Modern Warfare 2 hits 25m players, DLC news this week photo

As revealed in a tweet by Infinity Ward's own Robert Bowling, Modern Warfare 2 has surpassed the 25 million unique online players mark. That figure includes all three platforms, with Xbox 360 leading the way, followed by PlayStation 3, and then PC.

There's a theory going around that says some people only purchase videogames from established franchises and avoid new intellectual properties at all costs. MW2 just proved it right -- the direct follow-up is "dominating COD4's numbers," according to Bowling.

The last bit of news comes in the form of a tease: we are told to expect information about the first add-on pack (release date, possibly more) during this week. Oh hai, GDC! Forgot you were going on this week.

What in the fuck's name kind of logic is that? I'm sorry, but that needs to be said.
And ineffectual story is ineffectual. MW2 is honestly a humongous shitpile.

hype really, mw2 has the rep of the greatest shooter in existance, despite the fact it has balance issues up the ass.the fact is that's what the common publics(see: people who believe anything there told and haven't researched a damn thing in their lives) belief of this game is.

We officially live in a age where hype determines wether a game is good or not and if or if not it's gonna sell, creativity and quality have taken a back seat.

I guess it's cool to hate on this game now, but I've been enjoying it, and am excited for more maps.
I'm surprised this is coming out now, what with the whole IW/Activision fiasco.

They're going to announce what was leaked: Crash, Overgrown and three new maps

They need to release a map pack with all of the maps from COD4, if not just be sure to include Broadcast and Showdown in the next one.

@Hardock: Like every reviewer for some dumbass reason gave the game 9.5 scores, instead of what the thing really deserved which was a 5. And if they would have grown some balls and reviewed the pc version, that version would have gotten a 2. Most people go by what critics tell them is good sometimes, if like every fucking reviewer gives this game a good score, even though it has balance issues, and the most glitches I've ever seen, what are people suppose to think, it sucks. No they think its good, then they go out and buy it, then they realized it sucked, then wonder wtf the critics were thinking.

rant done :).

I'm sure the fact that MW2 bought a shit ton of adspace on every reviewer's website didn't help, either. I agree 100%, though.

To be completely honest, I'm perfectly happy with Modern Warfare 2. I expected an exhilarating single-player campaign with some story-related problems, and a bunch of bite-size fun co-op missions to help pad out the experience. The multiplayer was something to play from time to time on the side, and for the most part its been perfectly enjoyable. Maybe if I spent more time on it the flaws would be made clearer, but with all the patches up, at least on the 360 version, the game is fine for me.

I don't play military shooters all that often, and maybe the people who do have found a better game in BC2. But for the time being, MW2 fits my requirements.

@Spaz: Don't forget personal reviews too. One big reason why the game sold so well was word-of-mouth, namely "Hey man, I have this game, you should get it too so we can play together." I can't speak but I think a lot of the sales were due to this alone. And the reason why people say it's hot shit? If you were one of those people who bought the game just to play with friends and you wound up not liking it, you'd probably keep your mouth shut out of fear of your friends ridiculing you, or failing that, you'd delude yourself so as to think it was a smart purchase on your part, blah blah blah.

Of course I could be wrong, but it's one way to look at it.

Whoa whoa whoa who said MW2 was a good game? Were you dignosed with brain trauma as a child or have a mental disease? Last time I checked its been riddled with problems internally as well as externally with developer/publisher relations.

This game is only popular because its a heavy medium for the generation. Its a game where newbs can run and gun to their hearts conetent and be good at it. "OMG SOMETHING MOVED KILL IT". People don't move that quickly in real life or run that silly. You run like you have to either A) Poop or B) Just realized Anal beads don't feel good and you must get them out ASAP.

Oh videogames. When will you make a shooter with hitboxes in hitboxes? Hit in the knee, limp/can't walk/crawl. Hit in the chest with a sniper bullet, 1 shot kill. Headshots don't matter bro if you get hit with a Barret .50. Its anti-material brah. You wouldn't exist. People would think Bill Cosby showed up and had a jello party from all the pink/red mush all over the place.

COD4 was one of the best console shooters ever. Period. No debate. MW2 was mediocrity, at its finest. And I'm not just talking single player. As one of those lame 10th level prestige golden cross losers myself, I can honestly say I hate MW2 with a passion compared to the old game. Yes, MW2 is a "good" and "decent" game. But...such a let down on so many levels from balancing, to glitches. I understand Hardcock is defending what is essentially the Backstreet Boys or NSYNC of gaming. It is a very popular game because it is super accessible and the first one was down right goddamn amazing. MW2 behaves like HALO3 on crack cocaine and red bull. That is the audience now. I would like to see percentage figures for how many people who put 100+ hours into the first one actually think the second is superior. How many true, hardcore players are out there? I've been playing both PC and Console shooters since 64. Who else played tournies in Day of Defeat for PC? Now that was an amazing game. The people speaking out against MW2 are possibly fanboys of other shooters, but also possibly people who loved the first game so much that it pained them to see the son become such a miserable bastard compared to the father. People like myself.

"BF:BC2 will never approach these numbers. Someone explain to me why more players play MW2 than BF:BC2 if battlefield is the better game?"

Remember. If it ain't popular, it ain't shit. Psychonauts? Nah that game sucked cocks. Know what was wayyy wayyy better? Like, one of the bestest games of all time? Wii Sports. Why? Because more people play Wii Sports than play COD MW2! AMIRITTEEE???

