Modern Warfare 2 enjoys huge UK price hike, costs 54.99 photo

It's been a while since I lived in England now, but I still remember how annoying it was to spend £49.99 on a brand new videogame. It looked like things would calm down as I was leaving, with a lot of new games retailing for £39.99. However, if Activision's shocking price hike for Modern Warfare 2 is any indicator, it looks like the recession is giving publishers a license to gouge.

Amazingly, Modern Warfare 2 is going to sell for the hefty price of £54.99! The worst of it is that this is expected to be the first of many videogame price hikes across the UK, with other publishers ready to follow Activision's lead and make fifty-five quid an official price point.

"Exchange rates between the Euro and the pound are making it very difficult for publishers to show an acceptable operating margin in the UK," explains THQ man Ian Curran, apparently speaking in Activision's place. "You can’t continue to trade as normal when the biggest territory in Europe has seen cost of goods increase by 30 per cent due to the strengthening of the Euro. Publishers somehow need to offset this drastic increase in costs. I’m not surprised to see the SRP go up and I feel this will continue across more key titles."

Apparently, UK retailers were prepared for this, claiming that publishers have been "hammered" by the UK economy for quite some time. Meanwhile, Electronic Arts has stated officially that it has no plans to change its own prices, so that's something.

"Will this affect consumers? I don’t think so," says one anonymous UK publisher. "If a title is this good, will they spend an extra £5? Of course. You can’t blame Activision. They’re entitled to do this – they’ve invested huge amounts."

What do you think? Will you will be buying Modern Warfare 2 for the high, high price of £54.99, or would you rather pay your rent that month?

I'm just going to wait for it to drop to £40 and buy it from Blockbuster or somewhere so Activision don't get any money.

Fuck that shit. This is to do with Activision loving money, not the recession. In any climate they could sell the game at that price because they know that a lot of people have already got a stake in it from MW1 and a huge amount of people will cross over.

A few months ago I was buying ps3 and 360 titles at 30 quids. Also Activision also like to give the retail console price for MW1 on steam in every country.

It's a surprising turn from EA though, they've clearly learnt not to be as fucking greedy.

Where do you live? Wanna trade places? God, some guys think we all live in a vacation resort. Every place you visit as a tourist, if you keep to the main attractions you are most likely to be shielded of the crapshit that dwells on the place. Think about it.

Also, I do all my buying trough eBay, since buying here in Brazil it would be ridiculous. Wouldn't it be better if the European gamers did the same? Most of my PS3 games come from Asia. I usually pay around 50 US dollars, shipping included. Could someone explain to me why UK gamers don't do the same?

The value of the Pound has actually been going back up over the last few months. It went from a low of $1.40 to £1 and currently stands at around $1.64 to £1.

Activision are greedy fucks who just wish they were making £2 to £1 like they were last year.

No sale. Simple as. Having said that, let's see what the online retailers can do to drive the price down. And does Activision region lock 360 games?

Refusing to buy this now. Activision are making the UK it's btich. Tony Hawks, DJ Hero, Guitar Hero and now this. I'll just get Borderlands and Brutal Legend or Bayonetta or something for £25 cheaper from ASDA.

Move to Australia, come and play 119.95 for a Premium Title such as Fallout 3 on release, or 109.95 for Dragon Age Origins...but $100 is usually the common price for a console release. PC is $10 cheaper.

At least some retailers here do offer big discounts so you can pick up new titles on relese from 79 - 90 dollars.

Oh and do you want those Spiffy Collecters Editions? 130+ for them.

Im paying 149.95 for the Black Edition of AC2. I hate this country sometimes.

It sucks if you live in england. True. Don't like it? Leave. I did.

You know what else sucks? Being an american company and selling products in england. There are more costs than you'd think. I run my own business and have UK clients. In bank fees alone, it sucks. The pound is not as strong as it was (despite the slight recent recovery), making UK sales less attractive than they used to be.

Perhaps they are happier selling a smaller amount in the UK and seeing a higher profit margin on each unit sold. You can't blame them for that.

The old price for new games in pounds converted to CAD and USD.
50 GBP -> 91.9254 CAD

The price for new games in Australia converted to CAD and USD.
110 AUD -> 98.8624 CAD

Yeah, this decision for the increase just simply doesn't make sense.
It was already sitting at an unreasonable price point before this...

Thieving bastards. I'll just rent it instead. There's absolutely no way they wouldn't turn a massive profit at the normal price, this is just Activision being greedy cunts.

The industry just keeps on raping its customers, unfortunately there are enough mugs out there who will keep taking it in the ass until they are paying £100 for a game that'll only work for a fortnight.

