Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto has stated that he wants Mii characters to become the global standard for avatar creation and find their way into everything like some terrible, adorable disease.
“Simply put, I want to spread Mii characters all around the world,” said the impish developer. “Exchanging it with people close to you is a given. Whether you use StreetPass or through the network, I want to implement Mii characters in all sorts of ways. Ultimately, I want Mii characters to be the world standard for avatars.
“I hope that in the future, when you have to go to the city hall for some formality, they’ll ask you to submit your Mii character too [laughs]. If it becomes a worldwide format, it’ll be fun. Purely and simply, I just want everyone to use it in a variety of ways. Well, that ambition about the city hall thing might be a bit extreme, but I do want Mii to be more widely used."
The 3DS launched in Japan this week, and it sold out almost immediately. Shigeru's dream of a totalitarian dictatorship ruled by big-headed Jesuses and Hitlers seems to be headed towards reality. We will get to add our support for the new regime on March 27 in North America and March 25 in Europe.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Maybe use them for a picture on a profile, but don't people have better pictures for there profile then some cartoon version of themself?
Street pass is lame when it comes to the Mii transfer part, what do you do with them? Make a Mii parade? Why is that fun? lololol
I wish the Miis bodies were a bit more customizable instead of looking like old playmobil figures.
I agree with you on Miyamoto just wanting everybody to turn their frowns upside down, but Miis are purdy darn generic, if you ask me. They resemble a 5 year-old's fridge art.
It's an interesting concept, but it seems a little... Japanese.
He probably did this interview with his Mii talking for him.
Screw stasis keeping us alive in the future, our Miis will be our embodiments.
The thing about creation in gaming is that it can be just impressive and versatile as it can be generic and depressing. I wish people were less intent on replicating what other people post for rate-ups and votes.
Miis, Youtube, Flipnotes and Little Big Planet - the copypasta is just a disease everywhere. I always pride myself in making avatars that look unique, to a point where I run into someone that just designed their character to look like Trunks that I die a little on the inside.
You don't get the crazy creation aspect of the Miis, that has spawned unholy avatars like Doctor Teeth and Robotnik, but at least you can make it look like you - which is the point of an avatar.
I couldn't agree more
GIRLEH THANGS IN MAH VIDJA GAYMES?!
Maybe its because real people don't have natural pink or purple hair or Nintendo hates scene people?
Real people do have pink and purple hair...its called hair dye, also, its an avatar. Last time I checked, avatars weren't supposed to be realistic, mii's aren't anyway.
that, and Wii Music
