While the world "oohs" and "aahs" at Microsoft's hands-off Project Natal concept, Nintendo design legend Shigeru Miyamoto has voiced skepticism for the whole idea. Unsure that Natal will work, the waggle fan states that an interactive experience needs a physical controller.
"As someone who thinks of things from the perspective of creating interactive experiences, I really think that you do need something [to hold]," claims the impish game creator. "I don't think as a creator that I could create an experience that truly feels interactive if you don't have something to hold in your hand, if you don't have something like force feedback that you can feel from the controller. That's why I think the Wii remote, particularly with Wii MotionPlus, makes for such a strong experience."
I wouldn't use the simplified Wiimote as a good example, but then, I don't work for Nintendo. Miyamoto then does what Miyamoto does best, and pours a patronizing, passive-aggressive derision on both Sony and Microsoft: "Looking at what the other companies have shown here at E3, it feels like they have finally obtained the very basic technology for doing motion control, but perhaps they still have to learn how to use that and take advantage of it in an interactive experience."
He then preened himself and went to eat corn with the other peacocks.

I guess he has every right to brag... maybe.
Power Glove was only licensed by Nintendo, they (and thus Miyamoto) didn't have anything else to do with it.
You need "something" in your hand, the Wii does it well with the little speaker too - brilliant idea.
I'm looking forward to Sony's MoCo idea, looks awesome, looks useful, looks like it will simply improve the gaming experience, but Natal? Wank me off.
My derision is direct and obvious.
I would respect Miyamoto more if his was too.
Also, needs more rumble.
Well said.
and he's fat.
I would respect Miyamoto more if his was too."
Agreed.
I agree. Given a choice of no wand vs wand, I'll take wand.
Nintendo's only successful because parents originally didn't want to shell out huge bucks. Now it succeeds on that word of mouth. Frankly Nintendo is not a hardcore console no matter how you slice it. There are just far more casual play my cellphone games kind of people out there.
This success should not be mimicked because it doesn't fit Sony or MS brand image.
I'm never going to sit in front of my PS3 and start making for some wanking motions. Unless it's interactive porn.
Essentially I fear that everyone is focusing so much on motion controls when the old tried and true method still works fantastically.
Truth is if you would have shown me working motion controls when I was 5 I would have shat myself with glee, but now I find a controller is all I need to be happy.
I remember telling my friends that the Wii wasn't bad and it could be some sort of controllerless freak. That day has come my friends. That day has come.
I think it woulkd be much more ridiculous to waggle your body as if you had a seizure.
You took the EXACT words right out of my mouth! "OO controllu, you need it to press the button to skippa your gamsu and not play them". Bullshit.
The wiimote sucks. Waggling sucks. Rumble feedback is as primitive HMI as you can get. Plus- not invented by nintendo so shush fanboys. I vaguely enjoy shooters on the wii. Despite wanting to die from the awful graphics and lack of features and limited multiplayer etc etc
But the bottom line is this - the controller doesn't matter, it's the quality of the software for each individual game that counts.
At least that's what your mom said in bed last night.
I don't think it's a dick move at all --- I agree with him 100% I was far more impressed by Sony's display at E3 than I was with Microsoft's, but he's also right about Nintendo having more experience with the technology. Something tells me the PS3 motion controller is going to blow lots of stuff away, but Nintendo kinda has a right to brag seeing as how well they're doing right now.
@ Your Moms Hot Lover
Yes, the controller does matter. Otherwise Natal and the PS3's motion controller wouldn't be around, trying to compete with the Wii.
Also, what a witty last line, based on your username.
Just because something sells a bunch doesn't mean it is any good. Like, say any Britney Spears record. Or your mom's porno.
In my opinion Nintendo has nothing to brag about because their last generation tech blows and from the sounds of it even the motionplus doesn't deliver on 1:1 movement.
When I say the controller doesn't matter- I meant to the quality of games, not the industry as a whole or the universe or whatever. The control method does not make the game great. Only the programming can do that.
PS - I save my witty comments for real life where people actually laugh, but if you can't tell that my username and repeated mom comments are meant to be a satire on the lameness of fanboy flaming then you're taking yourself and the internet too seriously.
Nintendo also clung to discs and look where that got them that generation.
