MK vs. DC's Joker Fatality is NOT censored ... in Europe photo

Here's something you don't see every day. A videogame has been censored, but it's actually North America that has seen changes made, while the European version remains untouched. That game is Midway's Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, and the edit in question concerns the famous Joker fatality that was reported to have been snipped in order to secure a Teen rating.

"That's partly true [that the fatality has been edited] ... You know, for North America we have a Teen rating, and teen really means 13 and above," explains senior producer Hans Lo. "Thirteen is pretty young, you have to admit. For Europe we have a 15, 16+ rating - so it's a bit different."

Joker's fatality revolves around the Clown Prince of Crime shooting his victim with a toy gun that reveals a classic "BANG" flag, before blasting them in the head with a real one. In the edited version, he lets the defeated opponent walk offscreen before finishing the act.

This is a small edit, but it's bound to irritate some gamers, especially knowing that Midway made the concession for the sake of a T-rating. Are you particularly bothered at them gimping the only great fatality shown in the game so far, or is it too small a detail to worry about?

Welp, I live in the US and am therefore not buying this diluted bullshit. I only eat the purest of bullshit.

Unnecessary video game editing is so 90s.

This is so fucking backwards. Isn't it Europe who receives the more censored versions of games?

Oh well, enjoy a more badass fatality, Europe!

Is it just me, or does anyone else have 0 interest in this game?

I'm still holding out for a Mortal Kombat/Pokemon crossover.

Considering the Fatalities have always been the big draw of MK games and the history of controversy the series has generated in the past from it, it's certainly disappointing that they changed the fatalities for a lower rating.

No Johnny Cage AND censored fatalities? FAIL!

At the rate they're going, this is going to make the original SNES Mortal Kombat look like a bloodbath.

This kinda stuff happens all the time, but its still sad to see it play out.

If this game was a bit more polished, I think I could overlook some small alterations like this; But this game looks like yesterday's garbage. Covered in today's garbage. Covered in porn booth squeegee scrapings.

Final nail in the coffin. And I was going to buy this game.

But now, not gonna happen. This decision has nothing to do with what you censored (ok maybe a little), but with why you censored it

The shocking thing here is that the censorship involves violence. It is not unusual for sexual censorship in North Americe of stuff which is OK in Europe. But as far as censorship of violence this is odd indeed.

I'm SO pissed off at the fact that they fucked up the Joker's fatality. FUCK that. It's MORTAL KOMBAT DC, jesus, if you didn't want young fans to get the wrong idea, you should of never signed on in the first place.

I got to play this at PAX for a nice long while.

The game is still fun to play regardless. Its like...Soul Calibur fun.

Yeah it sucks that it's been censored; but its just going to be something that I'll get over. It doesn't take away the enjoyment of playing the game.

I can understand making the small cut to gain a much larger potential market share in the "T" crowd but is there actually any MK fans that are under 25? MK isn't a new franchise and anyone who played MK1 in the arcade is pushing 30-35. Why not cater towards you actual fan base and make it an M game.

The only other idea I have as to why this happened is pressure from DC to protect their image in the US.

Maybe it will be accessible via code, like blood on the genesis. Though after the hot coffee scandal, I wouldn't hold my breath.

That was the only thing that showed real promise. His second fatality isn't that bad, but it's been done to death with Mileena's nail spit, Reiko's shuriken throw, and Noob's shuriken throw.

I hate stuff like this, and its entirely not midways fault. The whole ratings system is entirely out of sync with youth of today.

Frankly, anyone around the age of 13 and up will love stylized violence with no apparent negative side effects. Kids these days have grown up with video games and amazing special effects in movies; they are much, much better at determining whats real and whats not than they tend to be given credit for. Particularly something silly, in a game like this.

I remember when 300 came out, with an r-16 rating here in NZ, i had to download it and put it on dvd for my mates who were 14 at the time. It was EXACTLY the kind of movie theyd love. And certainly nothing to make their poor, tiny, 'innocent' teenage brains melt.

Poor MK vs. DC. This game has been stripped naked and hosed off, Flora Minton style. Half the appeal of the original Mortal Kombat was in the ludicrously gruesome fatalities so it's a shame to see Midway and DC dismantle such a recognizable element of the series.

I'm just a bit flummoxed as to why they were even shooting for a Teen rating to begin with. I mean, obviously, it opens them up to more sales, and younger people are probably the only people dumb enough to still like Mortal Kombat games, but...

Actually, I guess I just figured it out.

They should let it be adjustable depending on the console's parental controls. How come they haven't invented that yet?

My favourite MK game was MK II arcade. I'm not buying this game because of the fact that it's not like previous MK games and I honestly don't think I would enjoy it. Yeah, I like Batman, but in some of the comics I read batman actually KILLED people (See The Dark Knight Returns, by Frank Miller). I've even see some DC characters commit Genocide (see Lobo). Wouldn't he fit in this game? nah, I suppose that Captain marvel (Shazam) would fit in with the likes of Baraka and Scorpion... Not the guy who wears a chain around one arm with a massive sharp hook hanging off of them... Sigh...

@ windexwindex

Cost and time are two factors. There are a few games out there wherein you can turn blood effects on or off but designing two versions for each fatality in MK vs. DC would be a pain for animators and just about everyone.

Dammit. Hey, at least they get SOMETHING.

Sad, really; the fatality was the only reason many were getting the game, me included. I didn't know it was such a small edit, but hey, the damage is already done. Besides, it'd probably be a bad example for that to be the first MK game I play, especially since it looks like it'll probably be a bad game period and not just for MK.

I'm waiting for this game to get horrible sales so that they'll be forced to release something along the lines of a director's cut version.

The reason it's a "T," is because DC wanted it to be. They're also not really down with anyone ripping out Superman's spine, or anything like that.

So its all about the teen rating to reach a wider audience an sell more copies of the game.
I dont get this. A game that made its name on ultra violent content. Games like GTA have a mature rating and sell millions.

What kind of backwards logic are they using over at Midway these days?
