MLB 11 The Show has one-button controls for the disabled photo

Here's a story that will warm your heart.

Thanks to its ongoing relationship with a disabled gamer, Sony San Diego has added a special difficulty level to this year's iteration of its annual baseball series, MLB 11 The Show. Hans Smith, a 25-year-old St. Louis Cardinals fan with cerebral palsy, wrote a letter to the developer a few years ago, and the studio was so struck by his words that they put him in last year's game, reports ESPN.

Smith has since started an organization called the Association for Disabled Virtual Athletes, and the difficulty level has the same name. In this mode, the game takes care of movement; all a player has to do is press a single button to throw the ball or swing the bat. This gives many disabled gamers an opportunity to enjoy MLB 11, and playing videogame baseball is vital to these folks, since, as Smith put it,

To some people, these are just games. But that's because at any time, they can turn off the console and go out to a ballpark and play baseball in the physical world. I can't do that. [...] So in a sense, this game is my reality.

Kudos to Sony San Diego for this wonderful new feature. It might not make the bullet points on the back of the box like, say, "all-new analog-stick hitting, pitching, and fielding," but it's going to make a big difference in the lives of many, many people. If you're interested in reading more about Smith and his organization, check out the full feature over at ESPN.

This is nice to see.
I wish more games would take into consideration the disabled.
Whenever I play a game and it doesn't have subtitles, or allow the controls to be mapped however needed (Which is the most common to see). It's always a big disappointment to me.

Odd. I could've sworn there were four comments last time I checked.

@rexwolf2: Your mind is playing tricks on you!

Seriously, though, we had to replace the original post -- there was a problem with it on the back end. Thanks for reading it again!

Absolutely wonderful!! I really hope more devs take notice and if they can incorporate something for the disabled, I hope they do so! It makes little or no difference to abled gamers who play, but it makes a world of difference for others!

This is so refreshing to see. I used to work with adults with autism. They were all in their 20's and the age of my friends and I. I remember every time we took them out on respite trips my co-worker and I would bring them to our houses to play video games because they loved Madden and what not but their motor skills in their hands weren't developed enough to play most of the other games. Sony doing this just gives these guys a chance to feel normal, like one of the guys and that's what all the guys I worked with wanted so that's why I really appreciate this move by Sony.

thanks Samit. I have a child with disabilities, so stories like these hit close to home and always choke me up. And thanks to the Dtoiders that take this seriously and have kind words to add, you have no idea how refreshing and encouraging it is :-)

This is an incredible story. Sony San Diego deserves major props for this, and this story needs to reach the masses! ESPN needs to send this over to ABC News or something.

By the way, I've totally done the thing where I followed my team's season day-by-day, including rests. I never finished it though.

As if anyone would have something negative to say about this article.

Capcom is SORTOF doing this with mvc3, but I like the idea of the handicap, so to speak, being proper. It helps not just disabled gamers but all gamers unite. Sounds gay but it makes a difference in my opinion.

I really don't understand why controller mapping isn't included in every game.

This is really cool. Nice going, Sony San Diego.

And, controller mapping should NOT be this nice little bonus feature that's cool. It should be a standard feature. Seriously, I've thought of more than one game that could be made a thousand times better with a different control scheme.
