Modern Warfare 2 not taking pages out of Treyarch's book photo

If you loved Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare but weren't so hot on World at War, then you'll be pleased to know that Infinity Ward won't be doing what Treyarch did and basically copy the last Call of Duty game's formula. Modern Warfare 2 will strive to separate itself from the previous game, with community manager Robert Bowling saying that the studio plans to create something special and unique.

"We’re not taking any pages out of World at War’s book," offers Bowling. "We’re crafting a special and unique experience for Modern Warfare 2 players that I don’t want to spoil too much.

"Definitive numbers like max level cap, complete weapon lists, and number of new perks is something I don’t want to ruin and save for when the player ranks up and sees they’re constantly receiving new rewards for it, whether that’s a new weapon, perk, killstreak unlock, or item for their callsign."

Good. I never liked World at War very much.

Good. World at War wanted to be CoD4 so bad, and was worse for it. 65 levels was bullshit. It was awful how they stretched shit out. There was nothing quite like leveling up and seeing that I unlocked a grand total of 3 challenges, instead of a perk or a new weapon.

Modern Warfare 2 cannot get here fast enough.

I only hope they copy one part that Treyarch put in, the local-play search option for multiplayer. Laggy games are just not fun.

Same boat as you Jim, WAW wasn't a bad game, but I did prefer COD4. COD4 was just better in every element, in my opinion. Nazi zombies didnt go anything for me either. WOOOOOOOOOOHHHHH Modern Warfare 2.

Im still going to hang on to WaW just for zombies. I challenge anyone to not enjoy themselves with a group of friends in either of the 4 maps.

I've always liked the Treyarch games multiplayer better (other than COD2, which will always be the best).

Big Red One was one of my favorite multiplayer games back in the day. Arcadey fun

I like COD4's single player more, but in my opinion, WAW had better maps, more realistic gunplay (ie skill, that FPS goons didn't want to adhere to), and I had more fun with it: it also had more extended replay value with Nazi Zombies.

In fact, I just played it on PC last night, and just got done doing some TD on 360 at the moment.

Great, even after playing the demo of WaW, I did not like the game at all, even in basic storytelling terms, COD4 beats WaW by a mile. However, I do hope they emulate a type of mode similar to Zombie mode, maybe endless terrorist mode?

Either way, good to know that MW2 will not be a big copy of MW, Infinity Ward makes great games anyway.

Wouldn't "borrowing a page from World At War's book" essentially just be borrowing a page from their own book, since WAW was nothing more than a re-skin of COD4?

Very good news. My fear for this game was that they would just skin it over again like what treyarch did with W@W. IW is better than that, it seems.

I find it kinda funny how any given Infinity Ward member will take a cheap shot at Treyarch when possible.

"I find it kinda funny how any given Infinity Ward member will take a cheap shot at Treyarch when possible." I find it unprofessional and disrespectful. All it does is breed a secret desire within me that MW2 fails. I can't help it, but IW are really acting with hubris, and I wouldn't mind seeing them fall on their faces a little bit.

I don't know. If I was IW, I'd be pissed of some scrub ass company was raking in off emulating a game I created. Sorry, I don't feel sorry for Treyarch. No dice.

Honestly if Treyarch hadn't have delivered World At War as Call of Duty 4 - IN THE PAST people would've bitched about how they separated themselves too much from the fantastic MF1. Treyarch were damned either way.

I'd hoped IW would have been the bigger man and not cheapshot them every chance they got. While I'm sure MF2 will be fantastic it would be amusing if it failed to live up to MF1.

Well, they're owned by Activision now, and I'm guessing that that means the Call of Duty brand belongs to the parent company. IW have just been rubbing me up the wrong way recently, and I happen think that World at War is a good game. It's not like Treyarch got given much of a choice around the matter, since they are also an Activision studio. If you want to blame anyone for milking the franchise, blame them.

Exactly! It's not the greatest of positions to be put in – having to do a follow up to one of the most popular, critically acclaimed FPSs of the last few years. The expectations heaped upon them were enormous and, let's face it, they were probably never going to live up; they're just not that good a studio. They're continually set up to fail as long as they're being compared to IW, and it's not really a fair comparison since IW are in a league of their own.

I agree. The game wasn't that bad at all. It was a less nub-friendly version of COD4, and since that's what attracted most people to Modern Warfare in the first place, it was doomed to fail.

Meh, I don't blame IW for "selling out" to Activision. The point of the business is to make money, and I doubt IW lost any money in the deal. But I understand why they would take the cheap shots at Treyarch, a company that shamelessly uses the Call of Duty series that IW built to rake in their money. It would be a different thing if they were making original games, but they are basically copying everything IW does. Seeing someone use my work to make huge amounts of money would piss me off too.

its a shame that some fans think that treyarch is a better developer. Cod4 was superior in every aspect other than nazi zombies which was fun but come on when you have IW 's cod4 blue print then you better add something extra.
IW is superior than treyarch and all of their products are superior as well. Any1 that disagrees is a hater.

