ModDB getting into digital distribution with 'Desura' photo

A new PC-based digital distribution service is entering the market, but this one's not what you might expect. It's called Desura, and it's coming to us from ModDB. Two years in the making and not finalized yet, this application aims to lessen the struggle of getting mods to work with your games.

Desura will contain many of the community features and extras like achievements, stats, and what have you we've come to expect from similar services. Interestingly, it's going to have editors to pick and choose only the "high quality releases," although any of the less desirable content will always be on the main site.

There's a quick Q&A on the service, in case you're longing to hear more. Desura is obviously targeting only a specific sub-section of gaming, but I think it will be one to watch for anyone intrigued by community projects. It's in private beta currently, and should become set for launch sometime next year.

Colour me intrigued, although I would have preferred an integration into Steam, I guess not everything uses it. I'll definitely give this a look.

There sure are a lot of these things popping up. I wonder how many separate "achievement" systems the market will be able to bear at one time and how long it'll be before two or more of them decide to join forces with a single, cross-platform system.

I sure hope they also support games installed under steam cause there's some fine mods out there!

I'll be keeping my eye on this!

At some point I will need 10 clients running just to run a game. I already tend to run 3 or 4 at a time depending on the game.

It's rather stupid.

I like that there will be such a service exclusively for mods. I would far prefer it if Steam just upped their support though. There ARE a couple of mods on there, it's just mostly old stuff, they aren't keeping up. If ModDB, instead of creating their own client, would work something out with Valve, so they could supervise mod-additions to Steam, or something to that extent, now that would be amazing.
I'll still give Desura a try once it's released though.

What about Neotokyo? For some reason not one gaming blog wanted to post a story about Neotokyo(I pestered all of them to do so). It was an HL2 mod that was in development for 5-6 years and was not just a bunch of aesthetic changes. It drastically changed the model of squad based shooters. Also, it was on Steam for some time.

I gave Neotokyo a try because you kept posting about it, but it really didn't seem special at all -- I totally couldn't tell what the fuss was. So yeah, that might have something to do with the lack of coverage.

Interesting idea. Easily the most annoying part of modding PC games, is getting them to work. Some games are easier than others, but for me I often find it aggravating when I spend time troubleshooting mods when I could be actually PLAYING THE DAMN GAME! Grrr! Oh well though. Often times, that hard work is worth it.

oh how naive you are. A game being bad doesn't consitute for lack of coverage. After all Battlefield Heroes has gotten so many articles about its player count and shit that doesn't really say much about the game itself. Which tries to make a complex game by using mismatched simplistic styles. It really is not fun to play at all.

Neotokyo had a cool style to it, but it was basically exactly like CS except with 3 classes and some really minor changes to the formula. It was just too basic for me.

Still a quality polished mod though.

I have to admit that I'm interested but confused. How are they going to get income from this? Is it ad-supported or they going to try and sell mods? Or perhaps it will offer the full games, and include features to make applying the mods to the full games easier?

I find that most overhaul mods are very easy to install, but time investment and possible frustration comes when you start getting into installing more than a several at once, like you might do in Oblivion or Fallout 3. I love having my games with a ton of mods, don't get me wrong, but it can take a fair amount of time.
