MK vs. DC Universe writer tells fans to lighten up photo

If it's not Diablo or Fallout "fans" bitching to anyone who'll listen, it's comic book geeks whimpering and whining that Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe isn't realistic. Yes, we're now nitpicking about realism in a world where characters can fly or are living skeleton ninjas. Luckily, the man currently penning the collaboration had something to say about it.

"Why is that guy fighting that guy?" asked game writer and comic author Jimmy Palmiotti, before answering himself: "Well, ha! Why? Because it’s fun, that’s why."

That's as good a reason as any, I think, and the only one you should really need when you're dealing with videogames. Scorpion can tell Superman to "get over here" simply because it's fun, if purist fans can remember what that is. That said, Palmiotti admits that it wasn't just the fans who bellyached over the concept.

"The Mortal Kombat people and the DC people were like ‘No, no! You can’t do that! Those guys don’t meet, they’re in different dimensions!’ Blah blah blah!" the writer explained. "We came in to fix that."

The fix, of course, is whatever convoluted reason Palmiotti and co. comes up with to explain exactly how and why the Outworld gang hooks up with the DC folks. As for what that reason is, however, we'll just have to wait. It's a secret until further notice. I doubt it can be anymore contrived and bullsh*tty than most of the absurd retcons and deus ex machina that comic book writers churn out on a yearly basis.

God forbid the game is non-canon and won't affect the continuity of either series at all.

I don't think anyone was worried about the concept of bringing people together who realistically couldn't. It's been done before. No one questioned Smash Brothers, or Kingdom Hearts, so we must be ok with people coming together from different worlds. It seemed to me like the bigger concern was with the developers, the "MK has never been as good as SF" debate. They want to have fun with this and they don't know if they'll be able to.

Who needs a reason to have Scorpion throw a spear through Supermans head? In fact if that doesn't happen I'll be pissed

if you're thinking about story line in a fighting game you're hurting for another genre that actually cares about story but you don't know it yet.

Does anyone care about the continuity of Mortal Kombat in the first place?

Superman: "It's okay guys, I'm superman. I'll just win this tournament really quick and we can all go home."

Shao Kahn: "Not so fast, Kriptonian. I have nerfed you. You are all of equal strength in this dimension."

Superman: "Shit. Hey Batman, you got a sec?"

My only complaint with MK vs DC is the fact that it looks like total ass. I like fighting games and crossovers; I'd probably buy it if the fighting didn't look completely shitty.

This game has the potential to have an entertaining concept, the problem is - the last Mortal Kombat was honestly pretty shitty (Create-a-Fatality can eat me), and I don't expect anything good out of this one. Especially since they seem to be taking their time getting around to the total continuity reset promised with Armageddon.

Though, really, who cares about MK continuity either? Blah.

My gripes have nothing to do with the two universes going at it. I actually think that part's fun. My main gripe is the bastardization of the series in general, and then to further said bastardization by toning down the over-the-top violence the series is known for. That would be like making the Next Gran Turismo without cars.

Hey Moltar, apparently MK vs DCU plays a lot like MK2. Food for thought!

The probably with people complaining about this crossover is that comic fans have a different mindset than a lot of other fans. Next to gaming, comics is one of my biggest hobbies and I don't really question the crossover, much like I didn't question Marvel vs Capcom.

Besides, no one pays attention to the story in Mortal Kombat games anyway. MvC2 didn't really even have one from what I remember. You fight random teams of heroes/villians, beat the final boss and do a pose. Roll credits. But MvC was fun as hell so no one cared.

This kind of reminds me of the people who complain that Rock Band and Guitar hero are nothing like playing the real instruments. Why can't people remember that these are games?

I'll lighten up when I attach myself to the mains and put a lightbulb in my mouth.

Seriously, I don't care how they get the universes linked together, as long as it doesn't suck.

So comic book fans are upset that their superheroes are in another universe and somehow it's not realistic? I guess it's as probable as any of them actually getting laid.
