Modern Warfare 2 gets dedicated servers via hack photo

Yup. You read that right. Modern Warfare 2 PC now has dedicated servers.

Wait, PC gamers! Before you send Bobby Kotick a thank you letter, know that it wasn't they who did it, but rather the gamers who took Infinity Ward and Activition's attempts to lock down the game as a challenge. And bring it those gamers did, managing to hack in the developer console and enable the ability to set up dedicated servers. Keep in mind, the game hasn't even been out a week.

Perhaps some of the boycotters caught playing the game were not being hypocrites, but rather hard at work turning the highest-profile shafting of PC gamers right around, as the video below might demonstrate.

Of course, the darker side to all this newfound freedom is the ability to use it to cheat, and the servers that have been set up so far are all "ranked" and still considered "legal" by IWNet, Modern Warfare 2's console-esque matchmaking service.

Folks who like their games in "vanilla" flavor only shouldn't despair though. After all, MW2 uses anti-cheating tech from Valve, who, if nothing else, are very, very aware of what PC gamers can do, and how to deal with them.

That said, it's just a matter of time until they the first thing they did was mod it so that you can lean again.

[Thanks to Jetsetlemming for the tip!]

While this is great news; I wonder if Activision wil pull bullshit and shut them to later cash in them.

Amusing... this is why I love PC gaming above all the other reasons, the user can tailor the experience to his desire, even if the developer didn't intend for it.

That said, with VAC on the case and the snooty way IW has been talking lately about playing it their way, I wouldn't be surprised to see this get shut down and some VAC bans handed out.

For a little while anyway, until they figure it out again.

I love PC gaming for things like this.

Also I'd love to see if IW/Activison bans these wonderful individuals before they ban the slew of aimbot and host lag cheaters that are running around all powerful thanks to IW removing the ability to kick people. You know, just to cement them full in the camp of incompetence.

Actually I am kind of worried. Would this start a mess between Valve and Activision? Because it would be a strange battle between people I fucking love and people I wreckingly hate.

BUT IT ISN'T BALANCED FOR LEAN! THIS WILL RUIN THE GAME COMPLETELY!

Valve won't do anything about blocking these servers with VAC - they have been known to support this kind of thing. Then again, they might be pressured by IW and EVIL PUBLISHER ACTIVISION to do something.

I fail to see the fun in cheating?! - apart from the whole nerd ego thing.

Cheats got boring at about age 12. - Although saying that my 38 year old brother in law came to a friends while i was there with a list of GTA cheat written down, I don't get it myself. play the game, unlock the cool stuff, who needs a flying tank?

Awesome-o! Remember that super lucky throwing knife kill?

I just did something similar in my lunch break, throw and hope, over a building in Quarry, bing - KILL! Fucking win! - Been trying for days....

Just wish it had been a game winning kill replay. unfortunately not, only one person got to watch the sick killcam and witness my guess work skillz!

Throwing knife = favourite weapon now.

@ sexual

they're not actually cheating since it's available to everyone. It's like playing scouts and knives, it's just fun :|

The point of dedicated servers is that they are a lot less laggy and admins can deal with rampant cheating (something IWnet can apparently not do, at all).

@ kimochi - why would they do that? people who modded their console thoroughly deserve it ;p

It was also hacked to allow online play (unlimited, with some custom modifications) on IW.net, though IW should fix that pretty soon.

@ Not cheating guys - i'm not saying that these guys are cheating - good on them for dedicating the servers!

But in general, why do people even bother cheating?

it's one thing to say, i'm the bollocks at MW2, it's another to say i cheat and pwn people on MW2.

Like i say as a little kid, struggling on CS, i'd change my reticule to a colour changing crosshair, helped to snipe with a desert eagle, but once I got past 12 I realised that games are designed to be played as they are, cheating is silly.

Dude, I was being facetious when I wrote that.

They already added lean back in, right after they recovered the console.

They haven't gotten true dedis up yet. What they have are games where they managed to mess with the settings. True dedis with large numbers of players are something the modders are working on, according to their posts on IW's forums. Good on them too. Silly shafting of PC gamers. How did they not think people would try and circumvent IWNet? It sucks. People don't like playing things that suck.

Heh, no surprise as IW's/Activision's attitude about the whole thing was just a challenge. Doubt any hosting service with a good connection will offer this though, but at least it's a slap back against cutting back on features while still charging more.

PC MW2 < Console MW2

Multiply both sides by -1.

-PC MW 2 > -Console MW2

Take the "-" off when nobody's looking.

PC MW 2 > Console MW2

Yay.

You know what the best part of this is? People with pirated versions and fake cd keys can play on dedicated servers now, as opposed to if they had it in the box in the first place.

WOOT.

Where are all the IW apologists saying that dedicated servers aren't the way the game was meant to be played because they're not a part of IW's "vision"? I seemed to hear that a lot when people complained about the lack of dedicated servers, but right now people seem pretty happy that they've been hacked into the game.

I've had one disconnection and one match with too much lag to play, but im not above saying that I am on the lower spectrum of "average" or worst: I honestly wouldn't do much better on 50ms pings that I do on 150 right now.

However I wish IW would just see reason and add a patch to use dedicated and shut up everybody already.
