It’s been a long while since we’ve had a legitimately good Batman videogame. The most recent one I could think of was The Adventures of Batman & Robin back on the Genesis and SNES, and that game came out fifteen years ago.

As for The Dark Knight, a tie-in videogame was unofficially (and apparently, inadvertently) revealed by Gary Oldman (aka Commissioner Gordon) in an interview with G4 last July, shortly after the film’s release. EA later confirmed that Pandemic Studios had indeed been working on such a game, but it looks like that was shelved -- perhaps because the awful Batman Begins game only sold 587,000 copies.

So it is with immense glee that I present to you one YouTuber’s idea of what a Dark Knight videogame could have looked like -- on the NES. The user absolutely nailed the “cutscenes” that slowly moved across the screen back in those days; there’s some suitably 8-bit menu music; and the game was “developed” by Sunsoft, which is appropriate -- after all, they were the people behind the NES Batman and Batman: Return of the Joker games (as well as the vaunted Blaster Master series, of course).

Am I the only one looking for a “Start” key to push on my keyboard?

I never played the NES Batman games, but I love the way this mock-up is presented. I don't think an actual company would write-in "It's all part of the plan" though. That seems more like something only the really passionate gamers/Dark Knight fans would think to put in the game. I'm sure the real game would just be a sidescroller, of course, but I still like the presentation.

That would have to be on SNES. I think the pallet is too high for NES.

Does anyone remember the original Sunsoft Batman for NES? That game was awesome.

Holy shit. I rented the NES Batman like 5 times. One of my all time favorite games. The robotic bosses/spike robots made no sense, but I loved it.

More 16-bit than 8-bit, but still nice...

You obviously never played last gen's Batman: Vengeance, a great game with a few minor flaws that was based on the Animated Series.

To add to the Batman game nostalgia;

One of the best games I've ever played; SNES The Adventures of Batman and Robin, based off the animated series.

Actually, I think I'm going to hit this up right now. The Animated Series had such a perfect Penguin.

I would have loved to see a bit of gameplay but otherwise that was an amazing video. Very nice work.

*orgasms*

Batman for the NES was one of my favourite NES games of all time, so this video makes me very happy. I was actually fantazasing about a 8-bit version of The Dark Knight a while back.

@Mxyzptlk: Indeed, I have not played it -- in fact, I've never even heard of it. I'll have to look it up.

@ashtar & Magnalon: I mentioned both those games!

Ahh the was such a mystery to 16bit games you never knew where they came from or who made them as a kid. Its like because the game could not speak the actually was this strange ghost in a machine kind of complex going on. TAKE ME BACK! ahhh Nostalgalicous!

As great as that was, I'd counter your comment about the most recent good Batman game being Adventures of Batman and Robin(my roommate and I have been looking for a copy of that for 15 years, to put my love of that game in perspective), I'd say that Batman: Vengence for GCN/PS2/XBOX was brilliant in every way. Story, gameplay, cut scenes, voice acting, everything was spot on. Anyways, I'm too drunk to keep going, so I'll stop now.

YES! NES batman made so sense, but it was a classic. It was almost like a mega man style gane:

I was holding my 360 controller waiting to get into some Gears 2 and every time the "PRESS START" text began flashing on the screen I started pressing start and smiling because I was about to play some BATMAN.

Dude, that Batman the Animated Series/Adventures of Batman and Robin for Genesis was no joke. It was so fucking hard, but MAN it was awesome. The graphics/animations were so dang good, the music was the usual Danny Elfman style but more of a cool techno feel. The controls were smooth and simple, and the gameplay was a mix between shoot'em'up/beat'em'up. The only flaws are the EXTREME difficulty(how the fuck did kids beat this game?) and the shoot'em'up level in Two-Face's stage goes on for faaaaaaar too long.

Also, I third Batman Vengeance being cool. Its based on the later seasons of the show, and it captures it so well. I had for Gamecube, and its actually pretty good.