Interesting to hear the unique user count. Also, Devore's theory is [s]true. People avoid new IP like the plague because reviewers are a terrible source by which to determine how fun a game is and like to know that the game is franchise worthy[/s] lunacy. People don't avoid new IP's like the plague, it's only the hardcore that do that. How the heck did Just Dance sell 1.81 million copies? and then there is Wii Sports, Pokemon Red and Blue, and Wii Fit?

Not only that, but what kind of IDIOT journalist would consider Call of Duty: Modern Warefare a new IP? Modern Warfare was a sequel to Call of Duty 3; it's about as new an IP as Super Mario Galaxy!

I remember a time in the early 90's where everything was mellow, and fanboys suffered in silence. When they learned to open their mouths was the day that the gaming community looked back and saw what we had become.

The golden years are yet to come, but will the fanboys blockade it's arrival?

This site doesn't use html codes? Darn it.

The point is, you have to completely ignore Call of Duty 1, 2, and 3 and Wii Sports for Devore's comment; that people avoid new IP, to make any sense.

Incidently, # of gamer tags and # of sales are different; how many copies have they sold?

Indeed. Despite some of the glitches that people have exploited (the care package one was the one I had the most problem with, just stopped playing for a couple days then came back on when it was fixed) I've quite enjoyed my time with MW2. Can't wait until the new maps are released. :D

Well, you can call it a sequel to which ever Call of Duty you want VGFreak, but Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare WAS a sequel to Call of Duty 3.

Heck, you could even blame Call of Duty 3 for Modern Warfare not selling better, but no amount of us squabbling about semantics will change the fact that Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4 is a sequel to Treyarch's Call of Duty 3. And because it is a Call of Duty, it is complete fallacy to call Call of Duty 4 an original IP, no matter how much you like the Modern Warfare name.

@ Spiffy

That's easy. Call of Duty is Call of Duty. We buy it because we love Call of Duty, and want a game with Call of Duty in it. We buy Spiderman and Batman because we love Spiderman and Batman, and we want content with Spiderman and Batman in it.

It's a very hard pill to swallow, but bad game that sells well isn't a bad game. It is a game that delivers a customer experience worth paying for. Just Dance is a good game, whether you personally like it or not, because it sold millions on word of mouth, delivering content that was highly demanded. and Modern Warfare created a demand for Modern Warfare 2 content. Give them what they want, and no matter how bad you think the game is, the game is good because it fills the customer's needs.

Bad Company 2 could be big. However, it will take time for any game that doesn't have well known content behind it to accelerated. Heck, it took pokemon months for Red and Blue to get to the 10 million marks respectively, because the audience had to learn by word of mouth that the game had content the audience wanted. And just because Bad Company 2 is technically better, doesn't mean that Bad Company 2 has superior content.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: if MW2 had been released with little/no hype by some no-name developer and a more likeable publisher, it wouldn't have had half this much hatred directed at it. It's sad, really.

Now, don't get me wrong; I LOVE Battlefield. Much more than I do CoD, in fact (well, the multiplayer, anyway). But I feel like a lot (not all) of the Battlefield love on this site comes purely from people who want nothing more than for it to "beat" MW2, whatever the fuck that means (since the two games simply cannot co-exist with the same fans, after all)...

It's the casuals.

They buy a FIFA or Madden Game every year and a CoD game whenever it comes out. They maybe have a copy of Guitar Hero knocking about. Now i don't think any less of them, but they do really fuck up the impression that sales give publishers.

CoD is an easy, rewarding (too rewarding), pick-up-and-play game that all of your friends were playing around launch. It appeals to some hardcore gamers who were hoping it would be more like the last one, it appeals to casuals who heard about the last one, or the hype for this one, either way it sold left, right and centre.

Problem is once most of "us" (read: gameblog dwelling, hard to please gamers) realised how broken it was - seems to be an average of one prestige and a couple of ranks - we got sick and tired of it, realised that rather than the balance from the last one it had a whole pile of shit thrown in there without consideration of how it works or how it can be taken advantage of.

Plus glitches.

Plus a childish community.

Plus lag.

Did i mention glitches.

Non-recoil weapons.

Auto-aim up the arse.

Laser perfect accuracy.

Small maps with too many players, piss poor spawning, uninteresting game types.

etc etc etc.

It was OK for a little while, you could ignore the glitches and mute the kids, and sometimes playing round after round after round after round caring about nothing other than your personal score and your next killstreak reward was kinda fun, but it just didn't last for long.

In my personal opinion, Battlefield and MAG both piss all over MW2, MAG isn't as pretty but it's a vast, varied war not a hectic little deathmatch, layers of command and various working strategies. Battlefield i think LOOKS EVEN BETTER than CoD, and plays better to, it's bigger, more varied, has the whole dynamic objective based gameplay, extremely realistic weapons/accuracy/sound and where MAG and BF:BC2 take it from CoD easily is the community, more mature, no shouting and squeeling and insulting, just gamers, talking game and general banter.

Lovely.

I traded in Modern Borefare 2 for Heavy Rain and I'm so glad i did. Hadn't touched it since I got MAG.

I played ths crap outta MW2 for the first 2 months. I didnt own a console during the COD4 era so i had nothing to base my need to play MW2 on other tha a few people i know saying i should get it so we could play it together. FOr that first month i had to deal with super sprinting knife weilding jackasses, Javelin asshats and people spamming care packages. I never once felt lag in the game, and i played a lot. but what really turned me off from MW2 was the term HOST MIGRATING. It happened in almost every match, and many times during this process it would just disconnect everyone. (this is probably a lag thing so i guess i did feel lag) but all in all i felt i got my 60 dollars worth of entertainment out of it. I bought a PS3 since then and now im on to MAG and waiting for BFBC2 to drop in price. :)
