@Xzyliac: You're assuming they couldn't do the same on the consoles. They aren't, but there's no reason they couldn't.

@Xzyliac: It's all very simple. You find the solution via google and follow the advice given. PC gamers generally like advanced options, more accurate controls, better graphics, modification abilities, and all of the other many things consoles can't offer. Consoles are only now doing many of the things PC games were doing 15 years ago.

It is relaxing with consoles not needing to worry about specifications, and even after them there are many things that can go wrong.

How hyped?

Add to this that everyone who pre ordered it has been ripped off. Tesco's & Sainsburys (supermarkets in the UK) are selling it for £26.00, which is a much more reasonable price.

Hell, I'm almost tempted to pick it up for that.

Almost, but its still £25.00 more than this nerfed console port is worth.

@Xzyliac (Your name plays hell with my phone dictionary, heh.)

The game is locked on steam until its official release, the same way that console owners shouldn't be playing it yet. Since the PC version isn't actually out yet, you are forced to not be able to play it. The fact people have it already is just a blunder.

This stuff is stupid. Little wonder people are turned off from PC gaming when increasingly, publishers are dictating what can and (mostly) can't be done with the game you just bought.

When you basically tell people you can take that game they just bought away whenever you like, that they can only install it a few times and all the rest of it is it any surprise they either stop playing or start downloading things illegally?

its counter-intuitive for console users to NOT want mod options for the PC. after all many of the best games that console play come from PC and mods from pc games. PC is where all the development takes place as well so while the console community as a whole doesn't care about the pc community they should as that's the hand that feeds them. everything that is the future of console is PC NOW

Yeah points all taken. I secretly envy PC gamers and their advancedness but I'm publicly intimidated by them.

@Tarvu,

Usually the min specs are parts that were midrange like 4 years ago, so you'll be pretty sure that it's time to upgrade when you're playing your games on low at 1280x720. Nothing hard about that. I admit that you can run into an occasional (rare if you mostly stick to Steam) problem but that's the price that comes with such huge amounts of flexibility. One could argue that solving these problems will give you very helpful experience and knowledge if you ever have to deal with computers in the future, which is likely. Besides, there are a many, many, many people that can help you on the internet.

That said, for me the advantages of PC gaming far outweighs the occasional frustration but some people might not like dealing with it.

I hate PCs but I'm glad I have the knowledge I have, even if it is less than extensive. Now I can build my own PC and have a general idea what other people are talking about specification wise. It takes a lot of time to research all the components, their features and whatnot but in the end it is worth it because you get a superior experience. Any game I can get on the PC I do so. Texture quality, control (can use keyboard/mouse as well as usb 360 controller), fps, sound. Everything is better. My computer has blown up less than my xbox and was easier to fix.

The most recent game I bought for xbox was Rockband and before that Mass Effect (Only because I didn't think about a PC version)

The thing about PCs are they are just like other technical things, playing an instrument or learning any skill. Once you do it you will have that basic knowledge with you forever.

Well another fucking reason the pc version sucks.

Also, one would think this would be time locked on the 10th as well right? I mean other games have been, where they don;t release until like 5pm the day of release. And thats some serious bullshit.

Not that it matters since I refuse to buy this. I wanted the game primarily for the multiplayer, and they horribly gimped the multiplayer. Count one sale lost for Infinity Ward.

I'm confused... gamestop says it releases on the 10th - yet steam says it releases on the 13th? Is it true that you can buy in store after the release date and have to just hold on to it? wtf//

So here I am again. I just got kicked off Infinityward P.C form for posting an argument last night. I know what your thinking it must contain bad language but no it does not. Infinity got afraid of what I had to say. Lots of people are saying it was a good post, but now its gone. I could be wrong but I am pity sure its gone. Now their starting to suppress freedom of speech. I have no problem with console gamers as I say below but the Community that was created on the P.C has been stolen by Steam and now is under their control. All you console gamers how would you feel if Macintosh or Google( short of some good examples) or some other software company brought out the X Box Live community from under you? read my argument below, it was enough to get kicked of over so it contains some information they do not want people to know.

Start of Complaint

I am not the type of person to do this and considering its 2:30 am in morning in Ireland, you know were I am going with this. I think it's time for a proper debate without any foul language and fighting, so here I am. My disappointment is not as strong as the hardcore gamer who loved M.W on the P.C but of a person who owns a P.C and an X Box. I am hoping to start a debate, logical and cool headed for everyone that is disappointed by the P.C release. Infinity Ward will not listen to you if shout or swear or fight or be aggressive in general so lets do this properly, and the we might get some critical feed back from them.

I first brought M.W six months after release on the X Box 360 and I was lucky because the retail was sold out and the copy I got was a second hand just swapped a few minutes earlier in the store. What a brilliant game. Single and multi. Since then I brought a gaming P.C knowing the community was strong and having the extra arsenal of P.C hardware I thought I had a winner for sure.

My first complaint is about the adoption of Steam. Why? We still don't know why Infinity went down this road even with the retail version. We got the party line about D.R.M and improved community game play via Steam but we know now what this has come to. D.R.M is dead., E.A dropped it for Dragon Age Origins. Infinity ward please explain? You have now put all your P.C fans in an untenable position by first leaving out dedicated servers and then delaying the downloadable digital version. Please explain? The opinion of the community is now that you have made us second class gamers.

You also have managed to cause other online retailers to stop selling your product. I am sure your marketing department is delighted about this. The aggressive nature of Steam being forced on your customers and loyal fans who actually do not pirate your games is not only a move to alienate your P.C customers but also probably breaks European competition laws. Thrust me if you have the E.U will come after you, taking Intel for example.

I can understand if you want to give the console gamer the same experience but to degrade one version to suite one community in favour of the other is a hostile move to isolate P.C gamers. Please explain Infinity?

In my opinion I feel terribly sorry for your programmers and developers who by the looks of it managed to pull of a technical miracle on the X Box. If any one does not know by now the graphics chip on the X Box is obsolete and they have offloaded most of the physics processing and graphics processing to the C.P.U. That's right Infinity is flogging a dead horse. What a joke, a gaming machine with 256 mb of RAM gets a better version over the P.C or to be precise not so much superior but customised for 12 year olds. Infinity you have to explain this? you have actually brought the forward momentum of I.T progression to a halt, a feat Einstein would be proud of.

Consoles account for most of the game sales. That's correct but 10 million dollars lost in a recession is still that money lost. Is your marketing department a centre of excellence in the field of study of retards because either their mentally handicapped or their a pack of monkeys on roller-skates?

All I can say to finish is that you have destroyed the P.C community online and by the looks of it and I am one of the millions who thinks so.

End
