I was sitting watching TV reading Jordan's article on it on my 3DS and you could tell that the translation or even just what might be Miyamoto's english, wasn't good AT ALL. It was barely readable, let alone understandable -and that felt evident when even Jordan pointed out that Miyamoto liked the word "retirement" to much.
So yeah, I'm not surprised we got this idea from it, Wired or whoever didn't do a good job making it readable as much as they did just directly translating it. Miyamoto really shouldn't be a guy we have to decipher just because he isn't an fluent english speaker -we need better translators around when he speaks.
New IP creation has nothing to do with his status at Nintendo.
That's like thinking apple will quit making iphones now that jobs is dead.
Yes it does at his level he is like a huge securitynet him and all his creations nobody at nintendo has actually tried stepping from under his shadow in mnore then a decade. Face it the only true creation that even rivals his is from Satoshi Tajiri and is called Pokemon and was created back in 1995 tell me another huge creation first party that came after without having to look up wikipedia...and isnt made by Myiamoto...
Oww and the analogy between making new phones(hardware) and new Intellectual property(software) doesn't make sense...Ofcourse Nintendo wouldnt stop milking Mario after he goess its just their characters are so big and intimidating to follow that it might come at the expense of future talent...
Imagine being a creative and young developer and having ideas of your own and the bosses keep saying yes but replace your own character with mario then change this... And you stick around for 20 years and never get your own shot because the standards are it has to rival a mario character in popularity or get changed enough so it becomes something else fit for a mario character.
You know these guys work with their idol its intimidating especially if you work in japanese culture I can imagine it only amplifies the fear of failure...How would you feel having to compete with a man who created some of the most loved characters ever?
In any case when he passes (which is probably impossible), his brain will be preserved Einstein style, and probably attached to a robot expressly built to upend teatables with great efficiency.
The future is very bright for Nintendo what with their crazy success and the expanding they're doing.
