Modern Warfare 2 becomes Britain's biggest selling game photo

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is now the UK's biggest selling game of all time, according to the holy keeper of numbers, Chart-Track. The previous title holder was Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training.

It took Modern Warfare 2 forty-one weeks to achieve this milestone, and only three of those weeks have seen the game outside of the top ten. Chart-Track didn't have any official sales numbers to hand, but it's doubtless that evil publisher Activision will be along later with the figures and the backslapping.

Modern Warfare 2 is kind of a big deal, I hear.

Deservedly so. Its not often a game identifies its demographic so well, then smacks them in the face with such fun frantic multiplayer. The singleplayer could do with being far less convoluted but the setpieces were outstanding.

This really makes me wonder how CoD: Black Ops is going to do come November. Are people going to want to invest in another $60 game come release, giving up their old levels and customizations for something new? Or are they going to stick with what they know?

hopefully, Black Ops will take MW2 out of that place, it doesn't deserve it

I'm a little disappointed that this article wasn't accompanied by the usual 'British thugs' type of picture.

Then again...maybe it is...

In the UK playing as terrorists is totally fine as long as they're not using the groups real names.

That brain training game didn't work out very well for them, did it?

The fuck? This game wasn't even all that great.

Look, Britain, just because you gave us The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Keeley Hazell doesn't mean you can pull shit like this.

I'm not surprised. If there's anything, in my view, that the constant UK Charts updates on Dtoid have shown me, it's that UK players have little to no taste for good games.

And I'm guessing around 5 percent of players understood the story. One of my thick clod mates said;

"wot????? why are the Russians launching a nuclear weapon to explode above America, see? Why would they do that? Then why did General Shepherd kill you in the game, see?"

honestly what a fucking spastic

Thus Britain proves Activision right - you will in fact gladly pay an inflated price for no good reason. Enjoy it being a permanent thing and don't forget you did it to yourselves!

@calamity Jane.

Do you think its any different where you are from? Do you not think this game is any less popular in your neck of the woods?

Not liking the game is fine, that's your call and no one can say you are wrong but stereotyping and hating the players is just straight up dumb.

That's because gamerd are split between four distinct eschelons:

1.) Kids
2.) Casuals
3.) Heavy Single-Title
4.) Hardcore

The area where the most people reside is the third, with folks only playing CoD/Madden/FIFA/Final Fantasy/etc. They live and die by one franchise alone, and forsake all othersalong the way for whatever reason the use to justify only playing one specific title.

Kids play kids' games.

Casuals play Bejeweled, FarmVille and other time-wasters, usually free.

Hardcores are the ones who buy and play games for the fact that they are there to play and experience, and usually play things that would normally pass other groups by for being something new and different, and usually of far superior quality to what the other groups would spend playing endlessly.

The problem is, true hardcores are the minority by a large degree. This is why people give you quizzical looks when you mention Symphony Of The Night or Okami.

@bakewell

I wasnt talking about my personal opinion regarding the game or implying that I had a problem with its fans in general.
My point was that Activision charged more money in Britain for this title for *no reason* other than it thought it could get away with it. They obviously did and, on the back of this success, they will obviously do it again (and as many times as possible). British gamers, media etc. and whatever didnt speak out or speak up with their wallets, and they have only themselves to blame next time. That was my point.

I didnt stereotype anyone.
Reading for content is important.

If people weren't getting what they believe to be value for money they wouldn't be laying down the pounds,

Your idea of worth and theirs differ so saying....

"Britain proves Activision right - you will in fact gladly pay an inflated price for no good reason"

.....is horsehit. People payed their money for a product they wanted. Nobody force them to pay extra, it's was their choice as consumerists.

Your point is only valid if you live under the assumption these people were forced to buy this product.

My point applies to the world of Warcraft players who willing spend $25 on a horse. That's the price and people are happy to pay it. That's life.

If companies like activation see this and want to hike the price on everything then that's tough. Do you expect those who can afford or just don't mind spending more to not purchase things incase it pushes the price up for you?

@Bakewell: Bear in mind that sales figures are counted, but "sales followed by disappointment and trade-in/return" figures are not.

Shiiit. Now this is (technically) one of the best games in the history of the world ever, 1) The next game will have an inflated RRP too, and 2) I'll have to play MW2 to see what all the fuss was about.

Please no North Americans implying Brits are thick... uncouth and may I remind you... George Bush for 2 terms?

Who won the bloody Battle of Britain eh?

Fact is you may not like it but the quality is there. I wouldn't vomit on a burning copy of Starcraft if it was being cuddled by a puppy, but I do at least have the good grace and intelligence is appreciate that it is a good game

1) VERY FEW people would have bought this game at the inflated price of £55 when supermarkets were selling it at midnight on release day for £25!

2) This doesn't include dissapointed returns / trade ins.

3) Global truth is not measured by mass appeal. Just because this game is SUPER EASY and accessable to almost anyone with thumbs doesn't make it the greatest game ever made.

The problem with this thinking, and its a line of thought shared by many people, isn't with what companies are doing per se - companies exist solely to turn a profit, what do you expect. The problem is that consumers have become so desensitized, so beaten down by the companies who *rely on their money* to survive that when individuals are taken advantage of they just say well "that's tough".

If consumers actually rallied to oppose this kind of crap and stuck by their guns about not buying or what have you, we'd see a lot less corporate bullshit.
But, we cant help giving in to marketing and we cave. I and everyone is guilty of it. People *should* mind though, whether they can afford it or not.
