Miyamoto: Wii Music is 'a new kind of musical instrument' photo

In a roundtable session with several media outlets, Nintendo's developer extraordinaire Shigeru Miyamoto laid out the details on his latest work, Wii Music. GamePro had some highlights from this session, and it seems that Shiggy dropped some highlight-worthy bullet points.

Miyamoto likes other games like Guitar Hero and Beatmania, but he thinks of his game as less of a "cover band" experience and more like a performing one. He says "My goal wouldn't be to try and lull people to join the best cover band, but rather, to let them move beyond that rather basic level of music training."

The Wii Music track list came up in the discussion. Miyamoto defended it by saying that they were aiming for a casual appeal, and that many of today's top songs didn't have chord progressions conducive to Wii Music.

Finally, Miyamoto said "I don't think it's right to call Wii Music a game; instead I think a better way to describe Wii Music is that it's a new kind of musical instrument."

Really? If so, it's the least musical musical instrument I've ever played!

As much as I hate to say it, I'm really getting sick of Miyamoto...

He's just doing what he has always done, except now his vision seems to have fallen out of grace with some gamers. You have to give the man some credit for his artistic integrity at least. That being said, I don't plan on buying this game.

He's right about Rock Band and Guitar Hero being the rhythm game equivilants to cover bands. Thing is, I just don't see how Wii Music is that different. It's still just playing along to licnesed music, except there are no standards for winning or losing. Basically, it's like being in a cover band that has no standards.

Now if her were talking about Rhythm Tengoku Gold, which has tons of original music, and the ability to play entire songs how ever you want (if you don't mind being told you failed afterwards), but also the capacity to try and excel and "win", then I'd be agreeing with him.

I checked IGN's list of reviewed games yesterday for the Wii. It lists the games in order of most recently reviewed 1st to older reviews last. I think I may have seen 3 or 4 games with reviews over 7.0. Just what in the h3ll are people playing on Gamecube 1.5 - 0.5?

Wii Music = RRoD/Blu Ray inclusion fail combined.

No Miyamoto. It's more like a shittier midi cover band experience that can completely fuck up the rhythm of a song on top of it.

Instrument my ass.

Anything with Wii in the title will be one of the top selling things. People don't know any better Nintendo has sucked out the brain of man kind and put a waggle stick in it. The true gamer is a breed being overtaken, we must fight!

wii music is amazing you're just playing it wrong. to get an idea at how deep this thing really is, you have to look at the sample videos of twinkle twinkle little star. you get to see the potential you have in rearranging the songs for a completely different sound.

there's the jazz remix and a reggae one with steel drums. this game really is a masterpiece and i don't think miyamoto is missing a beat. oh terrible puns....

Wii Music always sounded lame to me, but I was sort of hoping that Nintendo would prove me wrong by the time the game was released... but it still looks like shit.

I am personally going to avoid Wii Music. The graphics look craptastic, and the gameplay looks lackluster. It looks very gimmicky to me.

I'd rather play Rock Band or Guitar Hero to be honest.

That is really fucking insulting to musicians everywhere. It's a TOY, Miyamoto. Nothing more. You've had a lot of good ideas, but this ain't one of them. Go back to creating fantasy worlds, and stop trying to create altogether new products. You fail at it.

Especially from a community that defended Nintendo so much.

And yea Miyamoto, its a crappy waggle-fest that sadly will sell millions.

Is it just me or has Miyamoto seemed a lot more ....self loving towards Wii Music than any other project of his? I've never heard him talk up his own game so much, let alone with an almost Peter Molyneux-esque level of overconfidence.

I hate guitar hero
I hate rock band
and now I hate wii music

I noticed that miyamoto is really hyped about wii music. maybe he is trying to fool himself into thinking he created something worthwhile.
mario galaxy was damn impressive. yet he wasnt riding his own cock about that game.
make another donkey kong game miyamoto, a remake/rebuild of the gameboy game would be awesome.

Miyomoto is the only reason why I still respect Nintendo. Face it, without that man, Nintendo would just be another publisher like every other company out there. He IS Nintendo.

The problem is that the company knows where the market is heading, and Miyomoto has to follow suit. They all know where the money is. So, until the market changes, this is the stuff people will be getting for years to come.

Where are the Miyomotos in Microsoft and Sony? I love my PS3 and 360, but really, I'm sick to death of war games as retail releases. I'd never use my 360 at all if it wasn't for Live Arcade, which is sad seeing how I keep criticizing cheap games that look like they were whipped together in a few weeks. I think I had more fun with my PS2 than all these next-gen systems combined.
