It does make me wonder about a videogame industry without Miyamoto, tho. That will be a sad day : /
What he said in the interview is that he regularly tells his team that he will one day retire. It's inevitable, and he tells them this as a motivator - to encourage that they hone their skills and be ready for that day when it comes. Seems pretty sensible, but I can understand the misunderstanding in the interview.
Shigesato Itoi is NOT a game designer, he is just a copywriter. He almost never gets involved in any game and he is busy with many proyects from his own company that dedicates in everyday products.
He is a very good friend of Satoru Iwata, so maybe in the future we could get to see something new with one of his stories involved; whatever it is it WON'T be a new MOTHER game. He has made it clear plenty of times that MOTHER 4 is not something he wants to do.
All in favor?
but still we can expect here posts from retards claiming that Nintendo need to make more brown-ass shooters and action games with realistic graphics cause that's the sign of innovation. not to mention how they never made anything innovative. haters gonna hate.
I'm glad he's encouraging younger devs to step forward - I just hope he stands by what he says and doesn't just say "hey, that new idea would be great in a Mario or Zelda game - screw originality!". I also hope he does create new franchises himself, like he did with Pikmin.
Nintendo shares dropped 2% last night.
Shiggy must be cloned. For science. Love that man.
He has been a great game designer but his position in the company has given him control over some important parts of the video game systems themselves and I really blame for the lack of internet multi-player on the GC and Wii and that there wasn't any but he really did not help Nintendo when it come to going online.
I am still very upset that the guy who made the Game-boy left Nintendo and is dead (Gumpei Yokoi) because he was much better at making R&D for the next big pieces of hardware which is what Nintendo is really lacking right now.
Not that the jump from DS to 3DS is a big one, but it really is the same form factor and about the same experiences you could get out of your DS.
Same with the Wii not that it was a big jump to it, but it was almost the same experiences without motion controls as to the GameCube hardware wise.
Anyways I was excited to see something new out of the company, not that Miyamoto is not great but these last few years has been well...not so great on the wii.
Nobody is ever gonna match Myiamoto especially not if they will not get the freedom to create their own stories and their own characters. As anyone growing up with Nintendo i love the company but they need people to create their own path. I just feel that has been missing for a long time at Nintendo and if they don't give someone else a true chance to make their own history and to create their own adventures then all we will get are echos of the past.
This now sounds disappointing. The picture that was made yesterday was that of Nintendo capable of handling itself and Shigeru tailing off to work with a new small studio annexed to the same building to make new IPs.
