Mod your useless HD DVD drive to BURN PEOPLE'S FACES OFF!

5:00 AM on 01.06.2009, Hamza CTZ Aziz 22 comments

     HD

Stuck with a defunct HD DVD drive that’s taking up precious space from your videogames and the Blu-rays? Got a need to inflict pain onto random strangers because your parents don’t love you enough? If you answered yes to both of those questions, then I have the perfect video for you!

This how-to guide from Instructables gives a detailed look at how to take the blue laser diode from the Xbox 360's HD DVD drive and turn it into a secondary weapon that attaches to Walther PPKs. What the video doesn’t show is what happens to all of the remaining pieces of the HD DVD drive. If I were to make this mod, I would sharpen up all of the plastic pieces into shivs to aid in my nerd rampage.

Or, you know, just use the gun.

Great!

Now all I need is the money for a HDDVD, a gun, a diode housing, a solder gun, a laser guide for the gun, driver circuit(with all extra bits.)

Oh...

Now they just need to mod it to make an awesome 'pew pew' noise when fired.

Wait, why is the HD DVD drive useless? My HD DVD's must have missed the memo stating that they have to stop working and looking fucking beautiful now that the format isn't supported...cause they still work and still look fucking beautiful.

Plus they cost like 5 bucks a pop, compared to their 30 dollar Blu Ray counterparts.

Just sayin'...

@ Grimspoon
But there's like, what, 50 movies to choose from?

Also, I'm from the south, the gun will be the easy part :)

Hamza... You should make a hat out of one of these lasers. A shark with a fricking laser beam fears no one

I think I'll just continue using it to play ridiculously under-priced content in 1080p with uncompressed 7.1 surround sound.

awesome post, that looked like a simple build for such a cool toy. you could probably fit the same lens into a laser pointer as well.

That is really cool but I can never see myself making one of these.

He put it on a PPK? I've fired plenty of handguns, the PPK is one of the worst handguns I've ever fired. Inaccurate, painful to fire because of its design, the trigger requires several pounds of pressure to pull... Classic garbage. Give me a classic Colt 1911.

Grimspoon: Jokes man! I'm looking to buy one myself when I see one for like $20. Hell, I still have a VCR player!

A laser this powerful can cause permanent eye damage from milliseconds of exposure time. Even the beam reflected off a wall can cause permanent damage (albeit at a much slower rate). Making one of these is just stupid unless you have the proper safety equipment, and are trained with this class of laser.

Sorry Hamza, I just catch a lot of flak for enjoying a defunct format and have grown used to people hating it.