It's a shame that this probably won't affect the overall sales of the game. People will just complain about why their butts are so sore while they hand over their debit cards.

Fucking Activision being greedy bastards. Hopefully retailers will step in and drop the shop floor price to the normal price like when Rock Band first came out.

Game add a couple of quid as what I call "GAME Tax".
I guess I pay more to be bugged by an arsehole who knows jack shit every time I enter.

I've still yet to see the hardened edition on a pre order site. because i was exspecting that to be £59.99 the same as batman arkham asylum collectors edition. the irony is if it IS 60 quid i'ld go the extra 20 quid rather than 15 for regular.

Also some places online are at pre-order price only of £44.99 if anyones looking to save something on regular editions at play.com

@ HiddenAHB, What in the name of Christ on a mountain are you doing paying for what amounts to $120 per game. Ladies and gentlemen, hardcore still exists, and its name is The Gamers of Sao Paolo.
Next, just did the conversion & it amounts to around $90. I really can't think of anything to say to that. Mr Kotick needs to have his balls ripped off by one of those metal cases the Hardened Edition comes in- in the dark so he can put to good use those night visions goggles in the Prestige Ed. while a bunch of angry Brits. mint this guys nuts in exactly 55quid worth of gold. @CBunn calm down! I was being facetious. I'm aware that not everywhere in Brazil is like Samba de Amigo.

UK consumers can't just buy games from the US as they are region locked. If you buy your console from the UK then you can only play UK games, unless you chip it, but that voids the warranty.

You can import a console as well, but due to shipping costs and the fact VAT isn't put on until it arrives in the country you're nearly always hit with a substantial bill and rarely get a saving. Plus, if anything goes wrong with a game or a console you don't have any UK buyer protection, you would have to return it to the country of origin.

Exchange rates are such a load of wank. In Australia the exchange rate was up to 97c to the dollar at one point, and you know how much GTA IV cost? AU$120. RE4 on the Wii? AU$100.

Publishers only get about one dollar in profit for each unit sold at $60.

Each territory they sell in will incur region specific increased distribution, tax and legal costs. There is a very real possibility that they absolutely have to raise the price in order to make any profit out of the UK without it going to English lawyers, retailers, distributors and of course, the freaking UK government.

Honestly, if you have a problem with the price in your country, your anger is probably better vented at your countries economic system than activision.

Hell, due to inflation alone after four years the price SHOULD go up.

After playing Call of Duty 3, and realising that I was pretty much done with the whole shooting germans in the face thing, I made a pact that I would never buy/play/eat/sell/gift another COD game again.

I popped £36 on Prototype on the day of release and that was a pretty rare thing for me to do. I'm presently flipping it on eBay, and if I get £25 back, then I think that's value for money.

If game companies think they can't start ramping the RRP up to backintheday greyimport prices that were common for SNES, they can find a nice sharp stick to slide down.

I've just stuck about 10 games on my Lovefilm rental list, and I don't intend to buy another game now until I've got a job.

To be clear, we are talking about a 'console' game costing $90 dollars in England.
RE- current conversion rate for GBP is .66@ - meaning your 100 dollars turns into only 66 dollars of purchasing power.

That because over 8 years of Bush Treasury trying to hide the fact that we were in a recession (for the past 8 years) by simply dropping the value of the dollar to 50 cents [Euros/ to Dollars](which makes US goods 'seem' cheaper to the rest of the world - and conversely makes world goods twice as expensive to US purchasers.

For example Gasoline going from 1 dollar, to 3 dollars. You might say, but that is a tripling, not a doubling. And you are correct, the extra dollar is basically a 'service fee' that traders and speculators were able to steal from consumers.

The important point is that the value of gasoline is still about a dollar.
Supply didn't actually change, and neither did demand.
All that changed was exchange arbitrage and speculation costs blossomed like cancer. Thanks again Wall Street, ps. let me bail you out.

Which also illustrates how massively rigged, irrational, and inefficient unregulated markets are (commonly referred to in propaganda a 'free' markets). 'Free markets' mean, possible for corporations to create monopoly and commit fraud without legal consequences. Monopoly of course being the opposite of capitalism, is it's self as much a tyranny as any example of dictatorship you might name.

Dictatorship, monopoly and war (and the corresponding possibility for service delivery disruption) is a great threat to use to extort money from consumers. Which explains why corporations, and the nation states they control through campaign contributions and mass media use these methods to attack and impoverish their internal populations with such consistency.

We are all bred for slaughter like farm animals, with notions like 'free markets'. Enjoy playing with your pop pop, bang bang game.