Good, I hated WaW's multiplayer and single player. The multiplayer was ridiculously biased against newbies and the single player was melodramatic, straining to evoke the same sort of tension that Modern Warfare did.

lol @ the people "feeling bad" for Treyarch or siding with them because they're "the underdog"... the same company's whose greatest accomplishments and biggest contributions to gaming all revolve around and rely upon Infinity Ward's source.

Jeez, who fucking cares which company is better?
I played CoD4 and WaW about the same amount, which is to say I finished the single player on Vet and then played the multiplayer til I prestiged once and that was that.
CoD4 was the originator of perks and leveling (in the CoD series) and then WaW offered great map design, great weapon balance and no fucking helicopters for a better MP experience.

All power to IW for trying to make MW2 different, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Fuck off Jim, you should know better. Treyarch would have been killed by the fans if they did ANYTHING that was too different than COD4. People would have lost their shit, so they pretty much had to use the same engine (with some extras), but re-skinned for WW2.

All the people bitching about Treyarch can go fuck themselves. What Treyarch did was impressive - a fuck tonne of people still play WAW, that's a testament to the game they clearly put a shit load of effort into.

If you must compare WAW to COD4 then at least Treyarch released 3 amazing DLCs compared 1 average Infinity ward DLC.

One of the best thing about any of Jim's posts is how there are always 3-5 people who just attack him for having an opinion...

IW: We aren't just copying WAW.
Jim: Good I didn't like WAW.
Flamers: Fuck you Jim! WaW wasn't for noobs, you can go eat a dick and die!!!

I can imagine this tearing into his daily life....

Jim: I like bananas, but there is something about eating things that are colored yellow I just can't get into.
Flamers: Fuck you Jim! Yellow is awesome, Bananas are for fags, go stick that banana up your ass!

Even in his Batman review when he said he loved the game but didn't like collect-a-thons, there just had to be at least one person who responded with, "Jim, you don't need to collect the stuff, it's optional"... so, what you are saying is that it should be ommited from the review cause you don't need to do it? No! It should stay, because it is still in the game, and it is still a stupid throwback idea to the n64.

Where was I? Oh yeah, WaW wasn't THAT bad, even if it was a shameful cash in. It was a feat for Treyarch, because every other CoD cash in they did sucked ass. They DID just copy CoD4, but at least they copied a good game, since their previous, more original entries, were jokes.

Ranting so long I'm late for work.

I rather enjoyed them both a lot.

I do have to tip my hat off to Treyarch for making a very random mode that would seem very boring, but is a lot of fun.

It almost made me remember when I use to play a the challenges on Perfect dark.

as a PC owner I really like Infinity ward for making a great game.

as a wii owner I really hate Infinity ward for not even trying to port the game.

I understand that they were way to busy making a "gaming master piece" to care about a port to a heavily underpowered system, but it hurt a little.

As a PC owner Treyarch is cool and they really tried their best to make a new COD game after the "best" one, and I think they did a splendid job for the amount of expectations they had.

As a wii owner I like Treyarch for porting WOW on the wii, it was not perfect but at least they put some descent effort in reaching into a spot that some fancy developers would not. Though I do find it inexcusable to not have CTF matches; I mean its 2008 , even quake has CTF. AND also where the **** is Nazi zombie mode?

but it is not a perfect world, and it shouldn't be.

The sad thing is, Treyarch fixed a few things IW had as an oversight in COD4, such as grenade launcher abuse, constant grenade spamming (by lowering frags from 3 to 2) and grenades that could fly great heights and kill you.unexpectedly), They even fixed Martyrdom issues by introducing Toss Back.

I really wish IW would not be so high-and-mighty about themselves and at least look at what the supposed "red-headed stepchild of COD" did to fix their mistakes in the first place. COD4 was great, yes, but WAW was at least up to par.

You guys have to remember that both IW and Treyarch work for Activision. That being said, Treyarch did exactly what Activision wanted, "clone CoD4". They put there own twist on things, like by adding the Zombie mode, and improved upon several things like grenade spamming in MP, improved maps, excellent DLC, spawn toobing in S&D, and addressed modded controles and fixed known glitches in a timely manner. At the same time, they failed on a few things, like connecting parties to the game lobby, hit detection problems, re-spawning points, over use of grenades in SP, checkpoints in SP, Tanks (at least they removed them from HC), etc.

In all fairness, I thought Treyarch did a great job with the game and I hope that this will be a sign of things to come from them in the future.

BTW....Does anyone else hate those damn target/bomb icons that always seem to be in the way.

No. Technically, Infinity Ward did not lead mw2 to their downfall. Activision cared about the money and forced iw to be secured within the contract. because of the contract, iw is stuck to one place. however, treyarch had none of these problems and mw2 was literally a doormat for treyarch to create a better game. howvever, treyarch failed on their part and were not able to create something more better than their doormat.

tl:dr treyarch failed, iw is still superior even though theyre not even part of cod. treyarch tries so fucking hard but they are still inferior. thats how much they suck
