Modern Warfare 2 is all 'f*ck realism, yo' photo

In a real-life war situation, you can't absorb several bullets, then hide behind a wall and suddenly feel better. It's a good thing, then, that Infinity Ward isn't striving for a real-life war situation in Modern Warfare 2, putting the focus on being "authentic" as opposed to "realistic." Yes, my son, there is a difference.

"We go for authenticity not realism," states IW's Vince Zampella. "We're not making a sim, we're making entertainment. We want it to look real like an action movie. You see a guy in an action movie, what he does is a little over the top. It makes for a great movie."

Zampella uses this to explain why there are gun sentries with laser sights that detect movement in the game. It's not exactly true to life, but it's believable within the game's context and makes for a more entertaining game. He also touches upon other details in his Official PlayStation Magazine interview, such as the more open-world areas of the game.

"We do it where it fits and doesn't make the game worse. There isn't any mandate that every level has to be a wide open sandbox. There are certain levels like this where it fits naturally."

Modern Warfare 2 is shaping up very nicely indeed and should definitely own the Xbox Live and PSN servers when it releases at the end of the year. It's interesting that so much focus is being put on the single-player this time, especially when most people are planning to rack up their perks rather than take on the campaign mode.

All I care about is MW2 being fun to play like MW1. Loving what I've seen so far.

Authentic?

From a game what has the Russians using the wrong gun?
Thats not Authentic.

Nor is having 1 or 2 people do every single thing in the situation like that they're in .

Soap, You take point, Soap, You go a clear that house, Soap, Suck my Dick.

These guys don't want to mention anything like Authenticity or Realism when games like ArmA2 and OFP2 are close to release.

They should shut the hell up and market it as the arcadey shooter it is, Why bullshit to try and lure a crowd that won't take the bait?

Fact: Russian's hands melt upon touching a gun that is not Russian-made.

Yeah, it's not authentic or realistic - but it wouldn't be as fun that way. I'm glad that Infinity ward are just making a fun game, instead of a "realistic game". Although I hope they don't take it TOO over the top (even though MW1 was pretty bloody over-the-top in some instances (like the entire "one shot one kill" mission).

At the very least, I hope they don't have too many "speeding on a snow mobile shooting enemies "gangsta" style" moments. That feels more like a steven segal movie. And I don't want to play a steven segal movie, as uh, interesting as that might be.

As long as the game is fun, I don't care how authentic or real it is. And I'm very happy that they are putting more emphasis on the single-player this time, as the SP in MW1 was very entertaining (Lots of amazing moments = Win).

While the snowmobile action was pretty hokey I'm glad IW said Modern Warfare 2 was akin to an action movie because that's precisely what I'm looking forward to.

MW2 is more like Time Crisis 4, but as long as its fun, it'll be worth it.

That's not really that weird. The single player campaign in the first Modern Warfare was fantastic, I am not surprised that they're trying to make another great single player experience, even if 95% of the time most people spend with the game is in the multiplayer.

Realistic games are pretty hard and not really fun. Just play Ostfront and you'll get the idea.
