Modern Warfare 2 has 'lost brand awareness' without CoD name photo

Tracking firm OTX is claiming that it's not just the Call of Duty name that Infinity Ward has lost with its upcoming Modern Warfare 2. According to research, the title drop has also resulted in a loss of brand awareness, with the game now falling from the radar of 20% of American consumers.

"Up until the beginning of May, OTX had been tracking the title as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. More specifically, we asked a representative group of gamers in the U.S. whether or not they had heard of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. At that time, approximately 40 percent of all gamers in the U.S. claimed that they had heard of this title," explains OTX.

"However, once it became clear that Activision was positioning the title as Modern Warfare 2, OTX removed Call of Duty from the consumer survey, and the awareness levels dropped to 20 percent. In other words, the Call of Duty brand association essentially doubles the awareness for the game. That is quite a remarkable statistic."

I can certainly see why the decision was made to drop the CoD moniker. After all, it looks better for a publisher to have two huge shooter franchises rather than just one, and it's good to differentiate between the work of Infinity Ward and Treyarch. Of course, it now looks as if evil publisher Activision will have to market Modern Warfare 2 like never before if it hopes to be as successful without the CoD name backing it up.

If one thing Activision is good at (apart from being evil), it's marketing. I'm fairly certain MW2 will get its own brand awareness soon enough.

Call of Duty 6: Modern Warfare 2. Yeah I'll take MW2 instead.

If anything, Modern Warfare 2 will spread in the same manner that CoD4 did: through word of mouth. I wasn't at all interested in the title until 90% of the people on my friend list were playing it, and 50% of the people on this website were talking about it, even months after release. I'm sure even people who didn't realize this is from the Call of Duty pedigree will eventually get hooked into it by their more in-the-know friends, and then they'll realize what it is.

I'm pretty sure that when they start with heavy advertisement people will know it's the sequel to a CoD game. Although I'm in the UK and my comments are probably redundant as your talking about a US survey, the marketing was insane for the first Modern Warfare. And considering the sales the first achieved I'm sure the devil company know exactly what they are doing, get the core mad for it then go after the rest of the market.
I expect sales figures to be insane, as you said Acti-bastards certainly know how to market a game.
And lets face it, it's gonna rock (poor choice of word but you know what I mean!)

wait... I am the moron... my last comment really didn't make much sense.

Regardless of my previous stupidity, I refuse to buy into this. You really think dropping COD will hurt sales? Like dexter said... word of mouth will spread quickly.

If I was IW, I would want to separate myself from Treyarch too...IW is superior to Treyarch in every way. Regardless of how it's branded, the buzz around its release and subsequent good reviews (is there any way MW2 is NOT gonna pwn face?) will take care of any "brand awareness" concerns.

MW2, whatever they want to call it, is gonna sell like hot cakes with crack cocaine on top.

.. Yeah, people got used to saying "COD#"... I even often took the lazy route of calling COD:World at War simply COD5... it's just easier (though yeah, people corrected me like it was blasphemy or something!)

I think in the long run, they are smart to differentiate the COD series from the MW series - they really are different games (and frankly I would only want to buy the Infinity Ward series anyways as I was very disappointed with World at War game).

... it won't take people long to catch on.

"At that time, approximately 40 percent of all gamers in the U.S. claimed that they had heard of this title"

All gamers in the U.S.? Really? Nobody asked me. How big is this "representative group of gamers in the U.S." and how were they chosen? How is all this tracked?

Sorry, my knee-jerk reaction is to be skeptical of weird statistics offered by companies with acronyms for their names.

I'm really happy that MW separeted itself from the CoD franchise.
And that research that they run was BIAS.

Yeah, I'm going to have to go along with Char Aznables comment. Only 40% of GAMERS had heard of Call of Duty? Pretty sure even my mum knows what COD is. Next they'll be saying only 40% of Xbox owners have heard of Halo.

I guess we're gonna have to go with "Em-Dub-Two" which is only *one* syllable longer than CoD4 or CoD5, right?

Lord help us when we reach CoD7!

Where's the other side of this debate? Obviously more people have heard of CoD than MW, it's been around way longer. Numbers at the end don't matter to a survey of all gamers, which necessarily must include casual gamers, they'll just respond to whether they're aware of the series.

Then everyone in the destructoid comments insults them.

@whowhatwherehow, your mum only knows about CoD because you throw internet sensation hissy fits when she cancels your live account.

I hate to break the chain here, but I go to a university where... oh I don't know about 90% of the fucking student body talks about COD4 (not WaW, COD4) online (among other games).

You know how annoying it is hearing a bunch of meathead jocks talk about noobs using juggers at the local pub!?

No, this game is gonna sell like fucking gangbusters, it's gonna slap everyone in the face with a meaty cock and ALL OF US are gonna want it.

Haha, meat.

As long as they advertise the game well to get the point across that Modern Warfare 2 is Call of Duty people will buy it.
Most PS3, 360, and PC owners will have this game in their game collection.
