Shigeru Miyamoto is legendary for creating some of the most memorable and revered character in all of videogames. Mario, Donkey Kong, Link ... and some others. However, Miyamoto's current commitment to being just a little pretentious continues, stating that environments are also characters, and that Wii Sports Resort's Wuhu Island could be the next Mario.
"... One part of Nintendo’s business has been creating a whole host of characters which we have then licensed out," explains the impish designer. "But I’ve always thought, seeing as we are a games company, that in addition to characters resembling people, why couldn’t we also turn the actual stages of games into characters?
"We really polished up the island, turned it into a resort and actually made the location into a kind of character. This will then lead to a range of island series."
Miyamoto believes that Wuhu Island could lead all manner of games, and that "it will be fun to see all the ideas that we can come up with." It's kind of sad that the man who helped shape Hyrule is now busting a nut over a rather mawkish resort island, but this is how Nintendo earns its scratch these days, and more power to 'em.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
...also, puppies.
Stole from here
I think that if we change the word character for the expression ip (intelectual property) then what he says makes perfect sense.
Also stupid idea.
I rest my case.
i want another pilotwings too
I really have a lot of love for this guy, the characters and series he has created but he's going off the deep end.
Honestly, having continuity between games would be great.
They're probably trying to imbue the island with character and familiarity, making the player feel comfortable at it, setting the stage for new games with new activities in a familiar, soothing, home-like environment. Much like Nicojay2 remembers PilotWings Island. The thing is that the reasons he feeld at home in that are somewhat distorted. It's a mini-USA, and a huge slice of gamers, myself included, is not from there. Given a neutral setting we may all connect to the place.
Besides, it's meant to be a controlled environment. It's not on-line extravaganza, this is not Home. The Wii has become a group-console. Nintendo's trying to make gaming a social activity and people seem to just not get it, wanting to retract to their contorted, lone-in-mom's-basement forms. If there is one argument that I find that totally misses the mark is that "if you don't like it, don't play it", but I'll have to go this way, for those games are bringing people into the hobby. Stuff can co-exist afterall.
Besides, who doesn't like Wii Music and like Guitar Hero MECHANICS-WISE knows or cares absolutely nothing about music. Music is about creating and liberty, not hitting the 4 coloured squares at the exact moment. I find it amazing that a game with usually a single input can be a million times more MUSICAL than one with 5 buttons. I'm not even saying I prefer Wii Music over Guitar Hero or Rock Band. Fact is I really don't. But bashing something because there ain't nothing telling you exactly what to do or because you can't fail miserably and repeat to exhaustion until you memorize a color succesion is just dumb.
I like all three consoles, it's just that you have to find the one(s) that suits you best and be happy. Bashing an industry genius for keeping things simple and accessible when everyone strays from simplicity is uncalled for. Super Mario Galaxy is one of the finest games of this generation and Wii Sports is fun as hell. Here's waiting that Resort repeats the feat.
Those games where more to show off the 3d capabilities of the consoles at that time.
But i could be wrong :)
Seriously, is that a bad translation or is he finally bonkers?
This just in: Miyamoto wants to make the next Zelda the same as its precedessors
This just in: Miyamoto wants to reuse Wuhu island again, and again, and again
I wonder what the point of him even taking time to do interviews anymore is. It's not like the crowd he's aiming for will ever hear/see this kind of thing. Usually, everything he says ends up as troll bait on gamer sites...
